Not to be confused with the sub-commanders, the subordinate Commanders of OCESS.

The Sub-Commander is a Commander of OCESS. The Sub-Commander is subordinate and assistant to the Mission Commander.

Selection
Similar to the Mission Commander, the hopeful Sub-Commander submits an application at the end of the school year. This application is read and evaluated by the current Mission Commander and the Admiral. The selected Sub-Commander is announced at the end-of-year barbeque. There is usually some ceremony involved in the announcement, involving the passing on of Office keys, the Sub-Commander Pin, and the Sub-Commander relic (the nature of which is classified).

Duties
Prior to the mission, the Sub-Commander's duties consist of helping the Mission Commander with their duties. This help may include writing, reading, and evaluating the Astronaut Applications, planning the mission (including meal schedules, shift schedules, experiments, navigation data, and any other paperwork), and ensuring that the Habitat is properly prepared for the mission. During the mission, the Sub-Commander is second in command of the Habitat, and will assume full command should the Mission Commander be rendered unfit for duty.

The University of Toronto Space Design Contest (UTSDC) is a competition hosted by a group of volunteers at the University of Toronto. Its purpose is to challenge teams of up to five to design a space-related system such as a lunar base or space station. The competition is adjudicated in two categories: Junior (Gr. 7-10) and Senior (Gr. 11-12), and winning submissions are added to the UTSDC-verse, which is a fictionalised extension of reality beginning in 2050 and continuing with the construction of the facilities proposed in aforementioned winning submissions.

The OCESS has participated three and a half times in the UTSDC and its various teams have won such awards as second and third places as well as best technical report. This participation is one of the factors that led the University of Toronto to sponsor the Galileo Challenge.

Point Five
In 2005-06 Mission Commanders Stephen Smith and Crystal Xiao attempted several times to form a UTSDC team, but ultimately failed to recruit any interested members. They did send away to the competition, however, voicing their hope that the OCESS might be permitted to participate in the future and expressing their desire, as student-led space-oriented organizations, to work together in some form in the future. The UTSDC responded by sending a letter expressing similar sentiments as well as a box of competition T-shirts.

In 2006-07 the OCESS UTSDC team led by then Mission Commander Brian Foo won second place overall. Their space-hotel, Endeavor, was also selected as the best technical report of the competition.

While in Toronto, team members enjoyed a tour of the university and its affiliated aerospace engineering facilities (UTIAS). They were then fortunate to be treated to an additional tour of the UTIAS space flight laboratory by spacesim alumnus and former Mission Commander Daniel Kekez, who is currently employed at UTIAS.

The 2007 team members were Brian Foo, Stefan De Young, Alex Foo, Jonathan Scothorn, and Guangye Cao.

Networking
After the 2007 team's success, then EEP Commander Jeff Gao used the access to the University of Toronto gained by his fellow spacesim members in order to negotiate a partnership with the University to ensure province-wide distribution of the Galileo Challenge.

2008 Contest
In 2008 the OCESS assembled a team to compete in the Senior category. The members of the 2008 team were Anthony Xing, Ben Paul, Daisy Wong, Maclean Rouble, and Arthur Quang. Their task was to design an Emergency Response System for the fledgling space infrastructure currently in existence in the fictional time line that all UTSDC projects follow. The competition was held on May 15-18, where the OCESS team gained third place. Mr. Paul, unfortunately, was unable to attend.

2009 Contest
In 2009 OCESS again competed in the Senior challenge, this year to create a training facility for young astronauts. Although Daisy Wong, Maclean Rouble, Ben Paul and Matt Farkas-Dyck contributed a fine project, they did not gain a prize, perhaps due to organizational issues caused by Maclean's absence in Belgium for the months preceding the report due date.

2010 Contest
In 2010 OCESS will once again compete in the Senior challenge, this year with two separate teams. The first team consists of Maclean Rouble, Ben Paul, Ian Martin and Amalissa Hum, while the second team consists of Bryce Storey, Samuel Baltz, Rutger Theodoor Ronald Jansen van Doorn Campbell, Peter Macdonald, and Yvonne Ho. The challenge is to protect the Earth from an incoming Near Earth Object, without any form of explosives.
MacleanXDhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/1992-931992-932010-03-28T15:14:38Z
MacleanXD:

Terraforming is a theoretical process of transforming a planet, moon, or other celestial body in order to make it suitable for human habitation. This transformation would typically involve changing the body's atmosphere, temperature, and ecology to suit human needs. The word "terraforming" literally means "Earth-forming"

Methods
Complete Terraforming
Complete terraforming refers to the terraforming of the entire celestial body.

The terraformation process is specific to each candidate body, and depends on the existing conditions. For example, a planet more distant than Earth from the Sun is likely to be too cold to support terrestrial life, and would need to be warmed. Likewise, a planet too close to the Sun would be to be cooled.

Several methods have been proposed for altering the temperature of a candidate body, including the use of orbital mirrors, alteration of the body's albedo, importation of perfluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons, and asteroid impacts.

Another modification that would be commonly required to terraform candidate bodies is the addition or modification of an atmosphere. In the case of a planet with an already-dense atmosphere, such as Venus, some atmosphere would need to be removed, and the high levels of unbreathable gases (for example, hydrogen sulphate) would need to be filtered. New gases might need to be imported if they are not already present.

Another challenge in terraforming is the abundance, or lack of, water on the candidate body. Some terraforming candidates (such as Europa) have an excess of water, whereas others (such as Mars) are lacking. Water could be imported from water-rich celestial bodies (for example, Europa, or the dwarf planet Ceres). Likewise, unneeded water could be exported to water-poor bodies.

Paraterraforming
Paraterraforming refers to the terraforming of a part of a body.

This is usually achieved by the construction of a dome or some other structure containing a self-sufficient ecosystem suitable to human habitation. There have been several attempts at similar projects on Earth (for example, Biosphere 2), which have been, in general, somewhat successful, but extremely expensive to construct and maintain.

It should be noted, however, that the cost of paraterraformation would (in most cases) be substantially less than the cost of complete terraformation, and, for the near future, it may be the more overall feasible process. Paraterraformed bodies could also later be completely terraformed, using the locally habitable areas as bases of operation for the larger process.

Candidate Bodies
Mars
The most popular candidate for terraforming is Mars, as Mars is the most Earth-like planet in our solar system. Mars would require warming and the addition of an atmosphere. As Mars' gravity is substantially less than Earth's, and it lacks a magnetosphere, it is possible that the atmosphere would have to be periodically replenished.

Venus
Another popular terraformation candidate, Venus would require cooling, the removal of large portions of its atmosphere, filtering of its harmful atmospheric gases (such as carbon dioxide), addition of oxygen, the and establishment of a magnetosphere to deflect incoming solar radiation.

Other Candidates
Several other bodies have been proposed as other possible candidates for terraforming. These include Mercury, Ganymede, Europa, Luna (Earth's moon), Titan, Callisto, and Ceres.

Daedalus 2009-10
During the 2009-10 mission, Daedalus, the Habitat deposited several pieces of terraforming equipment on Ganymede. Despite a malfunction in the equipment's initial deployment, which necessitated the Habitat's return to Ganymede, the systems seem to be functioning properly and have begun a complete terraformation. The process will require other visits over time to add new systems to adapt and work with the changing climate, as well as to replace or repair ageing or damaged equipment.

Every year, Spacesim conducts two types of missions: mini, or Training Missions usually lasting about 4 to 6 hours, and a 96-hour "Main Mission" to a celestial body in the solar system. Candidates for mission destinations have been planets, moons, and even asteroids as the OCESS astronauts search for their own educational experience in the depths of "space" by conducting experiments, simulated extra-terrestrial/space walks, piloting space vehicles and dealing with various simulated scenarios and problems that may play out over the course of a real space mission such as meteor strikes, ion storms and engine failures.

During the mission, the astronauts remain inside the Habitat, their only contact with the outside world being through a telephone, radios, webcams, and computers much like a real space mission. It is inside the Hab that they must eat, drink, sleep, play and carry out all life functions. These astronauts usually miss several days of school to wear flight suits and helmets while the rest of the school wishes they were missing school with them.
Mission History
The first mission in Ottawa took place in 1991-92. From then until the 2002-03 Mission, missions were 72-hours in duration. In fact, the 2001-02 mission was originally scheduled to be the first 96-hour mission, but was delayed 24 hours by the OCDSB.

Historically, missions ran from a Thursday to a Sunday, although recent times has seen them move to occupy more of the school week. The mission date was set for February by the International Student Space Simulation so that all missions would occur simultaneously. This practice continued until around 1995-96, at which point, mission date coordination only took place between Ottawa and our sister-mission in Lexington, South Carolina. The South Carolina exchanges ended in the late 90's, but the 2001-02 mission did involve an exchange with a school from Florida.
Europa is a moon of Jupiter. It is hypothesized that there is liquid water under Europa's surface of water ice, making it a prime candidate for extraterrestrial life.

Spacesim has visited Europa twice as a main mission destination:
*Europa 1997
*Daedalus 2010

Spacesim Findings
Radiation Hazard
Due to its location in the centre of a main Jovian Van Allen belt, the radiation at the surface of Europa is high. During the 2009-10 mission Daedalus, this caused the Hawking III to spend only 12 hours at a time on the surface, in order to retain enough fuel to run the radiation shields at a sufficiently high percentage (near 60% on RAD1). The Habitat was also required to burrow itself into the ice shelf -- that is to say, use its engines to melt a narrow trench, and once sufficiently deep within the trench, use short bursts of RCS thrusters to cave in a layer of ice above the roof of the Habitat. Despite these efforts, the astronauts suffered significantly more radiation than in most missions.

Laura is the remote-controlled submersible designed and constructed for the 2009-10 mission Daedalus to Europa, Ganymede, and Io.

Design
Laura is approximately 35cm in length, with a main hull width of approximately 8cm and a maximum width (including propeller nacelles) of approximately 20cm. She has three engines, two for horizontal thrust and one for vertical movement. Her top cover is removable, to allow access to her power cell, engine test mechanism, radio emitter and receiver, and sonar equipment. There is additional space inside her main body for other mechanisms and equipment to be added to suit the purposes of the mission. Attached to her hull are four removable sample collectors.

Deployment
Laura was designed to be deployed on ice-covered planets (for example, Europa), and so is fitted with an ice-boring capsule. This capsule uses heaters to melt a small tunnel through the ice, assisted by gravity, or, if gravity is insufficient, by treads. Once it reaches liquid water, the capsule hooks itself into the ice shelf, and remains there while Laura detaches.
Once separate from the capsule, she uses active and passive sonar to observe her surroundings, and transmits the information back to the capsule via radio signals. These signals are then relayed by the capsule to the Habitat via a tether cable. Likewise, control signals from the Habitat are sent through the tether to the capsule, which then transmits them to Laura using radio signals.

Software
Laura is remote controlled from inside the Habitat, using software designed by Jim Magwood. This software allows the user (typically a Mission Specialist) to control the submersible's attitude, velocity, depth, and sample collectors, by means of a rudder, dive planes, three propellers, and ballast loads. The software also gives the user a graphic display of Lauras passive sonar, active sonar, and fathmometer readings, as well as giving numerical data on water temperature, depth, and sonar contact distance.

Construction
Laura was contributed to by several members of OCESS, in an intermittent Task Force spearheaded by Mission Commander Maclean Rouble. Contributors included Jane MacLeod and Christian Angel. She is built primarily out of black PVC tubing, with clear plexiglass sides and lid. The sample collectors follow the design of syringes, and have matching sample storage containers aboard the Habitat in the form of narrow, clear plastic cylinders.
:::I disagree -- it's quicker and easier to just read them off the table. They can be stated in the article as well, in a less direct way, but if you're someone who just wants to get fast information (like me), the table's helpful. Is it possible to have a bunch of positions that can be included, but don't have to be? For example, this year we had two Mission Specialists, but in past years we've had more than that, or less than that, or none at all. So having rungs in the table that can be left blank and therefore do not show up would be nice. Don't know if you can do that or not, though, being somewhat of a wiki newbie. Also, as to how I'm feeling, I'm lovely, thanks, except that it feels like the room is on fire and my face is going to explode. I'm also apparently channeling Shaun (AssCreed2). In other news, I'm missing the worksession tomorrow. Pout. -- carter 22:20, 11 March 2010 (EST)

The 2008 Mission to Mars, or Mission Red Dawn, was the first mission run using the Engineering Closet and the new, smaller Hotlab. Other changes for this mission included:
* A new version of the Orbit software implementing solid rocket boosters (SRBs) for terrestrial liftoff and a reusable parachute for atmospheric reentry.
* A new, more comfortable EVA suit.

Experiments
Experiments were performed on the following subjects:
* effects of fatigue on mental ability
* effects of music on mental ability and heart rate
* effects of distracting stimuli on mental ability
* effects of longterm exposure to the Martian environment on the Viking I lander

Additionally, due to the emergency situation of the loss of 30% of the Habitat's water stores, an attempt was made to build a Sabatier reactor to produce additional water using the Martian atmosphere. This experiment was a partial success, as water was produced but could not be retrieved due to extreme weather conditions.

Notable Events
* CJOH showed up without RSVPing several hours before launch, and some of the preparations were featured in a news segment on 26 February.
* Launch was only two hours behind schedule, which is believed to be a record for recent OCESS missions.
* All power to the main engines was briefly lost during the initial insertion to Earth orbit; however, the auxiliary power bus functioned properly, and a safe orbit was achieved.
* A total of five scheduled EVAs were performed, as well as several additional EVAs to repair damage and set up the Sabatier reactor.
* A powerful storm on the last night briefly incapacitated Cdr Hotson and Lt Rouble while they were on EVA to collect the water produced by the Sabatier reactor; however, Lt Cdr Xing was able to retrieve them safely.
* Landing at the OCESS facilities in Ottawa was at approximately 1415 EST; initial reentry was over Chicago, which was judged not to be an optimal landing site.
The Powerspoon was a regular spoon that was fitted into the drill the astronauts carried to Mars during Mission Red Dawn 2008. Using the Powerspoon, chocolate milk mix could be mixed up in much less time. It was created by Nevin Hotson, Habitat Commander of Red Dawn. Daisy Wong, the mission's medic, prevented Nevin from putting the spoon, still attached to the drill, into his mouth to get the clumps of chocolate off.

During Red Dawn, Powerthirst was used in distraction experiments, and there is a line in Powerthirst where the narrator talks about adding chocolate to an electrical storm.
MacleanXDhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/AstronautsAstronauts2009-12-22T19:48:23Z
MacleanXD: /* Crew Positions */

In the context of the OCESS's annual Mission, the astronauts are the members who enter the Habitat for the purposes of simulating space flight and exploration.

The astronaut positions are coveted amongst members of the OCESS as only a few positions are available, and those who go will always remember the experience. That however is only half the story (or a third if you ignore mission integrity) as two other groups of students exist within the OCESS (these being the Mission Control Staff, and the Simulator) providing an enjoyable experience for all.
Spacesim Groups

Purpose
The purpose of astronauts is to collect the data from the experiments, simulate living in space, and react to Mission Control's decisions. They are isolated from the outside world for the duration of the mission, during which time they experience the trials and tribulations of space exploration.

Crew Positions
As far as known, in OCESS's early days, crew roles were not specified except the role of the commander. In one account by a exchange member from Lexington, he contrasted the Lexington Simulation's segregation of roles with Lisgar Simulation's flexible duties. When Robbie the Robot was introduced, a specialized position was informally created for its operations. Starting with the 2003-04 Mission to the Moon, OCESS gradually created and formalized astronaut positions.
*Co-pilot
*Chief Engineer
*Medic
*Communication Officer
*Payload Specialist
*Mission Specialist

On more recent missions, several of these positions have been switched out in favour of the older approach of flexible duties, leaving the formal astronaut positions as follows:

*Habitat Commander
*Habitat Sub-Commander
*Pilot
*Co-pilot
*Medic
*Payload Specialist

Note that the rank of Subcommander may be held in addition to another (for example, medic). Note also that not every mission has a Payload Specialist aboard.

Not to be confused with IVA

Extra-Vehicular Activity (or EVA) is the term for any activity that involves astronauts venturing outside the Habitat, for any reason, during the mission. EVAs typically involve two astronauts, and last for no more than fifteen minutes.

Reasons for EVAs
Damage to Habitat
If the Habitat is damaged in such a way that requires outside access (i.e., holes from meteoroid impacts, engine malfunctions, etc.), astronauts may embark on EVA to repair said damage.
Exploration
Once the Habitat has landed, it is customary to embark on an Exploratory EVA. This involves two astronauts going outside of the Habitat to perform a preliminary survey of the planetary surface.

EVA Protocol
Prior to deciding to embark on any EVA, the Habitat crew must inform Mission Control of their intentions, their choice of astronauts for the EVA, and obtain Mission Control's approval. After said approval is obtained, two astronauts not going on the EVA assist the two EVA astronauts in getting into their EVA suits. Once the EVA astronauts are prepared to embark, they enter the airlock. The other astronauts obtain permission from MC to depressurize the airlock, and then depressurize it. Once it has been completely depressurized, the EVA astronauts are given permission by the Mission Commander (or Subcommander, if the Mission Commander is incapacitated) to embark.

Once the EVA objectives have been completed, the EVA astronauts return to the airlock door and request permission to enter. The astronauts aboard the Habitat ensure that the airlock is still at equal pressure to the outside environment, and then grant the requested permission. The EVA astronauts then enter the airlock, and inform the other astronauts when they have sealed the outer door behind them. The other astronauts acknowledge that the EVA astronauts are inside, and repressurize the airlock. When it is repressurized, the astronauts activate the Decontamination Cycle and inform the EVA astronauts that said cycle is in progress. When the cycle is complete and all EVA astronauts are detected as clean of any contaminants, the astronauts aboard the Habitat inform the EVA astronauts that it is safe to open the inner door.

Once successfully returned to the Habitat, the two astronauts who helped suit-up the EVA astronauts help remove the suits. The suits are folded and stored properly on the racks in the airlock.
Not to be confused with the subcommanders, the subordinate Commanders of OCESS.

The Subcommander is a Commander of OCESS. The Subcommander is subordinate and assistant to the Mission Commander.

Selection
Similar to the Mission Commander, the hopeful Subcommander submits an application at the end of the school year. This application is read and evaluated by the current Mission Commander and the Admiral. The selected Subcommander is announced at the end-of-year barbeque. There is usually some ceremony involved in the announcement, involving the passing on of Office keys, the Subcommander Pin, and the Subcommander relic (the nature of which is classified).

Duties
Prior to the mission, the Subcommander's duties consist of helping the Mission Commander with their duties. This help may include writing, reading, and evaluating the Astronaut Applications, planning the mission (including meal schedules, shift schedules, experiments, navigation data, and any other paperwork), and ensuring that the Habitat is properly prepared for the mission. During the mission, the Subcommander is second in command of the Habitat, and will assume full command should the Mission Commander be rendered unfit for duty.

The pilot is the member of the astronaut crew responsible for piloting the hab. Since this task is extremely important, and difficult to learn, the pilot occupies a place of utmost importance in the flight crew.

Currently, pilots uses the Orbit software to perform the various duties associated with navigating the habitat. Because being a successful pilot often means great familiarity with the said program, pilots often are very well acquainted with the other software involved in the simulation as well. Due to training needs, pilots can often fly the entire Habitat systems, including the engineering software and the EECOM software, provided that simulated disasters do not strike the three software at the same time. The role of GUIDO in MC is closely associated with the job of the pilot, and MC personnel assigned to GUIDO often go through similar trainings. Another side effect of this is manifested in the fact that capable pilots tend to be dedicated and involved members of Spacesim, and often becoming the second in the command chain on board any given mission, assuming that they are not the first.

Since pilot training is not an immediately interesting activity, as well as the extra effort that is needed to master this art as compared to the art of destroying the habitat, most members are not capable of flying as pilot, and the population of capable pilots at any given time always tended to be low. However, the situation is changing as the Subcommander, and designate pilot Maclean Rouble also happens to be an avid pilot instructor.

To run a club such as Spacesim, a basic command structure has been developed. Although this structure has been changed as possitions are added and taken away, the structure retains a general form. The general form consists of three layers of administration as follows.

Archaic Formats
The system used until 2007-08 had two Mission Commanders, two EEPS Commanders, and two Planetarium Commanders, as well as the lesser directors.

Layout
Executive Branch
The Executive branch of the administration deals with running Spacesim as a whole. This group of people consists of the admiral, the Mission Commander, the Education Commander, and the Subcommander. A new commander position was created for 2009-10: the Engineering Commander. These people have sweeping powers over all aspects of Sim and are expected to manage it as a whole; looking after the budget, administering projects, and such things.

Subcommanders
The subcommanders are considered one under the executive branch. Their job is to cover the specific branches of Sim. These include the Planetarium Commander who is the second-in-command under the Education Commander and who is responsible for the educational branch of Sim. The currently defunct PR Director who is in charge of public relations for Spacesim, is also a subcommander as is the Webmaster. This term should be changed to prevent confusion with the deputy Mission Commander, or subcommander.

Directors
The directors are one step lower than subcommanders on the hierarchy. They include the Quartermaster and the Wikimaster, though on the forums the webmaster is included in directors instead of subcommanders. The directors are in charge of specialized areas of Sim, and so therefore are not as important to the club.

A flight suit is a pair of white or blue coveralls that is worn primarily by the astronauts. Flight suits are nominally required for the astronauts during the Mission's "work times", in an effort to increase Mission Integrity, and to lend a professional feeling. Flight suits are optional for Mission Control, but they encourage mission integrity. They are decorated by mission patches and come in multiple sizes, though one size can usually fit all.
Once, it was required that all members purchase a flight suit for work session activities. It was so to protect the wearer's clothes from the unusually high amounts of dust and other dirtying substances that existed at the work session facilities. However, in recent years, especially after funding was cut off in 2001-02, the rules have relaxed and most members now use flight suits owned and left at Spacesim by alumni, though senior members, especially astronauts, often still purchase their own flight suits for various reasons, such as the accumulation of patches.

Other uses
Many Spacesim members wear flight suits for the Week of Hype, as well as during many Lisgar events, to represent Spacesim. This was the case with the 2008 Spacesim Assembly as well as the Spacesim Dodgeball Team. It is also a tradition to wear them during Quickie Runs.

Flight Suits are not to be confused with EVA Suits, though during the 2007-08 Mission (Red Dawn), the flight suits, along with the "corsets" and tights/long underwear were used as the backup, emergency pressure suits.
MacleanXDhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Anthony_XingAnthony Xing2009-11-27T02:17:30Z
MacleanXD:

The 2009-10 mission takes OCESS to three of the moons of Jupiter: Europa, Ganymede, and Io. The Habitat will be passing near Io to collect samples of volcanic dust ejected by tectonic activity on the moon's surface, landing on Ganymede to set upTerraforming equipment, and spending the rest of the mission on Europa. An unmanned submersible is currently under construction, explore the liquid water ocean and rocky planetary core beneath Europa's surface.
