Daedalus could also refer to the first Mission Daedalus, or Mission Alpha (2006).

The 2010 Mission to Io, Ganymede and Europa, or Mission Daedalus, was the first mission in the Hawking III, with the exception of the brief Genesis. The name was voted on by an assembly of members during a meeting; it was proposed by Chen-tao LaRochelle.
Mission Purpose
On Io, the astronauts were to collect samples of volcanic dust ejected by tectonic activity on the moon's surface for analysis. They were to land on Ganymede to set up Terraforming equipment, and on Europa to deploy an unmanned submersible in Europa's liquid water ocean to explore it and its rocky planetary core. One of the mission's driving thesis was of there having life on Europa.

A Quickie Run is when Spacesim members at 440 Albert put on flight suits and run across Albert Street to the Quickie convenience store, narrowly dodging buses and disturbed motorists. An OC Transpo bus station in front of the Quickie is usually home to some migrating citizens who find Spacesim members weird. At the Quickie dinner, snacks, and drinks are bought and then consumed at 440. Lately, Spacesim members have been buying large tubs of ice cream to eat, with an "ice-cream pool" taking over or augmenting the "pizza pool" and "pop pool".

Famous Purchases
Famously, Stefan De Young would purchase a combo deal of two two-litre bottles of RC Cola and chug all four litres within the confines of one worksession. This combo deal is the origin of the pop-pool phenomenon, as well as a wealth of other members who consume copious levels of soda every week. This practice was begun again by Max Jeffcott upon discovering a 2/$2 deal for RC Cola.

More recently, Peter Macdonald almost choked when chugging gingerale and root beer.

Another purchase that has long been popular in Spacesim is a packaged instant soup called Kimchi. It is best to purchase this at the same time as Bryce Storey because he will give you his Kimchi powder package for free.

Plans to Storm the Quickie
There is a copy of carefully drawn tactical plan, involving combined arms raid on the Quickie, utilizing various weapons and gadgets. This plan can be found in the Sim Office, and it demonstrates the tremendous strategic value of the Quickie to OCESS.
Sign Language is a method of communication that uses hand positions and gestures in order to convey meaning. As it is a visual method of communication, it is used in tandem with the video system for Spacesim's purposes in the event of audio or textual failure.

Sign Language was first proposed in Spacesim's modern era by Charlotte Bonyun, who developed a specific Spacesim lexicon that currently resides on a sheet of paper in the Control Room.

Spacesim Standard Sign Language has been formally adopted as part of AUXCOM since 2009-10.

The medical officer, or medic, is the member of the astronaut crew who is responsible for the safety and well being of themselves and the rest of the crew. They are in charge of the first aid kit. This rank is assigned to the astronaut with the most medical expertise, usually First Aid Certification. The medic position, like Engineer and Com Officer, is not always officially given.

Rank
While the role of medic is not formally associated with a high rank, the medic does have the power to overrule a commander if she/he believes them to be compromised. The may also give orders to other astronauts if they believe it medically necessary. For example, if an astronaut is obviously suffering from fatigue and it is affecting their performance, the medic may order them to get some rest.

First Aid Kit
The first aid kit has been nicknamed "Daisy" after Daisy Wong, the first official Medical Officer.

The Hotlab is the smallest module of the Habitat where all chemical testing on samples are conducted. A special module is devoted to this purpose so that any chemical or biological contamination due to samples collected on the Planetary Surface will be isolated and prevented from spreading into the rest of the Habitat. The Hotlab is open to the outside via the Hotbox, which is a small airlock used as a entrance and temporary storage site for the samples collected. Once basic safety assessments are carried out on the sample, it is brought into the Hotlab. The current Hotlab is located adjacent to the Interlock; however, there is evidence of the current bathroom having been intended to carry out duties of a Hotlab.

Relocation of Hotlab
In 2007-08, the Hotlab was relocated slightly to enlarge the planetary surface.

Hawking III
The Hotlab's equipment was entirely replaced for the Hawking III's maiden voyage, Genesis 2009. During the move to the new room, the Hotbox was damaged and sufficient revenue existed to completely replace it and provide updated equipment to the astronauts. Three storage compartments were added before the 2009-10 Mission for in-mission experiments.
The Simulator Staircase is the staircase up to street level located at the west side of Spacesim's previous 440 Albert Street facilities. Its name comes from its use by Simulators to enter their work area without being seen by Mission Control staff during the Mission. The space underneath was used as the Junkyard due to its low height rendering it useless for active purposes. It was also referred to as the Graveyard because of the large number of non-functional monitors stored there.

The term "Simulator Staircase", in the context of the New Facilities, describes the staircase leading to the Simulator Balcony.
Rubberchickenbenhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Talk:AstrometricsTalk:Astrometrics2011-01-14T21:58:45Z
Rubberchickenben:

Spacesim has many computers, and to distinguish them when networking they are given names taken from mythology, science-fiction, history, and other disciplines. The current tradition when naming computers is to let the person who contributed the box decide the name. Thus, there is a wide variety in the origins of computer names.
Spacesim Mafia is a game that started being played on the Forum in the summer of 2010. It is modeled after the popular game Mafia, played both in real life and on forums, wherein a referee chooses players to secretly be killers and they oust various players, while all the while the group at large is trying to guess who the killers are. Its pertinence to Spacesim is that it trains members in keeping secrets from one another. The killers must maintain the facade of being innocent Spacesim members for however long the game lasts, not only on the forums but every time the game crops up in real conversation as well. In 2010-11, the first year in several when simulators are to be kept secret after several years of their identities being public, this is especially useful training.
Rubberchickenbenhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/2010-112010-112010-11-19T04:21:38Z
Rubberchickenben: added automated mission task force

Firsts
* The first year of the new hierarchy proposed in the 2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy.
* Training is planned to be revamped, with proper Task Force leaders constantly in charge of training members in various stations.
* EEPs are planned to be brought back for the first time since 2005-06.
* Training Missions are planned to be revamped; instead of semi-regular training missions, workshops will be held as they were a decade ago and longer. Members will sign up or be selected for a work session-long workshop on certain tasks necessary for Spacesim.
* The first Automated Mission is planned for this year.
* The first educational seminars were held in recent history.
* The first mission to a location outside our solar system.

Lore

The Lunch Meeting-Specific Hierarchy is a third hierarchy jokingly created in 2010-11, mocking the complexity of the Administration and the Mission-Specific Hierarchy. This hierarchy only comes into effect on the first lunch meeting of every month, but only if there is a full moon that night and a reference has been made to Trogdor in the Spacesim Office in the last 3 days. No members of the hierarchy have any function, power, or responsibility within the organization. Lunch meeting hierarchy simulators are so secret that they probably do not even exist. These crafty individuals create disasters during lunch meetings, causing some members to postulate that every single member of Spacesim is a lunch meeting simulator.

Members
Usually only grade twelves and alumni achieve Lunch Meeting-Specific Hierarchy status. Unlike the other two hierarchies, members on the lunch meeting specific hierarchy never rotate out; they can only leave the hierarchy if they opt out or are specifically removed by a commander. The illustrious members and their respective positions are:
*Sega Genesis Commander: Matthew Pelletier
*Major: Bryn Beynon and Austin Ramclam
*Minuteman: Alex Mendes

Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego? is an educational game made by Broderbrund Software in 1993, in which the player must chase Carmen Sandiego and her alien henchmen throughout the planets and moons of the Milky Way. It runs on DOS. An empty box that presumably once held the deluxe version of the game now sits in the Sim Office.
History
This game was one of the station activities for small children during EEPs and Summer Camp for at least some of the time during which these programs existed. Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego? was also a station for mini-missions during the 90s. On Sept. 22, 2008, Ian Martin donated a copy to Spacesim. It is NOT an exception to the Sim Office rule of "No video games without Commander permission".

Time Acceleration is the act of speeding up time. In the context of spacesim, it refers to a function built into the Orbit software which allows the pilot to speed up time. As outer space is generally a large empty space, time acceleration allows the pilot to ignore the time spent waiting to reach a destination. Time acceleration, although a large break in Mission Integrity, is necessary to complete a Mission in a suitable length of time.

The Mission Control Commander, not to be confused with the Mission Commander, is the absolute authority within Mission Control hierarchy. Before Stefan's Proposal to Change the Hierarchy the holder of this position was a Mission Commander within the non-mission specific hierarchy of Spacesim, but this has become a Mission-Specific rank only. The student with this rank usually doubles as a Flight Director, but has power over the other Flight Directors and is able to at any time override their orders (Flight Directors of course have staggered shifts, but the MC Mission Commander is the only Flight Director who holds absolute power even during another Flight Director's shift). As well, this student has the responsibility to hound Spacesim members who will be serving in Mission Control for their mission permission forms, and to then assign them timeslots during the mission.
Ben Paul is a Vice-Admiral who was a Spacesim member from grades nine to twelve. He participated in four main missions, numerous training missions, and three University of Toronto Space Design Contest teams. However, his main legacy is his tireless work for the Wiki and archives.

Grade 9 (2006-07)
Ben joined Spacesim in Grade 9 after his friend Matthew Farkas-Dyck did. He was quickly approached by Jeff Gao to become the new quartermaster, and worked on the storage modules until other grade nines such as Matt and Bryce Storey held the position. He was given EEP training for "The Pit Demo" but unfortunately, no EEPs occurred that year. During the Mission Alpha for the main mission he acted as a simulator, one of several members simulating hail through the use of popcorn. As part of the general labour (cleaning, maintenance, and odd jobs) task force, one of the few things he accomplished this year was to screw handles on the drawers in the Hawking II's longhouse the day before Coronis 2007 launched. During the mission proper, Ben served mainly in mission control with very few shifts as simulator. One part of mission control that year was doing parallax calculations, although more frequently there were Quickie Runs and mindless playing of Windows Games. At the end of April 2007, Ben learned of the existence of the wiki, was promoted to wikimaster by Stefan De Young, and wasted the rest of his high school career preoccupied with it.

At the end of this year, Ben started Spacesim's obsession with Munchkin, bringing in Fu and Cthulhu and spearheading the creation of Sim Munchkin. He also brought in a magnetic dart board that happened to be his science summative, and it was enjoyed by the denizens of the Office until he had to hand it in.
UTSDC
Ben has served as a member of three Spacesim UTSDC teams:
* 2007-08 - 3rd place (Senior)
* 2008-09 - DNR (Senior)
* 2009-10 - Current (Team1: Senior)

I'm declaring this a rubbish article. Formatting is screwed, it's outdated, and as a potential source of income, standards need to be met. ---RAEGMACHINE500Talk Page 16:53, 23 September 2010 (EDT)
Ooh, look, I'm writing on my own talk so it shows up in Recentchanges :D. Anyway, since no one else will, I'm writing this page. Don't think me arrogant or anything, and please correct any misconceptions. But please, mention them here before you change. The Magpipes are a series of tubes and funnels, going from 20 centimetres to several metres long, that Dr. Magwood can use expertly to create a range of musical tones. The tubes are made of various materials, with most being copper, steel, or plastic. The first recorded use of the Magpipes was at a work session in 2006-07. Olivia Frank has been known to have an affinity for the Magpipes.

Chemical toilets are toilets that do not use water or a flushing mechanism such as the one commonly found on a household toilet. Instead the chemical toilet uses chemicals which break down waste. Thus, the chemical toilets require no plumbing and are relatively cheap to maintain.
