2.1 Habitat Commander Procedures
2.1.1 Job Description
The Habitat Commander is the primary command officer aboard the Habitat. The Habitat Commander is tasked with the successful execution of the Mission Objectives and the safety of the Habitat's crew. It is also the Habitat Commander's duty to select the crew for the Mission in consultation with the Mission Control Commander and the Admiral.
2.1.2 Fitness for duty
The Habitat Commander must have Instructor rating for Habitat COMMAND.
The Habitat Commander must have Complete rating or higher on all of Habitat AUXCOM, CAPCOM, EECOM, ENG, and LOGS.
The Habitat Commander must have In Progress rating or higher on Habitat PILOT.
The Habitat Commander is recommended to achieve at least In Progress rating on Habitat MEDICAL, but this is not a requirement.
The Habitat Commander is usually also the Mission Commander, but this is not a requirement.
2.1.3 Crew Selection
The Habitat Commander for a given mission will be chosen by the Mission Commander in consultation with the Admiral.
The Habitat Commander will then create an Astronaut Application Form to be used in the selection of the other crew members. It is recommended that this form include at least:
- The primary and secondary positions for which the applicant is applying
- One scenario-based question (eg. What would you do if your commander was trapped in a decompressing module?)
- One knowledge-based question (eg. What are the normal weather conditions at the Mission Destination?)
- One psychological question (eg. How would you survive solitary confinement?)
- One drawing of a fish (This is traditional)
The Habitat Commander is responsible for the distribution of the Astronaut Application form to all interested members of the club. At least two physical copies should be available in the Sim Office, two further physical copies should be made available at each worksession. The application should be available in an open document format on the Website. This form should be made available in November of the calendar year before the Mission.
The Habitat Commander is responsible for the collection of all Astronaut Applications by the end of December of the calendar year before the Mission. The Habitat Commander is then charged with the selection of the Habitat's crew in consultation with the Mission Control Commander (who is chosen by the Mission Commander in consultation with the Admiral) and the Admiral. The crew should be selected by the end of January of the year of the mission, and should follow the crew completeness procedures.
