I've missed tons of Mission-Specific ranks. If you can think of any, please help out. Thanks - Darth Wombat 21:01, 9 February 2010 (EST)
- Ill try. Also I don't believe CAPCOM is a position in the hierarchy as it is usually done by all people in MC and not a designated person. IronyFail in ANAGLYPH 3D! 21:10, 9 February 2010 (EST)
- Really? During training missions there was always a designated CAPCOM, and CAPCOM is supposed to be the second in command - Darth Wombat 22:16, 9 February 2010 (EST)
- that is to say, in the MC hierarchy. I guess we had a Mission Specialist doubling as CAPCOM. - Darth Wombat 22:17, 9 February 2010 (EST)
- Last year everyone took turns on CAPCOM, so Im not that sure. Also having CAPCOM as any advanced position doesn't make sense as they just pass messages through and don't have to think. IronyFail in ANAGLYPH 3D! 14:40, 10 February 2010 (EST)
- That's quite a misconception, as CAPCOM really does have to think. They have to take what the Flight Director says, read what the Flight Director actually means, paraphrase that into something appropriate for the radio, and transmit it. They need to take word-perfect dictation coming from the HAB, as one word could mean the difference between life and death for the astronauts. Finally, CAPCOM has to be aware of the mood on both ends of the communications, and endeavour to keep the lines of communication well oiled and always open. CAPCOM is not an easy job. It doesn't have a position in the hierarchy, though. Technically, the only MC position with any real rank to it is the Flight Director. Everyone defers to the Flight Director (except for the Admiral). Stefanido 15:40, 10 February 2010 (EST)
- Thanks for the input and clarification. I think I might add some of what you said to the CAPCOM page. IronyFail in ANAGLYPH 3D! 19:16, 10 February 2010 (EST)
- Stefan: what about MC Mission Commander? - Darth Wombat 19:43, 10 February 2010 (EST)
- As I think I said on the MC Mission Commander talk page, in the past, there were two Mission Commanders and no Subcommander. One Mission Commander would take MC and the other, the Hab (not always). I suppose that you could call MC Commander and Hab Commander Mission-Specific ranks, whereas Mission Commander is a non-Mission-Specific rank. Stefanido 11:55, 12 February 2010 (EST)
