Nevin Hotson has been a member of the OCESS since September 2005. He has participated in the Mission for each of his three years in the Simulation, acting as an Able Crewman on Prometheus, Chief Engineer on Coronis, and Habitat Commander on Red Dawn.

In the OCESS
2005-06
In 2005-06, Nevin worked on such projects as the Habitat doors and the plumbing system. He participated in that year's EEP, the last one done in the past six years, and in two planetarium presentations. On Mission Prometheus, he held the fairly nondescript job of Able Crewman.

2006-07
Nevin began 2006-07 by taking on the role of Webmaster. Most of his time at work sessions continued to be spent working on the doors, which gradually morphed into the bane of his existence by defying all attempts to make them work.

During Mission Coronis, he was notable chiefly for his work in the position of Chef Engineer and for his involvement in Bunkbedgate. His participation in a planned Extended EVA was cancelled due to Alpha weather conditions.

2007-08
In 2007-08, Nevin was selected as Mission Commander for his final year in the OCESS. Initiatives undertaken during his tenure included the construction of the Engine Closet, the development and partial implementation of the NOVEL system, and the final development of a door system that actually works.

As Habitat Commander during Mission Red Dawn, Nevin led the mission to a generally successful and only slightly tardy conclusion while managing to transmit a cold to most of his crew.

Outside the OCESS
Nevin was on Lisgar's Reach for the Top team since Grade 9, and was the captain and top scorer in 2007-08.

After his high school career, Nevin continued his studies at the Royal Military College in Kingston, obtaining a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering in 2012. He is currently training as a maintenance engineer on the CH-124 Sea King, an aircraft that is about as reliable as the Hawking II was.

Contributions after graduation
During Daedalus, Nevin returned to Spacesim having obtained leave from RMC for reading week. During that time, he was instrumental in helping Stefan De Young wire up a buzzer system for concurrent use with the improved multi-phone CAPCOM developed by Chris Hawthorne, Matt Farkas-Dyck, and Stefan De Young. Unfortunately, the buzzer system was incomplete prior to Daedalus.

EVA suits are items of clothing worn by astronauts in hazardous environments, most notably the hard vacuum of outer space. There are many different varieties of EVA suits, and Spacesim possesses two different types of suit: full-body suits (similar to the Advanced Crew Escape Suit) and skin-tight space activity suits.

Full-body suits
Spacesim originally conducted missions with only three of these suits, leaving those astronauts without suits to cower in safe modules during emergencies. These suits have several layers of fabric, which insulate and protect the astronaut, and Velcro cuffs that help keep air in. Each suit is associated with a plastic bubble helmet.

Space Activity Suits
In response to criticisms that the older suits were too restrictive and generally showing their age, Spacesim developed four space activity suits. These suits consist of a central 'corset' and elasticized fabric for the limbs, which apply mechanical pressure to the skin to prevent bruising in a vacuum. They are designed to be worn under a flight suit. These suits offer less protection against other hazards, but are much easier to wear and work in. The helmets for these suits are also better-equipped than the old ones, and include a fan to prevent fogging; this fan is much appreciated by the astronauts, for fogging often rendered the old helmets unusable after as few as ten minutes.

Current practice is to restrict these suits to use inside the Habitat except in emergency circumstances.
TheKillerRabbithttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Flight_SuitFlight Suit2008-03-09T20:39:24Z
TheKillerRabbit: Flight Suit moved to Flight suit: capitalization

Bunkbedgate is a term referring to the collapse of two bunk beds during Mission Coronis and to the ensuing scandal surrounding their construction and the activities of their occupants. Key players included Kevan Adlard, Alex Foo, Stefan De Young, and Nevin Hotson

Lead-up
During the months prior to Coronis, Kevan and Alex had been the members in charge of the construction of a set of six bunk beds to hold the astronauts in the Longhouse during the Mission. The beds consisted of three sets of paired beds stacked two to a unit, and were constructed of wood.

The collapse
On the first night of the mission, Stefan entered his bunk, the top bunk of the third unit, via the Kevan-built stepladder constructed for that purpose, only to have the deck of his bed snap off the rails and fall onto the thankfully unoccupied bunk below, assigned to Nevin. Stefan was luckily uninjured in the collapse, but his bunk was unusable and the other top bunks were ruled unsafe pending investigation, and the crew members on top bunks slept in the Interlock. The wreckage of Stefan's bunk was jettisoned via the airlock.

The following day, during efforts to continue removing what was left of the top bunk, the lower bunk (which Stefan and Nevin were standing on) also collapsed.

Incriminations
The Habitat crew immediately blamed Kevan for the collapse, since he had been responsible for the design. Investigation revealed that the screws which fastened the wood that supported the slats to the rail had been placed too close to the edge of the rail. It was thus inevitable that the screws would rip through if the bed was subjected to load. There was no other fastening supporting the slats.

Kevan immediately claimed that Alex had been responsible for the actual construction of the third set of bunks, and had used scrap wood in its construction. He further charged that the second bunk had collapsed because Stefan and Nevin had been jumping on it, despite a lack of corroborating evidence.

Results
Kevan and Alex rebuilt the bed during the mission. Despite this, Nevin elected not to sleep under it for the remainder of the mission. Reinforcing wood was added to prevent another collapse. The units that didn't collapse were inspected and judged fit for further use.
In 2007-08, the destroyed bottom bunk was replaced. No collapses took place during the following Mission Red Dawn.
TheKillerRabbithttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Nevin_HotsonNevin Hotson2008-03-08T20:44:31Z
TheKillerRabbit: Created as standalone page.

The 2008 Mission to Mars, or Mission Red Dawn, was the first mission run using the Engine Closet and the new, smaller Hotlab. Other new things used on this mission included:
* A new version of the Orbit software implementing solid rocket boosters (for terrestrial liftoff) and a reusable parachute (for atmospheric reentry).
* A new, more comfortable EVA suit.

Experiments
Experiments were performed on the following subjects:
* how does tiredness affect mental ability?
* how do different genres of music affect mental ability and heart rate?
* how do distracting stimuli affect mental ability?
* how have thirty years on the Martian surface affected the Viking I lander?
Additionally, due to an emergeny situation inspired by the loss of 30% of the Habitat's wash-water stores, an attempt was made to build a Sabatier reactor to produce additional water from the Martian atmosphere. This experiment was a partial success, as water was produced, but could not be retrieved due to extreme Martian weather.

Data from these experiments is still being processed, and will be released once conclusions have been drawn.

Notable Events
* CJOH showed up without RSVPing several hours before launch, and some of the preparations were featured in a news segment on 26 February.
* Launch was only two hours behind schedule, which is believed to be a record for recent OCESS missions
* All power to the main engines was briefly lost during the initial insertion to Earth orbit; however, the auxiliary power bus functioned properly, and a safe orbit was achieved.
* A total of five scheduled EVAs were performed, as well as several additional EVAs to repair damage and set up the Sabatier reactor.
* A powerful storm on the last night briefly incapacitated Cdr Hotson and Lt Rouble while they were on EVA to collect the water produced by the Sabatier reactor; however, Lt Cdr Xing was able to retrieve them safely.
* Landing at the OCESS facilities in Ottawa was at approximately 1415 EST; initial reentry was over Chicago, which was judged not to be an optimal landing site.

Every year, Spacesim conducts two missions: a mini, or Training Mission usually lasting about 4 to 6 hours, and a 96 hour "Main Mission" to an astral body in the solar system. Candidates for mission destinations have been planets, moons, and even asteroids as the OCESS astronauts search for their own educational experience in the depths of "space" by conducting experiments, simulated extra-terrestrial/space walks, piloting space vehicles and dealing with various simulated scenarios and problems that may play out over the course of a real space mission such as meteor strikes, ion storms and engine failures.

During the mission, the astronauts remain inside the Habitat, their only contact with the outside world being through a telephone, radios, webcams, and computers much like a real space mission. It is inside the Hab that they must eat, drink, sleep, play and carry out all life functions. These astronauts usually miss several days of school to wear flight suits and helmets while the rest of the school wishes they were missing school with them.

See Spacesim Groups for more information.

Mission History
The first mission in Ottawa took place in 1991-92. From then until the 2002-03 Mission, missions were 72-hours in duration. In fact, the 2001-02 mission was originally scheduled to be the first 96-hour mission, but was delayed 24 hours by the OCDSB.

Historically, missions ran from a Thursday to a Sunday, although recent times has seen them move to occupy more of the school week. The mission date was set for February by the International Student Space Simulation so that all missions would occur simultaneously. This practice continued until around 1995-96, at which point, mission date coordination only took place between Ottawa and our sister-mission in Lexington, South Carolina. The South Carolina exchanges ended in the late 90's, but the 2001-02 mission did involve an exchange with a school from Florida.

Mission Control is the "Earth-based" branch of the OCESS. In scope of the mission, it acts as the home base, and HQ of the OCESS. Located at 440 Albert Street in Ottawa, it houses the many members of the Mission Control Staff as they help the Astronauts confront the difficulties of space flight and exploration.

Description
The oldest known description of Mission Control reads as follows:

Mission Control is the brains of the mission. From this room in the Ottawa-Carleton Educational Media Centre, the entire operation is co-ordinated and administered.

Computers and various electronic devices are strewn about the room in a seemingly random fashion. However, there is a method to this madness. Each one has a specific task, running the many programs which are needed to keep the mission operating at peak efficiency. An ancient TV monitor displays the countdown, reading its data off a tape recorder. The newest video-conferencing technology permits the Mission Controllers to communicate with their peers at Lisgar Collegiate Institute.

Members of the simulation take turns at various workstations. The Flight Director assists the Mission Commander. One member is delegated to deal with visitors, to answer the phone and to keep a log of the activities during the mission. The astronauts doing science experiments are supported by yet another member while one person is communicating with the hab on headsets and another is on computer communication. Each station on Mission Control is crucial to the smooth operation of the mission. Every task, no matter how small, is vital.

In the context of the OCESS's annual Mission, the astronauts are the members who enter the Habitat for the purposes of simulating space flight and exploration.

The astronaut positions are coveted amongst members of the OCESS as only a few positions are available, and those who go will always remember the experience. That however is only half the story (or a third if you ignore mission integrity) as two other groups of students exist within the OCESS (these being the Mission Control Staff, and the Simulator) providing an enjoyable experience for all.

The purpose of astronauts is to collect the data from the experiments, simulate living in space, and react to Mission Control's decisions. They are isolated from the outside world for the duration of the mission, during which time they experience the trials and tribulations of space exploration.

EECOM is a station in both the Habitat and Mission Control. The purpose of EECOM is to monitor the environmental data for the habitat, and to perform such operations as venting or pressurizing modules, scrubbing carbon dioxide, or adding oxygen. The Mission Control EECOM station is the only one capable of opening doors.

Historically, EECOM stood for Electrical, Environmental, and Communications systems, though the communications part of the job was moved to a station called INCO during the Apollo program. EECOM monitored electrical systems including the fuel cells and cabin pressure control systems from the Mission Control.
Spacesim Adaptations
Spacesim has a station called EECOM both aboard the Habitat and in Mission Control who is in charge of monitoring changes in cabin pressure, and regulating the atmosphere on board the Habitat to conform to nominal parameters. A separate station for monitoring all electrical systems called Engineering was developed in 2006-07, and allows control over the Habitat Reactors and the Power Grid.

The EECOM station also contains the warning lights for imminent space-junk collision, known as the "asteroid watch."
James Cooper was the habitat EECOM for the 2007-08 Mission to Borrelly. Unfortunately, the crew of that mission had several close encounters with abnormal pressures due to Mr. Cooper being colour-blind, and therefore unable to distinguish between the green "safe" and yellow "warning" lables the software placed on the monitor. Software rewrites are being planned to avoid further disaster.

TheKillerRabbithttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/EVA_SuitEVA Suit2007-07-01T01:39:02Z
TheKillerRabbit: Created (more to follow)

Purpose
Task Force Leaders are the task force members that are in charge of leading a task force. They are usualy the people that create a task force and create the proposal to the Task Force Coordinator. Thus, they are the expert on their respective task force and are responsible for making sure everything goes according to plan. Since they are the experts on their task force, they are responsible for instructing the Task Force members as to how to complete the task.

Responsibilities
As creator of a task force, the task force leader is responsible for filing a formal task force proposal to the TFC outlining the specifics of his particular Task forces. It is only after this proposal is accepted that he officialy becomes a task force leader. Once he is the leader of a task force, he is responsible for managing the task force and completing the task. Every work session, the task force leader must file a status report to the TFC to update him on the progress of his task force.
2007-2008 is the upcoming school year. Although many of the details of Spacesim's operation for the next year have not yet been sorted out, significant progress was made at the planning meeting held on June 29th, 2007.
TheKillerRabbithttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Energy_GenerationEnergy Generation2007-06-30T17:32:48Z
TheKillerRabbit: Changed to use two reactors

NotCanon
expandarticle
The Habitat generates its electrical power via three main sources: its fusion reactors, its fuel cell, and storage batteries

The Habitat Reactors
The Habitat's main source of power is its pair of fusion reactors. The tokamak-style reactors use the deuterium-tritium reaction to generate power; at their nominal operating load, they can generate 3.5 GW, although they can provide 4.5 GW indefinitely without overheating and upwards of 5 GW for short bursts. The reactors are supplied with fuel from the main fuel tanks, which contain 78 t of lithium and 22 t of deuterium.

The Habitat Fuel Cells
The Habitat's secondary power source consists of an array of fuel cells which supply power for the Habitat's Internal Systems and Communications Systems off of the 120 V secondary bus. The fuel cell consumes 190 kg of hydrogen and 1710 kg of oxygen per hour to generate 52 kW for this bus; the fuel consumption doubles when the fuel cell is used to start the Habitat reactors, at which point it must produce 100 kW. This greater load results in the fuel cell overheating after a minute or so, and so cooling breaks must be worked into the ignition timeline.

Storage Batteries
Backup power for the secondary and tertiary buses is provided by two 10,000 Amp-hour batteries which recharge from the buses when not in use.

This page contains the notes that were taken at the meeting on July 29th, 2007 to plan Spacesim's course for the next year. Discussion about their contents should take place on the talk page.

Events for Next Year
Discussion of next year's events centred both on developing new events and improving existing ones

Spacesim Camping Trip
The first major suggestion was that Spacesim go on a 2-night camping trip over the first or second weekend of October 2007 (5th-7th or 12th-14th). This event would have several benefits, including
* possibly attracting new members
* serving as an opportunity for star-gazing, since Gatineau or Algonquin are free of light pollution
* building camaraderie and a sense of esprit de corps among those who attend
* serving as preparation for the mission, in that all supplies must be planned and brought in ahead of time, since resupply is difficult
Several observations were made about this possible event:
* It is unlikely that Spacesim members possess enough camping equipment to run this event. This means that three options are apparent:
*# Spacesim buys camping equipment
*#* This could be a significant expenditure, depending on how much must be purchased
*#* It would leave us well-prepared to run such an event in future
*# Spacesim members buy camping equipment
*#* This relieves some of the strain upon our budget, but might be asking too much of the families of members
*# Spacesim borrows camping equipment from the Outdoor Ed. stockpile
*#* While this option is much cheaper than the other two, it relies upon us obtaining permission from the school to use its equipment
*#* This also imposes scheduling constraints, since we would have to work around Outdoor Ed's use of the same equipment
*#* Damaging or losing the equipment would result in us having to make good the damage/lost, possibly at significant expense
* Other points raised were:
** We would probably need additional supervision, since asking Dr. Magwood to supervise many members on an overnight trip would be asking a lot. These additional supervisors might be:
*** Willing teachers
*** Benevolent parents of members/alumni
** If we do decide to go ahead with this event, the school would need to be informed as soon as possible

Week of Hype
* will be taking place Mon-Wed before Clubs Day
* overall goal: needs to have higher profile than last time
* 1 'theme' each day:
** Explosions Day (NI3, thermite, liquid nitrogen bottles)
** Rocketry Day (Bottle rockets, model rocket engines attached to goalposts)
** Marshmallow Day (LN marshmallows, other LN activities)

Clubs Day
Clubs Day will be the Thursday after the events of the Week of Hype. Spacesim will have a time slot in the assembly to be held on that day. The consensus of those at the meeting was that we should have a slideshow instead of a skit, since none of us is particularly good at acting or writing skits.
It was also suggested that the hovercraft be repaired in time for use at Clubs Day. The significant issue with this proposal is that space is lacking inside the gym, and the new brickwork in the Mall is not compatible with the hovercraft.

Organization
Many ideas were suggested in the area of Spacesim's organization and operation for next year

Lunch Meetings
Lunch meetings will be moved to the middle of the week (probably to Wednesday, barring major conflict with another club). This will allow enough time between the meeting and the work session for plans to be made and supplies to be purchased, so that work can commence immediately upon arrival at 440 Albert Street.
Commanders' meetings will be held after school the day before the meeting (probably Tuesday), to set the agenda and allow time to make any necessary preparations.

The Sim Office
The consensus reached at the meeting was that no ironclad rules will be imposed on the use of the Sim Office beyond those necessary to ensure safety and those required by common sense. Steps will be taken against activities if they are found to interfere with the use of the office for business. Also, no games will be permitted during lunch on the day of the lunchtime meeting, since such activities will:
* provide an incentive to not attend the meeting
* provide an incentive to rush the meeting to its conclusion so that the games may be played

Labour Relations
Building on the attempted implementation of a structured system for Task Forces, Spacesim will endeavour to implement a semi-permanent system of 'Departments'. Due to the observation that almost all projects undertaken by Spacesim fall into just a few general categories, most work performed at work sessions will be assigned to standing departments like the Department of Construction, the Department of Electronics, the Department of Documentation, etc. When a new project (e.g. replacing the most heavily damaged portions of the Habitat's walls) is proposed, it will be submitted as a formal proposal (description of task, materials required, labour required, required date of completion, estimated cost and time to completion). If the project is approved, the relevant department (in this case, the Department of Construction) will have the task added to its worklist. At each work session, the Departments will be able to consult a list of tasks which they should be working on, and will easily be able to determine which tasks should be worked on first, instead of having to search around for tasks that need to be worked on. This system will also ensure that there are people available to work on essential tasks, which might otherwise wither because all the available people are already working on other tasks.
Spacesim must also ensure that we do not work on too many tasks at the same time, which would probably result in none of the tasks being completed.

The Beginning of the Year
At the start of the 2007-08 school year, Spacesim will need to accomplish several tasks to lay the groundwork for the rest of the year. Before we begin casting around for new members, our current members should get together to assemble a list of tasks for the year and settle upon job assignments. Before we begin regular work sessions at Albert Street, we will need to clean up the debris left over from 2006-07, to prevent new members from perceiving us as unkempt, slovenly laggards (author's phrase). Our first work session should be an orientation for new members, to explain what Spacesim does and to allow them to see our facilities. The next work session should be a scripted 'demo' mission, to demonstrate how missions work and to show off our software (naturally, we will need to make sure that everything is operational before we do this, which will probably mean coming in beforehand).

EEP/Planetarium Publicity
We will have a concentration of publicity efforts for EEPs and Planetariums for the first two months of the school year. If no interest in EEPs is apparent during that period, we will de-emphasize EEPs and concentrate upon planetariums, since there is likely to be significant interest in these (as always). If interest in EEPs is shown, we will commence a regimen of EEP training so that we will be adequately prepared for the EEP.

EEPs
The general consensus of the meeting was that we need to be genuinely committed to the EEP program, and that we need to ensure that there is a potential market for EEPs before we devote significant effort to preparing for them. It was suggested that we look at a closer association with the Museum of Science and Technology and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and that we shift the focus of the EEP program to be centred more on general sciences, since astronomy does not play a significant role in the elementary curriculum.
Guangye suggested that we look into receiving a grant from the Canadian Space Agency to further develop our program. She also mentioned that the CSA has a distance education program which involves videoconferencing; we intend to look further into this program for next year. It was further emphasized that EEPs need to be treated with the same level of importance as planetariums, and that we need to ensure that we maintain contact with the RASC

Training
One of the major conclusions of the discussion was that Spacesim needs to ensure that all of its members are well-trained in most areas of the club's operation.

EEP/Planetarium Training
We concluded that most of the demand for planetariums should be anticipated in December/January and June, since most science classes place the astronomy stream at the end of the semester. This gives us at least three months to train for planetariums, during which time we should ensure that we have a dedicated cadre of members who are capable of running planetariums fairly frequently if demand requires it.
EEP training will only be necessary if demand is apparent. If there is indication that we will be presenting EEPs, training will take place at dedicated work sessions. Attention should be directed toward reducing the number of members required to conduct an EEP, which is currently very high.

Mission Training
The decision of the group was that next year's mission must be preceded by significantly more training than accompanied Coronis. This training would include 'cross-class' training (astronauts receiving Mission Control training and vice versa, pilots receiving engineer training and vice versa, etc.). In addition to individual, off-hours practice with the software, this training would also encompass several mini-missions to be run during the first semester, as well as work sessions devoted entirely to training. Anthony suggested a return to the practice of logging pilot training, the expectation being that pilots will be required to have a certain amount of practice before flying.

Procedures Training
It was generally agreed that the procedures, while sound at heart, are in significant need of updating to reflect modern improvements in Spacesim's infrastructure. Once this task has been completed, all members will be expected to be familiar with the manual in general and with the section which pertains to their portion of the mission in particular.

The Mission
The major points raised with regard to the mission were that Mission Control needs to be more involved in the mission and that more professionalism is necessary to maintain the necessary atmosphere of seriousness. More planning will also be needed to ensure that improvisation is kept to a minimum

The Hotlab
Efforts must be made next year to declutter the Hotlab so that only necessary equipment and substances are taken on the mission. Bringing unnecessary compounds is an accident waiting to happen.

Miscellaneous
The Galileo Challenge
Because some of the responsibility for this initiative is passing on to U of T, we will be less responsible for such aspects as publicising and distributing the contest. However, we will need to make sure that we hold up our end of the bargain for areas like writing the questions and sending them to U of T, as well as any other areas in which we can help.

Expansion
Pursuant to expanding into other schools, we should endeavour to print out a large quantity of posters which can be delivered to schools where expansion might be well-received. The possible formation of a Reach for the Top tournament league next year might allow for an avenue for picking up members from other schools. Tighter cooperation with Ottawa and Carleton Universities was also suggested.
TheKillerRabbithttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Mini-missionsMini-missions2007-06-30T01:38:45Z
TheKillerRabbit: Created as redirect to Mission Alpha

Ottawa Tech is short for Ottawa Technical High School and is the current location of Space Simulation. Located at 440 Albert Street, the facility served as a high school offering vocational and trade related courses throughout the 50s and 60s. It was finally closed in 1992 due to declining enrollment and the decreasing demand for tradesmen. The school is still maintained by the school board and is used partly as a daycare, storage facility, and most importantly, a residence for the OCESS. Despite the property being valued at $10 million, the school board plans to hold onto the building, hoping to re-open the high school at a later time. Thus, the future of Spacesim's home is secure for the moment.

OCESS moved into Ottawa Tech in 19--, was forced to leave in 19-- due to ----- reasons, and was alowed back in 20-- after the closing of their Media Center facilities.

Ottawa Tech graciously allows the OCESS to make use of their auto garage, which has been transformed into our location. Ottawa Tech is where OCESS houses its Mission Control, habitat, planetary surface and Simulators stations; as well as being the location for EEPs.
