These procedures describe the events which might occur as part of the normal operation of the mission and common to all astronauts.

Shifts

Duration

Astronaut duty shifts are 30 minutes in length and are staggered so that they begin 5 minutes after the beginning of a 20 minute Mission Control Shift.

Scheduling

Scheduling Habitat Shifts is the pre-mission duty of the Mission Control Commander

Staffing

Shift-by-shift staffing is the responsibility of the FLIGHT director with the FAO and Habitat Commander.

Shift Change

  • Shift Changes should allow each astronaut to engage in a new activity to alleviate boredom.
  • Mission Control should request that a shift change be initiated
  • Shift Changes should be reported to Mission Control if they did not request that a shift change be initiated
  • Shift Changes should be logged in MC and in the Habitat
