This article is about Space Sim Lore. It contains anecdotes or Spacesim mythology.

McSquiggly is a phenomenon on the forums started by Bryce Storey. All instances of the word "and" on the OCESS forum were for a substantial period of time known to be replaced by the words "and McSquiggly and". This was done by using the censor filter, which takes any word and replaces it with, usually, hilarious alternatives. As far as anyone can tell, Cmdr. Storey did this initially to see how long it would take someone to post something on the forums asking about what was going on. The first person to do this was Ian Martin, and the time between McSquiggly's initiation and his posting about it is estimated to have been about 2 months. Other executives such as Ben Paul and Maclean Rouble knew about it at the time but refused to change it for their own entertainment.

Example

A phrase like this:

"We are currently working on doors and the sub."

Would turn into this:

"We are currently working on doors and McSquiggly and the sub."

The Death of McSquiggly

Possibly after complaints, Bryce censored McSquiggly to "I'm Hanging onto dying traditions." A thread of the forum was dedicated to the death of McSquiggly, and it was a rather sombre affair until Samuel Baltz discovered that MCSQUIGGLY in all caps was not censored.
