Lore

The Nicely Done, Lyra sign was created during Mission Daedalus by acting Flight Director Ben Paul. It was written on a white 8*11 paper in the Spacesim Office, and addressed astronaut Lyra Evans. It was created when Lyra made a particularly funny joke about astronaut Euan Wheaton, and held up to the webcam so that those in the habitat could see it. After that, whenever Lyra would do something particularly noteworthy, either positive or negative, someone would hold up the sign. The original sign is currently in the possession of Ben Paul.

Uses During Daedalus
Original Use
The original use followed a conversation between Lyra Evans and acting CAPCOM Samuel Baltz. Preceding the conversation Mission Control was certain that it had heard Lyra Evans ending her sentences with "over" while talking to Euan Wheaton, and wanted to make sure that she hadn't been trying to talk to MC.

Director Baltz: "Lt. Evans, are you talking to us? Over."
:Lt. Evans: "No, I was talking to Euan."
Director Baltz: "Then why were you ending your sentences with 'over'? Over."
:Lt. Evans: "Because I was talking to Euan. It's like talking to someone a million miles away."

At this point Ben Paul wrote the sign and held it up to the camera. Since the webcams being used for CAPCOM were not set to high resolution, Lt. Evans put a confused look on her face as all she could see was a seemingly blank piece of paper. At that point in time, Arrian Amir-Rafiei took the piece of paper from Ben Paul and pulled a sharpie marker out of his pocket. After thickening the letters, Arrian Amir-Rafiei handed the piece of paper back to Ben Paul. Ben Paul again held the piece of paper up to the webcam, and this caused everyone in MC and the habitat to laugh.

Subsequent Uses
*When Lyra overpressurized the airlock the next hour with EECOM, the sign was held up for Maclean Rouble as co-pilot and CAPCOM.
*"Nicely Done, ____" has become a phrase used either to express disgust, praise, or amusement.
*"Nicely Dunbar" has been used several times in reference to Matthew Dunbar, most notably when receiving a chocolate bar "award" for his superb piloting on Dragan 2011.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Drake-Sagan_2011Drake-Sagan 20112019-05-31T22:51:56Z
JimMagwood:

The 2011 Mission to Gliese 581f, Mission Drake-Sagan or Mission Dragan, was the first mission to exit the solar system, and the third mission in the Hawking III. The first ever Earth-like exoplanet, Gliese 581 g, was discovered in 2010, and Spacesim selected the Gliese 581 planetary system as the mission destination. ==Mission Purpose==
During Mission Daedalus, then-Mission Commander Maclean Rouble discovered a strange unexplained signal in the oceans of Europa. It was surprising because of both its strength and its regularity. Vice-Admiral Rouble did not follow the signal or tell Mission Control about it because it was only detected late at night on their last night on Europa, and she knew that if she told anyone else she would be ordered to investigate. She decided that keeping it secret was best for the safety of her crew, but she wrote a paragraph on it and saved it to the network. This paragraph was kept top secret until late 2010. It's worth noting that what precedes is the Beta reality version of events; in-Alpha, the paragraph was written by Jim Magwood shortly before Mission Dragan. Mission Dragan's purpose was to land on Europa, drop the LAURA submersible into the oceans of Europa, and trace the signal to its origins. The astronauts were tasked with following up on and gathering as much data from the signal as possible. Their goal was to explain its presence. To achieve this goal, the habitat was understood to have been outfitted to survive short trips underwater (the rough pseudoscience explanation was that the habitat has an outside shell that, when filled with enough water, will equalize the pressure between the hab and the surrounding ocean).

In-Beta Mission Results
The habitat reached Europa within a day or so and with very minor difficulties. The astronauts received perhaps a bit too much radiation in both Earth's and Jupiter's van Allen belts, but other than that there were no major problems. The habitat flight path involved a gravitational assist from the sun to get to Jupiter (the mission used the 2004 orientation of planets to which Orbit defaults, in which Jupiter is on the other side of the sun from the Earth), and, notably, the astronauts were able to load over 400,000 kg of fuel for the reactor at approximately 4.5 million kilometers from the sun. The members of Spacesim would be well-served to remember this trick (Jupiter has enough hydrogen isotopes in its upper atmosphere that it too should be able to provide fuel at a reasonably far distance, although future crews should experiment to see if this is possible). Unfortunately, when the astronauts reached Jupiter, a split-second software malfunction caused the habitat to not stop at Jupiter's upper atmosphere. Astronauts report seeing AYSE move slowly towards Jupiter, freeze, and then suddenly be bounced out of Jupiter at tremendous velocity. Every single AYSE engine broke simultaneously and the astronauts were forced to undock from the AYSE drive. When AYSE suddenly reversed course, Mission Control's software read it as sudden wind of particles coming away from Jupiter, but scientists who subsequently worked on the problem proved that, if the AYSE drive reached a sufficient speed, it's possible that it reached a pocket of high-pressure gas and just bounced off; Admiral Magwood invoked the analogy of throwing a beach ball into a swimming pool. V. Adm. Lyra Evans is credited with the proof. After undocking the habitat from the AYSE drive, the astronauts could have loaded fuel from AYSE and headed home with minimal risk to their safety. Instead, then-Mission Commander Ian Martin and the crew decided to forge ahead and investigate the anomaly. Upon landing on Europa, they deployed the submarine, which bore a radio censor, a communicator that was able to speak to the habitat though Europa's massive ice layer, and a camera in the visual light spectrum --- although no light, so it could only take pictures of light-emitting objects. Submarine Pilot Samuel Baltz piloted the submarine to the anomaly. When it reached the anomaly, a massive time delay suddenly accompanied its communications. When it was finally able to send a complete picture in the visual spectrum, the picture depicted a very strange field of stars. Through triangulation, Olivia Frank and Arrian LeClaire determined that the submersible was now suddenly located 23.5 lightyears away, in the vicinity of the gliese 581 planetary system. The next Earth Day, the habitat followed suit. Arrian LeClaire and Matt Dunbar piloted the habitat to the closest planet in the star system, gliese 581 f. Once on this planet, each astronaut went on EVA in pairs. The EVAs reported some interesting rock formations. For a full video of one of the EVAs, see the Oce Spacesim facebook page. With the EVAs completed, the astronauts went back through the anomaly (and were quite pleased that it was possible to go back through the anomaly), and attempted to get back to Earth from Jupiter. Without AYSE, there was barely enough fuel to return to Earth. Unfortunately, an astronaut carelessly left a light on, just before the pilot heavily turned up time acceleration, which burned up too much fuel and caused the habitat not to be able to reenter the atmosphere. The habitat bounced off of earth atmosphere, and the crew was rescued in a 2011-12 training mission (although their appearances had been altered significantly by their time in space). The LAURA submersible is currently somewhere near the gliese 581 f star system, beaming pictures back to Earth at light speed. Approximately 23.5 years from 2010-11, OCESS will begin to recieve LAURA's first pictures of the great unknown.

Alpha Systems Developments
*This was the second mission to work with the permanent planetary surface, adding a massive wall and some pillars to the existing cave. Jane MacLeod, Zola Magwood, Nick Eglin, Lyra Evans, and Alex Mendes among others are to be credited with this truly magnificent permanent structure. This was also the second mission wherein the planetary surface was referred to as the "monetary surplus" in the weeks leading up to the mission (thanks to Euan Wheaton). None of the astronauts saw the planetary surface before the mission.
*A massive overhaul of the camera network occurred for this mission. Instigated by the 2010-11 Occupational Health And Safety Incident, and OHS's demand that room W027 have all their wires in conduits, the camera systems were completely restructured. Conduits were dropped through for every single camera, television, and computer, and a juncture box was placed in Command and Control. This box was completely switchable; an old playstation feed switching device was implemented so that with the press of a button, any feed would show up on pumpkin. The wires were threaded through the Simulator Loft so that with minimal effort the simulators could cut the insulation and tap into the signals, although they did not make use of this during the mission. This fully functional camera system lasted until 2012-13 when it was partially dismantled for unknown reasons.
*White noise was first used on this mission, which required the spacing of speakers across the top of the habitat. Various old speakers (just the speakers themselves, no boxes) were lying around in Keplernicus, and so they were placed flush against the habitat, at least 1 per room, and then wired together in series with an iPod playing white noise on loop for the whole week
*Admiral Magwood programmed the gliese 581 star system into Orbit and the anomaly into the sub program (and likely also took out the strange Russian submarines ever-present in that software), which was a truly monumental amount of work.

Highlights
*The mission started one day late (an improvement over the previous year).
*A news article published in the Ottawa Citizen regarding the mission.
*Canadian Astronaut and now VP of outreach for the CIHR Robert Thirsk came to witness the mission briefly.
*Poor decorum in MC and truly abominable decorum among some simulators lead to Samuel's and Arrian's ES1 Reprimands

Lore
Sim Lore that originated with or saw heavy use during this mission include:
*Mmm... Well That's Disappointing and the associated voice
*"WHAT stop sign!?"
*Anthony Wong as a cold-water magic man giver of life (when Anthony Wong entered MC, the habitats chanted "Wong! Wong! Wong!" loud enough that MC could clearly hear them even over all the white noise)
*Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego?

Proofs
NPOV
I seek to establish that the habitat can enter a black hole of sufficient mass without ripping apart. Such a proof, if applicable to the anomaly, shows that what the astronauts experienced is perfectly plausible.
Take the habitat to be, say, 100m in diameter (for argument's sake). Take a black hole the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy with m_bh = (3*10^6)*M_0, where M_0 is the mass of the sun. Then the difference in acceleration between the part of the hab closest to the black hole and the part of the hab farthest from the black hole, call it d(a), at the event horizon (which is what we need to reach in order to enter the wormhole), is given by:

d(a) = F_g as a function of the radius of the black hole's event horizon plus the diameter of the hab - F_g as a function of just the radius of the black hole's event horizon

So we must find the radius of the black hole's event horizon, call it R, so:

R = 2*G*M/c^2

R = 2*(6.67*10^-11 units)*(3*10^36 kg) / (3*10^8 ms^-1)^2

R = 9*10^9 m

Then

d(a) = G*M_bh/(R^2 + diameter of hab) - G*M_bh/(R^2)

d(a) = (6.67*10^-11)*(3*10^36 kg) / (9*10^9 m + 100 m)^2 - (6.67*10^-11)*(3*10^36 kg) / (9*10^9 m)^2

d(a) = 5*10^-2 ms^-2

I submit that the habitat is sufficiently strong to survive this small a difference in acceleration (and the submersible certainly is, since it`s much, much smaller in diameter). Regarding the size of the event horizon, I think it's perfectly plausible that the wormhole functionally had an event horizon this size while in the oceans of Europa simply because wormholes bend space. If the mass of the wormhole was sufficient, then, what the astronauts experienced is perfectly explainable.
Anthony Xing, Matthew Farkas-Dyck, and Ben Paul argued about how to retrieve the missing astronauts, a delicate situation considering there was now only one EVA suit in the Habitat at this point and lightning and high wind speeds had been observed on the surface through EECOM. In the end, although he was Lieutenant Commander and should not have risked himself, Anthony went on EVA and brought back both Maclean and Nevin, whose suits had been locked in the dust storm.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/TapekachuTapekachu2019-05-31T22:48:17Z
JimMagwood:

Lore
Tapekachu, pronounced tape-katchu, is a tape sculpture of a Pikachu that currently resides in the office. It is based on a plastic Pikachu toy that used to make noises and was brought in by Maclean Rouble. Tapekachu is likely to be featured as a monster in the upcoming Spacesim Munchkin being developed by Ben Paul.

Creation
The Tapekachu was made by Arrian Amir-Rafiei during the 2008-09 second semester exams. It was made out of clear sticky tape, and later covered with masking tape and colored with a black marker to make it look more like Pikachu.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Singing_HourSinging Hour2019-05-31T22:12:16Z
JimMagwood:

Lore
Singing Hour was the 2009-10 April Fool's Day joke. It was perpetrated by Samuel Baltz with the knowledge and co-operation of Maclean Rouble, Peter Macdonald, and Dr. Magwood. The idea of a singing hour was Peter Macdonald's idea after Maclean Rouble decided that the first idea for a joke was not funny, and Samuel Baltz filled in the details while explaining the proposition to Spacesim.
The Joke
During the lunch meeting on April 1, 2010, the following story was told to the assembled members of Spacesim:

Samuel Baltz and Stefan De Young wrote a proposal for funding and submitted it to the OCDSB. They received an email back saying that Spacesim was too obviously based at Lisgar, and that in order to receive funding directly from the school board Spacesim should have a much wider base of support from across a large variety of schools. Accordingly, Baltz and De Young wrote another proposal and sent it to Canterbury High School. Canterbury's principal liked the idea, but thought that it was necessary that Spacesim cover more cross-curricular material. Accordingly, the Canterbury guidance department agreed to promote Spacesim to their students on the condition that there be an hour per work session of mandatory singing.

Effect
The perpetrators of the practical joke were immensely surprised to find that a large portion of members immediately believed the joke, and that it started a serious and productive conversation about funding and how each member could help. Baltz spent the rest of the lunch period arguing with various members about whether the singing was worthwhile in order to court extra members, and it was never explained that the episode was entirely fictitious. Stefan De Young was informed of his involvement in the story that night, and by all accounts he thought it was humorous.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/List_of_MemesList of Memes2019-05-31T22:10:53Z
JimMagwood:

Memes are jokes, phrases, or events that have become part of Sim Culture. They are usually based off mission events and nerd culture. The following list is presented in alphabetical order.

Catclan
Created during the 2009-10 year by Charlotte Bonyun. The concept started out with Becca Kalinger being nicknamed "Spazzcat" due to her very cat-like manners and habits, but eventually expanded and named a large variety of people within Spacesim.

Rules for the naming of a Catclan member to-be have evolved with the group; a tendency to have the names start with the letter "s" became a rule, a spelling quirk made by the first male member, Spartakat (later Stargakat), having the ending with a "k" instead of a "c" became a rule for all following male members. A tacit rule also has the nicknames kept to three syllables or less, excluding the "cat/kat."

According to Charlotte Bonyun, a Catclan name becomes official once she hears of it.

Catclan Members
The Final Countdown
The Final Countdown is a song by Europe that became popular in Spacesim in 2009-10. It was notably used as a preface to the countdown for Daedalus 2010 and as a wake-up song for the final day of that mission. The song is regularly played in the Habitat during training missions and in the Interlock or Command and Control during work sessions.

The Game
The Game is frequently played by members of Spacesim. To play The Game, please go here.

McSquiggly
A phenomenon on the Forums started by Lyra Evans, the forums' censor filter was used to replace all instances of the word "and" with the words "and McSquiggly and". For example, "We are currently working on doors and the sub" would be rendered as "We are currently working on doors and McSquiggly and the sub." It is assumed that the original purpose was to see how long it would take someone to post something on the forums asking about what was going on. The first person to do this was Ian Martin, two months after the inception of McSquiggly. It was later revealed that Forums' administrators Ben Paul and Maclean Rouble had been in on the joke from the beginning. Possibly after complaints, Lyra censored McSquiggly to "I'm Hanging onto dying traditions." A thread of the forum was dedicated to the death of McSquiggly, and it was a rather sombre affair until Samuel Baltz discovered that MCSQUIGGLY in all caps was not censored.

Monetary Surplus
Monetary Surplus is a euphemism for the Planetary Surface, used as a means of maintaining mission integrity. It came into fruition leading up to Mission Daedalus 2010. Euan Wheaton invented the phrase after purposely mishearing someone saying "planetary surface". Many jibes at Spacesim's financial situation followed the phrase's invention.

Nicely Done, Lyra
The Nicely Done, Lyra sign was created during Mission Daedalus 2010 by acting Flight Director Ben Paul written written on a white 8*11 paper in the Spacesim Office, and addressed astronaut Lyra Evans. It was created when Lyra, during dialog with Mission Control made a particularly funny joke about astronaut Euan Wheaton. The sign was held up to the CAPCOM webcam for the benefit of the Habitat crew. The sign was then presented whenever Lyra would accomplish any noteworthy action, such as overpressurising the Airlock later in that same mission.

Original Dialog
Preceding the conversation Mission Control was certain that it had heard Lyra Evans ending her sentences with "over" while talking to Euan Wheaton, and wanted to make sure that she hadn't been trying to talk to MC.

Mr. Baltz: "Lt. Evans, are you talking to us? Over."
:Lt. Evans: "No, I was talking to Euan."
Mr. Baltz: "Then why were you ending your sentences with 'over'? Over."
:Lt. Evans: "Because I was talking to Euan. It's like talking to someone a million miles away."

Phrases
*"Imma firin' ma lazar! BAAAH!"
*"Its all over yar face!!"
*"SHAWG!"
*"IT'S OVER 9000"
*"Rectum? Damn near killed'em!"
*"PART OF THE SHIP: PART OF THE CREW"

Trogdor
Trogdor the Burninator is a cartoon character from Homestar Runner animated movies first appearing in the sbemail "Dragon" where "kaizer" from California wanted to know if Strong Bad could draw a dragon. Strong Bad's first attempt fails (he ends up writing "The S is for sucks"). He tries again (using what he refers to as "Consumate Vs") and creates Trogdor the Burninator.

Trogdor has been part of Sim Culture at least since witty Spacesim members created their own version of the song and wrote it on the Habitat in the allotted space during Signing the Airlock. The Spacesim lyrics, thought to be written by Stefan De Young, replaces such lines as "Burninating all the peoples and their THATCHED ROOF COTTAGES!" with "Burninating all the astros in their DRYWALL HABITAT!" A handwritten copy of the original lyrics from the the heavy metal song about Trogdor is posted in the Sim Office, but it is inaccurate. Instead of having two "TROGDOR!"s, it has three.

We All Live In A Drywall Habitat
We All Live In A Drywall Habitat is a parody of the Beatles song Yellow Submarine. The song describes astronauts running around the Habitat screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs and banging very hard on every wall of the habitat.

The song was first sung during the 2008-09 mission Genesis to Iapetus. During the mission there were no set lyrics, but afterward the lyrics to the song were typed up and posted on the wall of the habitat by Zola Magwood.

Zarr
"Zarr" is a phrase invented by Cheyenne Carty as an amalgamation of the words "is" and "are." The phrase is used by members of Spacesim when giving each other props. The opposite of Zarr is Tard, though logically it should be Rraz.

The Zarr is initiated when a person is observed to be doing something props-worthy. If a Zarr is initiated to celebrate an action of the initiator, that person should be Tarded by hitting their outstretched fist in the style of "Bloody Knuckles." In the case where the target of Zarr is too distant, a Chain-Zarr may be initiated, where a Zarr is passed from person to person until reaching the intended recipient.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Debriefing_2009-10Debriefing 2009-102019-05-31T22:00:29Z
JimMagwood:

This is an account of the 2009-10 mission debriefing for Daedalus 2010 that took place at the March 5th work session.

NPOVThe participants responsible for each discussion point have been identified so that any misrepresentations can be corrected quickly (any mistakes can be blamed on DM). However, each point also represents opions expressed by other people at the meeting. This was a discussion.

It is assumed that some eager spacesim member will take it upon themselves to reorganize this into a format to which other members can more easily add their thoughts and ideas.

The meeting was divided into a discussion of what we thought went well and what we were less happy with. We mostly succeeded in following this plan.

Return to mission 2009-10 summary.

Positives
Maclean Rouble
*We were only 2 days late launching, better than last year.
*There were fewer glitches during the mission - the EECOM software had the most glitches.
*The planetary surface was really good.
*There were not too many disasters.
*"Final Countdown" was much appreciated.
*The fan made the command centre much more comfortable.

On the other hand:
*There was too little time to explore the surface of "Europa"
*The high radiation levels imposed additional limits on the time spent on Europa.
*It was too difficult to change the computer used for specific software.
*We need a common folder with a copy of all of the different software applications and supplementary files.
Matt Farkas-Dyck
*Mission protocols were better and better followed than last year.
*The cameras worked.
*The VPN worked and allowed MC to be held at Lisgar for most of the day.
*MC at lisgar was really good.
*MC shifts were well planned and were used. The was an experienced flight director for each shift.
*More people were present in MC compared to previous years.
*It would be nice to be able to have MC camera and audio logs: VHS or a really big hard disk.

Negatives
Maclean Rouble
*Non-mission related noise
**the longhouse needs more sound proofing
**mission integrity and ones ability to accept the reality of the mission are destroyed by extraneous noise
**mission integrity was most compromised when in the bunks (less noise from within the hab as well)
***we need to seal the other edges of the longhouse door (DM)
***we need to install the speaker for the longhouse to broadcast white noise and ship sounds (Ben Paul)
*The launch was two days late. This leads to other events getting off schedule, less time for mission events, and missing many activities.

Alex Mendes
*we need better capcom training

Ben Paul
*Not enough simulators present most of the time.
**DM stresses that more non-astronauts need to commit to miss classes during mission week. If the mission is important enough for astronauts to miss school, it is important enough for the rest of us to miss school. Even DM skipped some classes.
*We need to make sure that grade 11 students are trained to assume command duties during the next year.
*Lots of mini-missions need to take place after the main mission.

Euan Wheaton
*We need to have more disasters and other "events" during the day.
**this relates to the previous comment by Ben Paul

Zola Magwood
*The electrical bus short circuit set up by the simulators was not recognised by either astronauts or MC staff.
**we need to have a lot more training on how to recognise different situations; these are in the manual and some practicing took place, but in the heat of the situation it is easy to miss small signs or situations that were not repeatedly practiced DM
*Simmulator schedules need to be more strictly followed.
**We need more people to skip school so that we can have people carrying out sim activities in a co-ordinated fashion: events on the surface and the correct things happening on the balcony at the same time.
**We also need to have monitoring of the software and cameras at the same time as people are working on the surface with the ability to communicate between them
**However, the sim balcony is not a general observation post. This makes sim activities more difficult to carry out

Jane MacLeod
*There were too many people at 440 Albert St. on Friday night. The people who needed to be there had a hard time getting their jobs done and there were not enough places for people to catch a quick nap when the schedule of events allowed.
**more people need to commit to work during the day
**permission forms need to be handed in early enough so that a simulator schedule can be drawn up
**there should be a sign-up for overnight shifts at 440 Albert Street
**perhaps we can set up a place or website with video and audio coverage of the HAB and MC where people can watch the mission unfold. This way, we would not have extra people crowding the sim office and 440 Albert Street - sim members who do have a legitimate interest in seeing what is unfolding. (DM)

Ian Martin
*Better use could be made of the current events board outside of the sim office: due dates for forms, schedules, mission events, etc.
*Some people seemed to be doing things on purpose that impeded the progress of the mission (e.g., venting hotlab)
*Don't carry out certain procedures without clearance (venting rooms, etc.); both MC and HAB needs to know what is going on and the sims need to hear plans as well.

Elizabeth Robson Gordon
*We need to have deputy MC and simulator commanders during mission week.
*Too much time was spent in-flight, especially given the late launch.
**this did not leave enough time for many interesting events that had been planned, especially on Friday night and Saturday morning
*We need better and more healthy sleep habits for all participants working on overnight shifts.

Matt Farkas-Dyck
*Good sleep habits would be easier if more MC/sim people took the whole week off.
*perhaps taking the week off would be easier if the mission was earlier in the second semester.

Morgan Mersereau
*We need to have back-up people for the MC and simulator schedule in case people get sick or cannot attend an assigned shift.
*We also need to have a better alarm clock and protocl for walking astronauts up (no complaints from astronauts, please).
*We need to get better seats in MC (ones that are comfortable, but do not take up too much space).

Arrian Amir-Rafiei
*The simulators need better access to telemetry (more computers to display more information simultaneously).
*Earth station 1 was a badly prepared idea (the perpetrator (DM) agrees)
**often there was poor co-operation between MC and ES1
**ES1 did not follow good protocol
**ES1 should conduct discreet comms with MC or with MC flight director only
*repeated requests for the same information or procedures is annoying.
**better protocols for comms are needed
**a log of requests for both MC and HAB is needed so that requests are not forgotten and outstanding requests can be noted periodically ("HAB MC we are still working on your request for...") so that the other side knows that they have not been forgotten. A similar log of sent requests would help so that the requester does not forget what they have asked for. White boards, perhaps?
*We need to have back-up computers ready to start at both MC and in the HAB (with the software folder already installed).
**a protocol for transferring up-to-date data files must be prepared
**the backup computers need to be registered with the server computer before the mission
*Training issues:
**not enough took place for MC CAPCOM and AUXCOM, many people lack the experience needed (esp. w.r.t. language protocols)
**need more professionalism in comms
**IMPORTANT: acknowledgement comes from the flight directord or acting mission commander, NOT from capcom
*Planning of shifts should be a group process with representation from astronauts, MC staff, and simulators.
*need a net-meeting alternative with more flexibility

Jane MacLeod
*We need better training and an SOP and script for transfer of control between MC @ Lisgar and MC @ 440 Albert St.
*A separate staff should be on hand at the new location before transferring control.

Lyra Evans
*Astronaut shifts need to be changed to have different sleep times so that more operations can be carried out at night.
**however, we need to have all astronauts awake together for substantial periods so that crew cohesion is maintained (meal times)
*Mission alpha was missed. An alpha mission would have reduced many of the problems on the main mission.
*More professionalism is needed in the interactions between MC and the HAB.

Ian Martin & Bryn Beynon
*Boredom in MC is a problem.
**shorter shifts with more structure (30 min on one station, 30 minutes on the next...)
**more activities and critical duties for MC staff to perform
**more scheduled interaction between flight director and other MC staff (and for cross-checks with HAB)
*Need more people to share shifts so that people can go on scheduled breaks
*MC should not be just about monitoring
Other Comments
*Fewer people in command center in HAB - less distraction
*If there are more emergencies (less disruptive ones perhaps) the less exciting intervals of time might be better appreciated
I am very pleased to have been a part of the mission this year. We accomplished a lot and we should be proud of the results of our efforts. I think that this was a worthwhile mission, in spite of all the problems. However, in retrospect, we tried too hard to get too many new innovations ready. If we had not waited for the phones, buzzers, door circuits and several other things that did not get done in time we would have launched closer to the appointed time and not been any worse off for hardware (comms and others) than we were anyway. It is hard to see that certain project are better abandoned for next year when they seem so close to being done. However, we could have had more time and more things to do on the surface during that time if we had spent our time differently. That being said, I am as guilty as anyone of falling into this sort of trap.

I am sorry that we did not have a longer mission time and richer mission-related activities. This is a student-lead organization and I don't call the shots (no one person does), but I ought to have taken the lessons of last year more to heart in the way that I advised the club. Just like last year, we got a lot done as mission time approached, but we underestimated just how much time each task would take. We need to figure out how to get ourselves into a more intense work mode earlier in the year. We ought to concentrate on making sure that existing systems and plans for mission activities and experiments are taken care of before we start developing new equipment ideas. Elizabeth's dad, who has extensive experience as a stage manager, has offered to help us make sure that we manage our time better next year. We need to make sure that not only do we start certain aspects of our preparation on time but that we stop them on time as well and go with what we have so that can get to work on the other things that need to get done closer to the mission date.

I hope that the mission debriefing and its ongoing discussion over the rest of the year result in our taking this year's lessons into account as we start getting ready for next year.

Chen-tao LaRochelle was a student at Lisgar Collegiate Institute and is a member of Spacesim. He joined during his eleventh grade year. He was Webmaster for the 2010-11 year.

Daedalus 2010
In a meeting to decide the name of the mission, Chen-tao suggested "Daedalus", having the starship F-304 Daedalus from the show Stargate: Atlantis in mind. After three rounds of voting, the name somehow survived and christened the mission. During the mission, Chen-tao participated in MC and occupied various functions, mainly LOGS. He also kept an HTML personal log available on C3-PO at 440. He was noted in the court-martial logs for having used important multimedia airwaves to presumably pass messages between Becca Kalinger and Christian Angel.

Callsign
Chen-tao's callsign was given by Maclean Rouble shortly after a trip to the hair cutter; as he walked in the Spacesim Office Maclean pointed out how he looked like a certain character in Stargate: SG1 named Jonas Quinn. Jonas is now Chen-tao's callsign. His Catclan name is, for some obscure reason, Spartakat.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/File:Max_Jeffcott_New_EVA.JPGFile:Max Jeffcott New EVA.JPG2019-05-31T21:57:43Z
JimMagwood:

Laura is the remote-controlled submersible designed and constructed for the 2009-10 mission Daedalus to Europa, Ganymede, and Io.

Design
Laura is approximately 35cm in length, with a main hull width of approximately 8cm and a maximum width (including propeller nacelles) of approximately 20cm. She has three engines, two for horizontal thrust and one for vertical movement. Her top cover is removable, to allow access to her power cell, engine test mechanism, radio emitter and receiver, and sonar equipment. There is additional space inside her main body for other mechanisms and equipment to be added to suit the purposes of the mission. Attached to her hull are four removable sample collectors.

Deployment
Laura was designed to be deployed on ice-covered planets such as Europa, and so her deployment capsule is fitted with an ice-boring capsule. This capsule uses heaters to melt a small tunnel through the ice, assisted by gravity, or, if gravity is insufficient, by treads. Once it reaches liquid water, the capsule hooks itself into the ice shelf, and remains there while Laura detaches.

Once separate from the capsule, Laura uses active and passive sonar to observe her surroundings, and transmits the information back to the capsule via radio signals. These signals are then relayed by the capsule to the Habitat via a tether cable. Likewise, control signals from the Habitat are sent through the tether to the capsule, which then transmits them to Laura using radio.

Deployment Capsule Redesign
Laura was to be used again in the Silver Seas 2018 and had to have a new deployment capsule made as the old one was nowhere to be found. The new capsule was planned to consist of a bucket which Laura went into, which was then attached to a pulley system held in place by a tripod. The pulley system would lower Laura as the drill at the bottom of the bucket drilled into the surface. Unfortunately, only the bucket portion could be finished in time for the mission that year, so further work would need to be finished after the mission.

Software
Laura is remote controlled from inside the Habitat, using software designed by Jim Magwood. This software allows the user (typically a Mission Specialist) to control the submersible's attitude, velocity, depth, and sample collectors by means of a rudder, dive planes, three propellers, and ballast loads. The software also gives the user a graphic display of Lauras passive sonar, active sonar, and fathmometer readings, as well as giving numerical data on water temperature, depth, and sonar contact distance.

Construction
Laura was contributed to by several members of OCESS, in an intermittent Task Force spearheaded by Mission Commander Maclean Rouble. Contributors included Jane MacLeod and Christian Angel. She is built primarily out of black PVC tubing, with clear plexiglass sides and lid. The sample collectors follow the design of syringes, and have matching sample storage containers aboard the Habitat in the form of narrow, clear plastic cylinders.

Additional Information
*Lauras name is a reference to the 2004 television series Galactica, which featured a specially-designed stealth spacecraft known as "Laura", named after the dying Colonial President, Laura Roslin, a primary character in the show.
*Laura is painted yellow, as a reference to the Beatles' song, "Yellow Submarine", which has been rewritten by OCESS members on many occasions and is a prominent part of Sim Lore.
*Laura arguably is an acronym which stands for "Lightweight Aquatic Underwater Reversible Appliance"
*Laura was sucked into a wormhole in the oceans of Europa during Drake-Sagan 2011 and was not encountered again during that mission. However, she managed to respawn in Keplernicus. This is the best evidence we have that Moogles can travel through wormholes.
*It is possible to operate Laura at nearly zero power cost by strategically filling and refilling her air bladder, although this is very slow. It is also possible to operate her at negligible cost by using only her fans, which is a common and well-regarded Laura strategy. There are rumours of an arcane art by which Laura can be driven faster and more agilely backwards than forwards, but this knowledge is thought to have been temporarily lost after the Laura-intensive mission in 2011
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Samuel_BaltzSamuel Baltz2019-05-31T21:55:11Z
JimMagwood:

Samuel Baltz was the 2010-11 Education Commander, and a Wikimaster for the latter half of 2009-10. When he assumed the position, the Mission Branch was the primary focus of the club while the Education Branch was a distant second, and he spent most of 2010-11 trying to promote education initiatives and make the club more interested in teaching and learning space science. His Wiki username is Darth Wombat.

Initiatives
Education Initiatives
In order to increase the role of the education branch, Baltz scheduled semi-regular planetarium training sessions, and led the first five EEPs training sessions since 2005-06. He also introduced the concept of an automated mission to the OCESS, as well as holding the first worksession in at least a decade devoted entirely to teaching people the rudimentary electronics of camera systems and computer networks, software, the hardware of computer networking, and drywalling. He also held two general physics explanations, devoting worksession time to various concepts in Newtonian physics from various high school curricula. He also spent two lunchtimes of the year explaining what categories of components are necessary, and what process must be followed, in order to design a functional satellite. Finally, and probably most successfully, he promoted the idea of a mission to Gliese 581, hoping that this would bring the reality and awe of extrasolar planets to the general attention of Spacesim members. While most of these initiatives met with limited success, and some of them met with no success at all, they are all viable ideas with serious potential to be explored by a vigorous Spacesim Executive team in the future.

PR Initiatives
Baltz devoted a large portion of his time in Spacesim to external affairs. During his tenure as Education Commander, he invited Dr. Iain Christie to Spacesim and gave him a tour, which resulted in the astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk coming to Sim during the mission. He was also the primary contact of the Ottawa Citizen reporter Matthew Pearson, giving him a tour of the habitat, resulting in an article that made the front page of that day's City Section, as well as a video online. As well, Baltz and then-External Affairs Subcommander Euan Wheaton visited School Council and gave them a 15 minute presentation on what Spacesim is and how it operates, in order to promote goodwill towards the organization among parents and the Lisgar administration.

Mission-Specific Positions
On 2009-10 Mission Daedalus Samuel Baltz served as Flight Director. Until 1 day before launch on this mission he was scheduled to serve as a simulator, having helped to build the Planetary Surface despite not being on the Planetary Surface Task Force, but was seemingly relieved of his duties for reasons that remain a secret. In 2010-11, he served as an astronaut on the mission, operating as Chief Engineer (and consequently the head chef) and the only Laura pilot. In the one and only robotic mission, which occurred in 2010-11, he served as Mission Control Commander, Chief Systems Engineer, and Project Founder. Unfortunately, the automated mission was never completed, as it was choked to death as a priority by the Occupational Health and Safety Episode of 2010.

Written Documents
Samuel Baltz was the first to write any proposals between Stefan's Proposal to Change the Hierarchy in 2005-06 and late 2009-10. This was less out of a desire to change things than it was because he thought that proposals were a normal thing when he joined in grade 11. Regardless, he found proposals to be extremely useful for commanders to gauge the opinions of the club, and strongly encouraged members to produce proposals throughout the 2010-11 school year. Accordingly, he has produced a long paper trail, including:
*Samuel's Proposal to Rejuvenate EEPs
*Samuel's Proposal for Training Missions
*Samuel's Mandate to Rejuvenate EEPs
*Samuel's Proposal to Regulate Commanders' Authority
*Samuel's and Arrian's ES1 Reprimands, which was written by him in an astronaut mission persona with extensive input by Arrian LeClaire.
*Samuel's Proposal for Automated Missions, which has yet to reach the wiki but is on the Spacesim Office computer network, and presented an abridged version to Spacesim.
*Samuel's Proposal for Robotic Missions, which also has yet to reach the wiki because he is a lazy slob.
*The Rouble-Baltz Manifesto for Commander Application, co-authored with Maclean Rouble in April 2015.
*the BIOCOM stats, logistics, and manual
*The Baltz Algorithmic Generator of Spectra (BAGS), during a visit to Silver Seas 2018
*Many, many, many paragraphs of Wiki Contributions.

Callsign
Samuel Baltz's current callsign is "Moogle". It was changed from "Finland" on February 20, 2010 by Lyra Evans and Maclean Rouble. Baltz resisted the change strongly, voicing the opinion that "Finland" was more dignified, but the two commanders co-issued an executive order, stating that they thought that his previous callsign was too boring. Despite voicing strong opposition to this callsign in 2009-10, Baltz never issued an executive order to change it back.

"Moogle" was derived after Crunch Time 2010 in preparation for Mission Daedalus, when Occupational Health and Safety questioned the cleanliness of the facilities and as a result an entire evening was spent cleaning. During this time Baltz spent several hours completely reorganising Keplernicus, which resulted in his knowing the exact location of every object belonging to Spacesim. His unerring accuracy in this department for days on end was a source of comic relief, and as a result he was first named "Keplernicus Boy", then the slightly more imaginative but less accurate "Keplernicus Girl", and finally "Moogle" after the infamous Copernicus Moogle.

His first callsign, "Finland", was derived approximately two minutes after the start of his first Work Session. It was assigned to him after a confusing chain of logic had been perpetuated by Euan Wheaton. In easy-to-read graphic format, complete with arrows, it is best summarized by:

Baltz ---> Baltic States ---> Nothing actually even remotely like a Baltic State ---> Finland

Samuel Baltz is still referred to as "Finland" in some official documents, such as attendance records, documents on Spacesim's network at Ottawa Tech, and the original copies of Samuel's Proposal to Rejuvenate EEPs.

UTSDC
The Hall of a Thousand Eyes is another name for the bathroom. The bathroom received this name before the 2008-09 mission when some of the members thought it would be a joke if some pictures of the Canadian Space Shuttle astronauts were pasted on the wall of the bathroom that would 'stare' at the astronauts, making them uncomfortable when in the bathroom. As the day went on the joke was changed - instead of one picture, one whole wall would be pasted with the pictures. This idea continued to be expanded upon. By the end of the night the whole bathroom was pasted floor to ceiling with the pictures. When counted accurately the total number eyes comes to 3420.
Fire hazard concerns
Concerns eventually came up over the fire hazard a room covered in glossed paper pictures constituted.
As those concerns arose, the "Hall Of A Thousand Eyes" faced the disturbing possibility of soon looking like a normal bathroom. The posters were to be removed before the mission to the dismay of OCESS members, and after clarifying the general dislike to Admiral Dr. Magwood and Mission Commander Maclean Rouble, the posters were to be allowed to stay up until after the 2009-10 mission. However, due to mounting complaints from the OCDSB, the posters were removed before the mission, ending the existence of the "Hall Of A Thousand Eyes".
Homage
A reference to the Hall of Thousand Eyes can be found in the 2010-11 Lisgar yearbook as part of the write-up for Spacesim. It is labeled as "Hall of Over 9000 Eyes". When asked why it was incorrectly writen, Education Commander Samuel Baltz said, "It sounds more interesting with a meme in it".
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/List_of_MembersList of Members2019-05-31T21:47:46Z
JimMagwood:

Hawking II Bunk Beds
Bunkbedgate
The bunk beds of the Hawking II were largely the work of Kevan Adlard, who built them out of materials recycled from the Wooden Habitat. Unfortunately, the bunk beds were structurally unsound, and broke on their first overnight test during the 2006-07 mission. The bottom fell out of the top bunk closest to the Interconnect with Stefan De Young falling through, largely unharmed, but substantially scratched. The following day, Cmdr. De Young and Nevin Hotson attempted to fix the bunk beds, but the bottom bunk on which they stood could not support both of their weights standing, and broke. While it is often claimed that either Cmdr. De Young or Mr. Hotson "jumped" on the bottom bunk, these allegations are unsubstantiated.

After the second bunk broke, Cmdr. De Young commissioned the creation of a repair-bot, who was constructed out of a pool noodle, air ducts, duct tape, an extension cord, and a circuit board. The longhouse cameras were deactivated, so as not to be damaged by the robot, and the robot was tasked with repairing the broken bunks, and verifying the integrity of the remaining four. Simulator Commander Kevan Adlard used the cover story of the repair bot to mask his entry into the Habitat, as he performed the robot's duties.
Curtains
For the 2009-10 year, Ian Martin, Euan Wheaton, Mikaela Stiver, and Morgan Mersereau installed curtains to give the astronauts some privacy between bunks and to allow them to sleep if any lights are on in the habitat.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/BIOCOMBIOCOM2019-05-31T21:39:36Z
JimMagwood:

Pic
BIOCOM is a program that monitors the physical and mental health of each astronaut. Ideally, three versions of BIOCOM exist; one for Mission Control and the Astronauts, and one for the simulators, the primary difference being that the simulator BIOCOM allows them to change the health statistics.
BIOCOM v.1.0
The first version of BIOCOM included injuries, sicknesses, radiation, and heart rate, among other things. The idea was first proposed in 2007-08. It was first coded for Lyra Evans and Peter Macdonald's Grade 11 Computers summative. It was not implemented during Mission Genesis, where it was to have been added to the suit of other monitoring software, such as ORBIT, EECOM and Engineering. The basic layout consisted of a Pivot-like stick figure for each astronaut with information regarding the state of their various joints and a number of statistics surrounding the image.

BIOCOM v.1.0 was scrapped in late 2009 when it was discovered that all the files on the 440 Albert network were corrupted.

BIOCOM v.2.0
The Mission Control and Astronaut version of BIOCOM v.2.0 was written in C++ on January 9, 2010 by Lyra Evans and Peter Macdonald with logistics determined by Samuel Baltz after a brief conference with Maclean Rouble and Dr. Jim Magwood. BIOCOM v.2.0 monitors the astronauts' State of Consciousness, State of Sleep, Hours Slept (total, over the course of the mission), Burn Levels, Radiation, Wounds, and Blood Pressure. BIOCOM v.2.0 can keep track of these stats for up to 8 astronauts, and is planned to include a picture of each astronaut. This version of BIOCOM is still being edited and is pending approval by Dr. Jim Magwood, but once it is complete and has passed his inspection it will replace BIOCOM v.1.0 as a commonly used program throughout Spacesim.

The version of BIOCOM v.2.0 for the simulators is still being planned.
Mission Genesis was by some accounts the first mission aboard the Hawking III as referenced by the name "Genesis".

Due to the construction of the new habitat earlier on during the year, critical systems were non-existent for the mission. Thus, most of the mission week was spent attempting to make the habitat launch capable. Due to the lack of systems and time, a very minimal planetary surface was in place.

The Spacesim Dodgeball Team was a group of Spacesim members who formed a dodgeball team in 2008-09 when a dodgeball tournament was organized by Students' Council. The members were Ben Paul, Daisy Wong, Maclean Rouble, Lyra Evans, Dan Anderson, Adrienne Mills, Euan Wheaton, Morgan Mersereau, and Ian Martin.

Accomplishments
Spacesim showed up for its first game pumped, but proceeded to lose (perhaps to the absence of Ben, who did not know all members had to attend every game). The next day, they forfeited, Maclean not knowing they were playing. Then, the following day, they almost won a game, as the opposing team did not have the requisite two grade nines and two girls. However, the opponents managed to locate their missing team members, and thus did not forfeit. Additionally, they completely owned Spacesim. Spacesim then forgot to come to any more of their scheduled battles.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/2008-092008-092019-05-31T21:34:38Z
JimMagwood:

The 2008 Mission to Mars, or Mission Red Dawn, was the first mission run using the Engineering Closet and the new, smaller Hotlab. Other changes for this mission included:
* A new version of the Orbit software implementing solid rocket boosters (SRBs) for terrestrial liftoff and a reusable parachute for atmospheric reentry.
* A new, more comfortable EVA suit.

Red Dawn was also the final mission in the Hawking II.
* Daisy Wong (Medic)
* Maclean Rouble (Co-Pilot)
* Matthew Farkas-Dyck (Engineer)
* Ben Paul (Communications Specialist)

Experiments
Experiments were performed on the following subjects:
* effects of fatigue on mental ability
* effects of music on mental ability and heart rate
* effects of distracting stimuli on mental ability
* effects of longterm exposure to the Martian environment on the Viking I lander

Additionally, due to the emergency situation of the loss of 30% of the Habitat's water stores, an attempt was made to build a Sabatier reactor to produce additional water using the Martian atmosphere. This experiment was a partial success, as water was produced but could not be retrieved due to extreme weather conditions.

Notable Events
* CJOH showed up without RSVPing several hours before launch, and some of the preparations were featured in a news segment on 26 February.
* Launch was only two hours behind schedule, which is believed to be a record for recent OCESS missions.
* All power to the main engines was briefly lost during the initial insertion to Earth orbit; however, the auxiliary power bus functioned properly, and a safe orbit was achieved.
* A total of five scheduled EVAs were performed, as well as several additional EVAs to repair damage and set up the Sabatier reactor.
* A powerful storm on the last night briefly incapacitated Cdr Hotson and Lt Rouble while they were on EVA to collect the water produced by the Sabatier reactor; however, Lt Cdr Xing was able to retrieve them safely.
* Landing at the OCESS facilities in Ottawa was at approximately 1415 EST; initial reentry was over Chicago, which was judged not to be an optimal landing site.

The University of Toronto Space Design Contest (UTSDC) is a competition hosted by a group of volunteers at the University of Toronto. Its purpose is to challenge teams of up to five to design a space-related system such as a lunar base or space station. The competition is adjudicated in two categories: Junior (Gr. 7-10) and Senior (Gr. 11-12), and winning submissions are added to the UTSDC-verse, which is a fictionalised extension of reality beginning in 2050 and continuing with the construction of the facilities proposed in aforementioned winning submissions.

The OCESS has participated three and a half times in the UTSDC and its various teams have won such awards as second and third places as well as best technical report. This participation is one of the factors that led the University of Toronto to sponsor the Galileo Challenge.

UTSDC veterans have frequently expressed the opinion that Spacesim should always participate in the contest even when they do not feel they have a chance of winning, because it is an incredible networking and educational opportunity. The contest has incredible access to actual researchers in the space science field, including tours of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies as well as a huge multitude of brilliant guest speakers. In 2009-10 at UTSDC, Lyra Evans got to drive a lunar rover that was 4,000 km away, while Samuel Baltz would have had he realized that metres were not the same thing as kilometres.

Point Five
In 2005-06 Mission Commanders Stephen Smith and Crystal Xiao attempted several times to form a UTSDC team, but ultimately failed to recruit any interested members. They did send away to the competition, however, voicing their hope that the OCESS might be permitted to participate in the future and expressing their desire, as student-led space-oriented organizations, to work together in some form in the future. The UTSDC responded by sending a letter expressing similar sentiments as well as a box of competition T-shirts.

In 2006-07 the OCESS UTSDC team led by then Mission Commander Brian Foo won second place overall. Their space-hotel, Endeavor, was also selected as the best technical report of the competition.

While in Toronto, team members enjoyed a tour of the university and its affiliated aerospace engineering facilities (UTIAS). They were then fortunate to be treated to an additional tour of the UTIAS space flight laboratory by spacesim alumnus and former Mission Commander Daniel Kekez, who is currently employed at UTIAS.

The 2007 team members were Brian Foo, Stefan De Young, Alex Foo, Jonathan Scothorn, and Guangye Cao.

Networking
After the 2007 team's success, then EEP Commander Jeff Gao used the access to the University of Toronto gained by his fellow spacesim members in order to negotiate a partnership with the University to ensure province-wide distribution of the Galileo Challenge.

2008 Contest
In 2008 the OCESS assembled a team to compete in the Senior category. The members of the 2008 team were Anthony Xing, Ben Paul, Daisy Wong, Maclean Rouble, and Arthur Quang. Their task was to design an Emergency Response System for the fledgling space infrastructure currently in existence in the fictional time line that all UTSDC projects follow. The competition was held on May 15-18, where the OCESS team gained third place. Mr. Paul, unfortunately, was unable to attend.

2009 Contest
In 2009 OCESS again competed in the Senior challenge, this year to create a training facility for young astronauts. Although Daisy Wong, Maclean Rouble, Ben Paul and Matt Farkas-Dyck contributed a fine project, they did not gain a prize, perhaps due to organizational issues caused by Maclean's absence in Belgium for the months preceding the report due date.

2010 Contest
In 2010 OCESS once again competed in the Senior challenge, this year with two separate teams. The first team consisted of Maclean Rouble, Ben Paul, Ian Martin and Amalissa Hum, while the second team consisted of Lyra Evans, Samuel Baltz, Rutger Theodoor Ronald Jansen van Doorn Campbell, Peter Macdonald, and Yvonne Ho. The challenge was to protect the Earth from an incoming Near Earth Object, without any form of explosives. Neither team placed, due to their individual extraordinary lack of organization. The first team handed in their proposal a month after the deadline after receiving an extension due to Matthew Farkas-Dyck leaving the team at the last minute and UTSDC not sending all the information. The second team's proposal was written entirely by Samuel Baltz and Lyra Evans, who also required two extensions. The late proposals automatically ruled the teams out of consideration because they missed the proposals judging contest; this is a valuable lesson for future years.
JimMagwoodhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/2007-082007-082019-05-31T21:28:53Z
JimMagwood:

Mission Red Dawn was carried out in 2008.

In the spring, Spacesim was temporarily prevented from using the facilities due to fire hazards. Spacesim remained in limbo until 2008-09, when the club was forced to move rooms, allowing the old room to be used for the growing masonry department at 440 Albert.

The pilot is the member of the astronaut crew responsible for piloting the Habitat. Since this task is extremely important, and difficult to learn, the pilot occupies a place of utmost importance in the flight crew.

Currently, pilots uses the Orbit software to perform the various duties associated with navigating the habitat. Because being a successful pilot often means great familiarity with the said program, pilots often are very well acquainted with the other software involved in the simulation as well. Due to training needs, pilots can often fly the entire Habitat systems, including the engineering software and the EECOM software, provided that simulated disasters do not strike the three software at the same time. The role of GUIDO in MC is closely associated with the job of the pilot, and MC personnel assigned to GUIDO often go through similar trainings. Another side effect of this is manifested in the fact that capable pilots tend to be dedicated and involved members of Spacesim, and often becoming the second in the command chain on board any given mission, assuming that they are not the first.

Training
Since pilot training is not an immediately interesting activity, as well as the extra effort that is needed to master this art as compared to the art of destroying the habitat, most members are not capable of flying as pilot, and the population of capable pilots at any given time has always tended to be low. However, the situation is changing as the Mission Commander and designated pilot Maclean Rouble also happens to be an avid pilot instructor.

History
Historically, the shuttle would also have a pilot; This would require Alpha driving skills.

The 2010 Mission to Io, Ganymede and Europa, or Mission Daedalus, was the first mission in the Hawking III, with the exception of the brief Genesis. The name was voted on by an assembly of members during a meeting; it was proposed by Chen-tao LaRochelle.
Mission Purpose
On Io, the astronauts were to collect samples of volcanic dust ejected by tectonic activity on the moon's surface for analysis. They were to land on Ganymede to set up Terraforming equipment, and on Europa to deploy an unmanned submersible in Europa's liquid water ocean to explore it and its rocky planetary core. One of the mission's driving thesis was of there having life on Europa.

Spacesim is, by nature, an extremely expensive club to run. Everything including EEP supplies to materials to repairing the habitat costs money.

In the past, Spacesim had a number of sponsors including
*BOC Gases
*Nortel
*Lockheed Martin
*Spar Aerospace
*Carleton University

In addition, the OCDSB also provided Spacesim with signifigant funding. However, many of these sponsors have ceased to provide financial support for Spacesim, BOC Gases being the last remaining corperate sponsor, and provider of Liquid nitrogen. Thus, Spacesim has been forced to cut back on spending and rely more on personal donations.

It is the job of the newly-created External Affairs Subcommander (EAC) position, previously PR Director, to find sponsors, and the members of Spacesim are hopeful that the EAC will be able to provide them with some new sponsors within the year. Recently Arrian Amir-Rafiei and Maclean Rouble started working on a Sponsorship Proposal which is as of August 2010 unfinished.

Current Sponsors
Currently, an unofficial sponsorship is held between Spacesim and Rogers TV Ottawa, who have donated many pieces of equipment to further the technical capabilities of the club. This has included things such as video routing equipment, cable, and computers.
