Alex Mersereau is a member of Spacesim and a former Education Commander who joined in 2010-11.

During his time in Spacesim, he left his mark on the club through several long-lasting contributions. He is credited with the discovery of the rogue planet Mersereau 2012 A.

Mission Participation

In his first year, Alex was a dedicated member of Mission Control for Mission Dragan 2011. Due to a tendency to mumble and a great will to speak, he was most frequently found writing logs of events, rather than confusing people through CAPCOM. Unfortunately, his participation was limited, as he was in Grade 9 at the time, and could not afford to stay overnight or miss classes.

In his second year, Alex participated as a less-dedicated Simulator on Mission Red Sun 2012. Although he attended his Simulator shifts, he was also involuntarily signed up for mission control shifts by Education Subcommander Zola Magwood, all of which were unfortunately placed at times during school hours. Due to a long-standing perfect attendance record, Alex was forced to miss every mission control shift he had been signed up for. This has given some members of spacesim a misguided impression of low-commitment on his part. (Note: He later lost his perfect attendance record due to a single late arrival to a 4th period class by about a single minute.)

In his third year, Alex took on the role of the Engineer aboard the Habitat as an Astronaut for Mission Pritchett 2013. Serving his team well, Alex held one of that Mission's high scores for number of EVAs participated on. He also probably generated the most sweat in that time. When the Habitat was contaminated (biologically speaking), he volunteered to stay behind and control EECOM to decontaminate the crew in a safe and controlled manner. Alex's other contributions to the mission included his engineering skills, his ability to not eat a whole lot, and his constant streams of absolutely flawless jokes.

In his fourth year, Alex participated as an Astronaut for a second time on Mission Magellan 2014. Things went pretty well, but he slept through Lt Nova Kelly's ankle spraining incident and Lt Spencer Whitehead's purple water incident due to his sleep shift occupying 4 AM to 12 PM. Most of those late nights were spent watching Breaking Bad on Commander Patrick Melanson's laptop.

Post-Graduation

After graduation, Alex remained a willing source of knowledge and enthusiastic participant on Mission Bifrost 2015, though his participation was limited due to not actually being a high school student at the time. Nevertheless, he attempted to contribute his skills as best as possible during his attendance.

Non-Mission Participation

During his time in Spacesim, Alex gained a detailed understanding of most systems (with the exception of Piloting, though he has a rudimentary understanding of the system and could provide educated guesses on how things work at least). He was among the first to master the coolant system on Engineering when it was introduced prior to the 2013 mission, thus earning him the position as Engineer aboard the Hab. He remains a reliable source of information for just about every system that was in operation during his time in the club. Except Laura, god damn.

Alex served as the Education Commander in his fourth year. Leading up to this, he designed a number of posters for club week. During the course of his time as Education Commander, Alex gained a reputation for dragging out Friday lunch meetings longer than usual. He served the club with near-constant enthusiasm and almost flawless attendance, aside from the UTSDC weekend. Contrary to his predecessor Education Commanders, Alex focused his efforts inwards, attempting to strengthen the club's sense of community and culture. He sought to educate current members and foster a sense of enjoyment within the club. In his eyes, while his co-commander was focused on the functional operations of Spacesim, it was his own goal to keep its members entertained and excited about club activities.

Alex organized and operated the majority of the events of the 2014 Revenge Mission, which was a tremendous success.

Current Goals

As a former Education Commander, Alex currently hopes to continue his efforts to maintain the health of Spacesim's culture through emphasis on both official and unofficial logs taken during the mission.
