RD1 (full name OCESS Special Research and Development Area 1), colloquially known as "the cave" is an area of W027 constructed behind the surface walls, and used primarily for software development and hardware testing. It contains a makeshift desk consisting of two speaker housings and a stool, a chair, a printer, and networking equipment, as well as two computers in addition to any member laptops. The area's main computer, Cave Johnson, is a desktop PC used for experimental software testing and software development, and is currently running a beta version of OPOS2. The other system, Voyager, is a laptop running OPOS1, and is connected to the OCESS network for use with picoNET, OrbitV, and other networked systems. The area was built by Ethan Boicey as an alternative to the Simloft, and is set up as an office for worksessions rather than a control room for missions. It is the spiritual successor to the short-lived "Keplernoffice".
