'''Mission Magellan 2014''' was a mission to the nearest star system, the Centauri star system. This mission was the first mission to conventionally exit the Sol system. For the previous mission to exit the Sol system, see [[Drake-Sagan 2011]]. The [[Magellan 2014 Logs]] are available on the wiki.

==Astronauts==
* [[Patrick Melanson]] ([[Habitat Commander]])
* [[Alex Mersereau]] ([[Habitat Sub-Commander]])
* [[Spencer Whitehead]] ([[Chief Engineer]])
* [[Wade Theriault]] ([[Pilot]])
* [[Nathan Kelly]] ([[Medic]] [[Laura|LAURA pilot]])
* [[Maxim Billig]] ([[Able Crewman]])

==Mission Purpose==
With new advances in long-term hibernation, it was made possible to travel conventionally to very nearby star systems. For this reason, OCESS sent a scientific expedition to the Alpha Centauri system using the AYSE drive and the Hawking III, crewed by six astronauts. Long-term scientific experiments were set up, as described in the following section on Scientific Experiments.

==Scientific Experiments==
Many scientific observations were taken by the habitat during the mission, especially when landed on [[Alpha Centauri Aa]]. Listed are some of these experiments.

* A low orbit probe was inserted into orbit around [[Alpha Centauri Bb]]. [[Alpha Centauri Bb]] was the first planet that was observed in the Alpha Centauri system from Earth. However, due to the planet's extremely close proximity to its parent star, the orbit of the satellite was very unstable in the long term. Additionally, transmission from this satellite would also be hard to separate from the huge background of the star's emissions. No analysis was performed on this data during the mission week.

* Infrared photography was taken of all five planets in the Alpha Centauri system. Because of this, it was determined that [[Alpha Centauri Aa]] was the only planet with an astmosphere, since the temperature of the surface did not change suddenly at the terminator. Because of this observation, it was decided that the Hawking III would land on this planet.

* A radar scan was performed on [[Alpha Centauri Aa]]. From this, it was determined that the planet was completely covered in water, except for a single, small, solid landing site at coordinates of approximately 0,0.

* An atmospheric probe was sent into Alpha Centauri Aa's atmosphere to determine the composition, pressure, and atmosphere. From this data, it was determined that Alpha Centauri Aa's oceans contained sulphuric acid and water, while its atmosphere contained sulphuric acid, water, and oxygen.

* A seismic probe was sent in a sub-orbital trajectory into Alpha Centauri Aa's surface to determine whether the surface was solid or an ocean. The accelerometer data showed an periodical oscillation in the acceleration of the probe, the magnitude of which decreased exponentially with time. From this, it was determined that the probe landed in a liquid ocean. Coupled with the radar scan, it was concluded that the surface of the planet was almost completely liquid.

* [[Laura]] was placed in the planet's oceans as part of an EVA to determine the composition of the ocean and search for any anomalies. However, by the point in the mission at which this experiment was conducted, it was very likely that active, complex life existed in respectable concentrations near the landing site. Because of this, MC said for the active sonar to not be activated until further notice, as it might scare off (or worse, attract) life. However, the LAURA pilot at the time activated active sonar without officer permission. The exact results of this were not recorded, but the pilot noted that background noise decreased by 50% and more anomalies were detected. Interestingly, these anomalies began to accelerate away from LAURA. The only reasonable (sentient rocks are not reasonable, as they fear nothing) explanation for this is that the additional anomalies were life forms, since they reacted to stimuli and moved independently of everything else. Additionally, samples were also collected by LAURA, and LAURA was later retrieved. Analysis on these samples has not been performed as of the end of the mission week.
Arrian is a current member of [[OCESS]]. He joined in [[2008-09]] as a grade nine and has been an astronaut on one mission, he has been a simulator in 2008-09 and was in MC as a mission specialist during the [[2009-10]] mission. In [[2010-11]], Arrian was the [[Tech Director]], and the only grade eleven in the [[Hierarchy]].Arrian Also participated as an Astronaut on the main mission. For the current [[2011-12]] school year, Arrian is the [[Mission Commander]].

==Background==
Arrian was born in Ottawa in 1994 and attended Kindergarten to Grade 5 at Manor Park Public School he then attended his first years in the "Gifted Program" (Grades 6 through 8) at Hawthorne Public school. He now attends [[Lisgar Collegiate Institute]] and plans to finish Grade 12 there.

==Time in OCESS==

===Grade Nine===
Since joining OCESS, Arrian has spent a great deal of time helping out starting with the moving from the old room in [[440 Albert]] to the new room. Arrian helped out with the sifting through the old computers taking valuable parts from old ones and doing his duty as a PC Gamer to rid the Earth of Apple Computers starting with one at OCESS which was brutally abused by a Hammer to the dismay of [[Admiral]] Magwood. Arrian also helped out with the general packing up of the old room and the moving to the new room. Arrian was their to see the old room dustless as well as the new room dustless. Once the new [[habitat]] was setup Arrian helped out with the installation of computers, and thus over the year became more proficient in the repair of computers. For the mission of 2008-09 Arrian participated as a [[simulator]] although due to the lack of people in [[MC]] he ended up running MC more then doing duties as a Simulator. During the mission Arrian also created one of the most memorable moments in the mission, the "Circles Don't Turn Moment" in which Arrian looked at Telemetry to see what appeared to be the habitat turning inside of [[AYSE Drive|AYSE]] and used [[CAPCOM]] to scold the astros, but it ended up backfiring as it turned out the habitat was attached to AYSE. If one looks to the Official and UnOfficial logs of [[Genesis 2009]] one will find many references made to this event by [[Ian Martin]]. Arrian also created the [[Tapekachu]] During exam time.As the school year came to a close, Arrian's marks in English were falling, and this is the main contributing factor to why Arrian has been absent at so many Worksessions.

===Grade Ten===

In grade ten although Arrian missed many, many worksessions, he still worked hard on the home front, helping out with the Spacesim [[week of hype]] and trying [[Image:RCA_Video_Switch.jpg|left|thumb|200px|The RCA video switch]] [[Wiki Task Force]] hard to benefit how ever he could. he remained a part of the and continued to work on the wiki through the year. As the second semester of school came up, Arrian started helping out more by helping out with the all important "General Application For Sponsorship" and making up the "Network Video Interface Proposal".
For the 2009-2010 mission, Arrian will be participating as a "Mission Specialist" or a person who is the subordinate of the [[Flight Director]]. Leading up to, and during the mission, Arrian worked on the video task force. One of the many things he did in this task force was design and build a switch to attach the multiple video feeds to one television on the [[Simulator Loft]]. Arrian also acted as [[Habitat Commander]] on a training mission when all commanders were in Toronto for [[UTSDC]]. Arrian is currently working on convincing his parents that Spacesim isn't a waste of time.

===Grade Eleven===

In his Grade Eleven year, Arrian is the first Tech Director in the new hierarchy. Arrian is also the certified Pilot, Engineering, and EECOM trainer. As per the training, Arrian hopes to have a training manual for orbit done by the end of the school year.

==Proposals==

Arrian has thus far created 1 proposal:

*[[Arrian's Proposal to Rejuvenate Spacesim.org]]
==Callsign==
Arrian's current callsign is "FANCY" in reference to his fanciful piloting skills during mission [[Dragan 2011]] and for his particularly interesting way of saying the word fancy.

==Life Outside Sim==
Outside of Spacesim, Arrian lives a simple life of Procrastination, PC Gaming, and drinking obscene amounts of Cola. Arrian also enjoys assorted Hacking, tweaking, and watching television. Arrian is also obsessed with tape, and thus has a roll of tape on him at all time for quick fixes. When Arrian is not doing this he is usually helping his stepfather out with assorted chores.

==Background==

==Time in OCESS==

===Grade Nine===

===Grade Ten===

===Grade Eleven===

In his Grade Eleven year, Arrian is the first Tech Director in the new hierarchy. Arrian is also the certified Pilot, Engineering, and EECOM trainer. As per the training, Arrian hopes to have a training manual for orbit done by the end of the school year.

==Proposals==

Arrian has thus far created 1 proposal:

*[[Arrian's Proposal to Rejuvenate Spacesim.org]]
==Callsign==
Arrian's current callsign is "FANCY" in reference to his fanciful piloting skills during mission [[Dragan 2011]] and for his particularly interesting way of saying the word fancy.

==Life Outside Sim==
[[Image:HAB.JPG|thumb|right|400px|The [[Hawking III]]]]
The '''Habitat''' is a space simulation facility. Its primary purpose is to simulate the living and working environment of
the [[OCESS]] [[Astronauts]] while they execute the [[mission]]. There have been three Habitats.

The Habitat is often referred to simply as 'The Hab'.

==The Hawking==
The original Habitat was called ''The Hawking'', named after famous physicist [http://www.en.wikipedia.org/Steven_Hawking Steven Hawking].
[[image:Hawkdock.jpg|frame|The Hawking, as depicted in Space]]
The original Habitat was first built in the Early '90s, and was designed to be collapsible. It constituted three primary rooms: the [[Interlock]], the bathroom and the [[Longhouse]]. The original Interlock was made from Wooden Walls, hinged together so that they could fold up, while the Longhouse was a half-cylinder, framed with curved piping, and having a canvas overlaid on top. Additionally, the Habitat had an [[Airlock]].

The Habitat was set up in school gyms for at least one mission before it found its long-term home at the [[440 Albert Street Administrative Centre|old Ottawa Technical High School]]. In the late '90s, [[OCESS]] moved to the [[Media Centre|Bronson Street Media Centre]] as the [[OCDSB|School Board]] was going to shut down the Ottawa Technical High School. The Habitat moved with Spacesim, but the old Airlock would not fit into the limited space. A new, crawl-through airlock was built for this facility.

==Why the Habitat was Forced to Change==
Spacesim continued undisturbed at the Media Centre until the Spring of [[2000-01|2001]]. During this year, the Board decided to reclaim the Media Centre, and discourage Spacesim from continuing. One method of discouragement was random fire inspections. The Board successfully deemed the Old Habitat a Fire Hazard, despite the fact that a mission commander attempted to light the canvas on fire with a lighter in front of him. The [[OCESS]] managed to reclaim its old space at the Old Ottawa Technical High School, now known as the [[440 Albert Street Administrative Centre]], but at the cost of constructing a new Habitat to meet Board specifications.

The New Habitat would require to meet all building and safety codes, have official blueprints, and moreover have these blueprints stamped by a Professional Engineer. Additionally electrical work had to be approved by a certified electrician.

==The Hawking II==
The Hawking II was referred to as ''The New Habitat'' during construction, shortly thereafter named ''The Hawking II'', and finally officially named ''The Brahe'' during [[2002-03]]. Since then, this name does not appear to have stuck, and it is simply called ''The Hab''.

The Hawking II was designed by [[Alex Ghosh]], [[Ross Green]], and [[Nikolas Zuchowicz]], with strong influences from [[David Owen]], who was then a recent alumnus. It was originally designed to be modular, with each room receiving its power through the Interlock, effectively "plugging in", so that the modules could be arranged in any orientation. The Interlock was designed to handle five sub-modules, and was supposed to have power and access doors for that many. Unfortunately, due to space constraints and electrical concerns, such a configuration became unfeasible, and the Habitat was locked into its current setup and hardwired.

The [http://www.spacesim.org/OCESS%20Habitat%20Plans.exe Original Plans] called for an [[Interlock]], [[Hotlab]], [[Bathroom]], [[Longhouse]], and [[Airlock]]. Construction took place during the Fall of 2001 and the Winter of 2002. The [[Longhouse]] was the first module to be finished, and was used for that year's [[Mission Alpha]]. The Hotlab was not constructed in time for The new Habitat's first mission, and instead was constructed during the 2002-2003 year.

Originally envisioned as having an aluminum sheet-metal structure, drywall was selected as the material of choice for cost and safety concerns. The Drywall was easier and cheaper to repair, completely immune to fire and emergency exits could be created anywhere as required.

==The Hawking III==

''Main article: [[Hawking III]]''

The Hawking III is the third Hab built in the Hawking series and was constructed as a result of OCESS moving to a new room. The Hawking III is smaller than the previous Hab, and is roughly square in shape. In addition to having a smaller footprint, its ceiling is significantly lower than that of the previous Hab, costing the astronauts valuable storage space while giving the interior a cramped feel and making the new Hab a more realistic approximation of space travel. The Hawking III is the first Hab to be constructed by professionals contracted by the [[OCDSB]]. The Hawking III was built and completed during the 2008-2009 school year, and was first used for the 2009 [[mission]], [[Genesis 2009]].

It is built mostly of drywall panels and metal studs, with one of the rooms ([[Control Room]]) being panelled in plywood. It is double-layered, with an inner and outer panel of either drywall or plywood and an internal space of approximately four inches --- the depth of a 2x4 plank.

==Rooms==
In ''The Hawking'' the [[Interlock]] served as living space and command centre for the Astronauts, containing their kitchen and control units. Additionally, the [[Airlock]] was off of the [[Interlock]]. The [[Longhouse]] was primarily used as a Laboratory, but was often used for sleeping space. The Longhouse connected the [[Bathroom]] to the [[Interlock]].

Within the ''The Hawking II'', the [[Longhouse]] was dedicated solely to living space, while the scientific aspects have been split into a new [[Hotlab]]. Originally planned to be the Hotlab, the room connecting Interlock and Longhouse became the [[Bathroom]]. The new Hotlab was closer to the [[Planetary Surface]] allowing samples to be easily passed within. The only evidence of the old Hotlab within the Bathroom is some structural reinforcement around the location where a docking port for Robbie was supposed to go. In [[2007-08]], the Hotlab, considered to be too big, was taken down, and construction on a smaller Hotlab began; this was only used on Mission [[Red Dawn 2008]] because soon after Spacesim had to move to a different room.

In ''The Hawking III'', the Interlock of habitats past split into two separate rooms: the [[Control Room]], the command centre, and the [[Interlock]], now the kitchen and communal area. The [[Hotlab]] was thankfully granted more room than before. Other rooms include the [[Engineering Closet]], which is the [[Beta]] brains of the habitat, the [[Longhouse]], which is the living quarters of the [[Astronauts]], the [[Bathroom]], and the [[Airlock]].

==Environmental Simulation==
The Habitat was simulated using software known as [[CMES]]. It keeps track of the temperature and pressure of all rooms, as well as the status on the doors and airlocks (open/closed). It now uses a different combination of programs developed by Dr. [[Jim Magwood]] to accomplish the same function. Most notable among these is [[EECOM]] for environmental and door monitoring.

The Habitat can be observed by [[Mission Control]] through a series of cameras, as well as an extension of the Simulation Software.

==Electrical System==
The Habitat receives its power through the [[Interlock]]. There is a small power cabinet on the back wall.

==Simulation Habitat==
Within the confines of the simulation, the habitat is a large structure. It is made of laminated aluminum and foam to absorb radiation and meteor impacts. This description is not to be mistaken for reality, as the Hab is actually constructed of metal studs and drywall.

==Cameras==
'''Hawking I''': Not much is known about the camera structure.

'''Hawking II''': The Cameras were run off a dedicated system designed to run the Corel Camera systems. The Computer designated to preform this vital task was named Stonehenge, with the monitor being the Eye of Stonehenge. In the Hawking II the entire habitat was viewable from any TV, and there were four televisions wired into this network. Stonehenge was located in Mission Control giving it complete control over which camera feed was displayed on any monitor. The Astronauts were assigned two Televisions, one in the Longhouse (Doyle) and one in the Interlock. MC had two. The Simulators used an entirely separate camera system based off light switches in the [[Simulator Area]].

'''Hawking III''':

The camera system has gone through a new variation every year since the original implementation in the Hawking III:

2009-2011: The camera system is a complex system which can be modified as needed. Unlike the camera system in the Hawking II, each camera operates independently, as the Corel Cam server stopped working after the move to room W027. Each camera connects to a [[:Image:RCA_Video_Switch.jpg|switching system]] on the [[Simulator Loft]]. The televisions in MC are connected either directly to the camera through a splitter, or connected to the switching system. There are four [[Non-Computer Named Objects#Televisions|televisions]] in Mission Control one to each of Longhouse and Interlock and two to [[C&C]].

2011-12: The current camera system is a system that has 8 camera rails that connect two MC cameras and 6 infrared Habitat cameras. The system allows multiple branches off the boards. The simulators get all 8 feeds which splits off the six Habitat feeds to VCRS for signal boosting and recording. These six than go to MC. The Habitat feeds have simulator switches connected to them and run through the ceiling into the CNC alpha system patch box for camera repairs. This than goes back through the ceiling to the Habitat termination board which splits off to the 4 TVs giving them all the necessary feeds.

==Voice Communication==

===Hawking I===
Not much is known about communications in the original Hawking. However, it is presumed that all voice communication was done by radio.

===Hawking II===
The Hawking II used a mixture of radio headsets and wired telephones to communicate with MC and [[Astronauts]] on [[EVA]]'s or [[IVA]]'s. A telephone in [[Mission Control]] next to the server tower and Video Control monitor was wired in parallel with a telephone in the [[Interlock]] of the [[Habitat]], and the power source was located in Mission Control. The telephones were used for normal communication with the Habitat, as the radio headsets were often unreliable. The exception was a tranceiver powered by Harolde, which was wired into the Mission Control speaker system allowing everyone in Mission Control to hear all radio chatter.

===Hawking III===
The first system voice communication system in the Hawking III was designed in [[2008-09]] and used a single phone in [[MC]] and a single phone in the habitat's [[Control Room]]. Buzzers were used to simulate a telephone ringer. This system was quite archaic and meant that the astronauts couldn't communicate with each other if on [[EVA]]'s, [[IVA]]'s or if rooms lost pressure splitting up the Astronauts. For the [[2009-10]] mission [[Stefan De Young]], [[Matt Farkas-Dyck]], and [[Chris Hawthorne]] designed a system with 6 phones; 1 in each room of the habitat excluding the [[Bathroom]] and [[Engineering Closet]], and one in [[MC]]. Two circuits exist, which allow two conversations to occur simultaneously. Each phone in the Habitat can switch between either circuit, but the Mission Control phone is limited to a single Comm circuit. Currently, only the old buzzer system that exists between MC and [[C&C]] exists. There are currently no plans to expand this to the other rooms in the Habitat.
The '''2008 Mission to Mars''', or '''Mission Red Dawn''', was the first [[mission]] run using the [[Engineering Closet]] and the new, smaller [[Hotlab]]. Other changes for this mission included:
* A new version of the [[Orbit]] software implementing solid rocket boosters (SRBs) for terrestrial liftoff and a reusable parachute for atmospheric reentry.
* A new, more comfortable [[EVA suit]].

Red Dawn was also the final mission in the Hawking II.
* [[Daisy Wong]] ([[Medic]])
* [[Maclean Rouble]] ([[Co-Pilot]])
* [[Matthew Farkas-Dyck]] ([[Engineer]])
* [[Ben Paul]] ([[Communications Specialist]])

==Experiments==
Experiments were performed on the following subjects:
* effects of fatigue on mental ability
* effects of music on mental ability and heart rate
* effects of distracting stimuli on mental ability
* effects of longterm exposure to the Martian environment on the Viking I lander

Additionally, due to the emergency situation of the loss of 30% of the [[Habitat]]'s water stores, an attempt was made to build a Sabatier reactor to produce additional water using the Martian atmosphere. This experiment was a partial success, as water was produced but could not be retrieved due to extreme weather conditions.

==Notable Events==
* CJOH showed up without RSVPing several hours before launch, and some of the preparations were featured in a news segment on 26 February.
* Launch was only two hours behind schedule, which is believed to be a record for recent OCESS missions.
* All power to the main engines was briefly lost during the initial insertion to Earth orbit; however, the auxiliary power bus functioned properly, and a safe orbit was achieved.
* A total of five scheduled EVAs were performed, as well as several additional EVAs to repair damage and set up the Sabatier reactor.
* A powerful storm on the last night briefly incapacitated Cdr Hotson and Lt Rouble while they were on EVA to collect the water produced by the Sabatier reactor; however, Lt Cdr Xing was able to retrieve them safely.
* Landing at the OCESS facilities in Ottawa was at approximately 1415 EST; initial reentry was over Chicago, which was judged not to be an optimal landing site.
Mission Genesis was by some accounts the first mission aboard the [[Hawking III]] as referenced by the name "Genesis".

Due to the construction of the new [[habitat]] earlier on during the year, critical systems were non-existent for the mission. Thus, most of the mission week was spent attempting to make the habitat launch capable. Due to the lack of systems and time, a very minimal [[planetary surface]] was in place.
[[image:Xompar.png|thumb|250px|Xompar, as drawn to christen the bunk]]
'''Ian's Bunk''' is the bunk in the [[Hawking III]] that Ian Martin first used on the [[2008-09]] mission (thus the first one to use said bunk) and used again on the [[2010-11]] mission. Its name is debated, mostly by Ian himself. It was originally named Xompar, after an alien character that he created sometime in Grade 9. He phased out the character gradually, so it made less and less sense to keep calling the bunk that. Eventually he created Andy the Communist Goblin, and decided to rename the bunk Andy. While not an alien, Andy was a communist, and that was a popular topic of discussion among its members.
IronyFailhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/2010-112010-112011-09-29T01:35:03Z
IronyFail:

'''2010-11''' is the previous school year

==Firsts==
* The first year of the new [[Administration|hierarchy]] proposed in the [[2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy]].
* The first year of conduits/in-[[habitat]] patch panel. This was the result of a complete revamp of the [[Alpha]] Systems. Although it was prompted by the [[School Board]] and consumed the first semester of [[worksessions]], it resulted in an entire network of conduits and tracks, as well as the installation in [[Command and Control]] of a large patch panel. This allows the [[astronauts]] to actively replace parts of the network or phones by switching cables or switching the ports used (which of course must be accompanied by a corresponding switch on the other end, leading to an increased necessity for communication in the solving of [[Beta]] problems), and it means a better and more organised system with more fail-safes.
* Training is planned to be revamped, with proper [[Task Force]] leaders constantly in charge of training members in various stations.
* EEPs are planned to be brought back for the first time since [[2005-06]].
* Training Missions are planned to be revamped; instead of semi-regular training missions, workshops will be held as they were a decade ago and longer. Members will sign up or be selected for a [[work session]]-long workshop on certain tasks necessary for Spacesim.
* The first [[Automated Mission]] was launched in this year.
* The first [[educational seminars]] were held in recent history.
* The first mission to a location outside our solar system.
* The first [[workshops]] at a work session since at least [[1999-00|10 years before]] (the only remaining knowledge of workshops comes from a hand-scrawled note, in a color of ink and a style of handwriting [blue, large cursive] similar to that of the venerable [[Milary]], found in [[Keplernicus]]. Because of this it is theorized that the [[OCESS]] had no training worksessions for at least [[1994-95|15 years before]] the one on February 4, 2011).
I asked Dr. Magwood exactly where to find the pipes and I was pointed to the copper pipes on the roof. If these aren't the exact pipes on the roof, I have more pictures, but I'm pretty sure those were the magpipes he was talking about, albeit being used a piping.

==Old Facilities==

The '''Simulator Staircase''' is the staircase up to street level located at the west side of Spacesim's previous [[440 Albert Street]] facilities. Its name comes from its use by [[Simulators]] to enter their work area without being seen by [[Mission Control]] staff during the [[Mission]]. The space underneath was used as the [[Junkyard]] due to its low height rendering it useless for active purposes. It was also referred to as the Graveyard because of the large number of non-functional monitors stored there.

==New Facilites==

The term "Simulator Staircase", in the context of the [[New Facilities]], describes the staircase leading to the [[Simulator Balcony]].
IronyFailhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/MagpipesMagpipes2011-09-27T03:18:28Z
IronyFail: Removed picture. Those aren't magpipes. You'll know when they are magpipes.

The '''Magpipes''' are a series of tubes and funnels, going from 20 centimetres to several metres long, that [[Dr. Magwood]] can use expertly to create a range of musical tones.
The tubes are made of various materials, with most being copper, steel, or plastic. The first recorded use of the Magpipes was at a [[work session]] in [[2006-07]]. [[Olivia Frank]] has been known to have an affinity for the Magpipes.

The term "Simulator Staircase", in the context of the [[New Facilities]], describes the staircase leading to the [[Simulator Balcony]].
IronyFailhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Samuel%27s_and_Arrian%27s_ES1_ReprimandsSamuel's and Arrian's ES1 Reprimands2011-09-21T02:09:28Z
IronyFail: Reformated The Baltz' Comment

'''Samuel's and Arrian's ES1 Reprimands''' is an in-[[Beta]] document drafted during [[Dragan 2011]] that chronicles the culmination of [[Earth Station 1]]'s eclipsing of [[Mission Control]] during that mission. Written by the Beta Universe personas of [[Samuel Baltz|Lt. Baltz]] and [[Arrian Amir-Rafiei|Lt. LeClaire]], it details an episode in which all six [[astronauts]] were effectively forced to choose between their own [[Alpha]] well-being and [[Mission Integrity]] for an extended period, and was written aboard the [[habitat]] and released here in an effort to warn against similar occurrences in the future. It is heavily biased towards the perspective of the astronauts on that mission, who seek not to blame any [[simulators]] involved but to prevent the endangering of future missions by the current balance of [[Mission-Specific]] power.
Mission Dragan 2011 Official Habitat Reprimands for ES1

Habitat Logs

Direct any questions to co-authors Lt. Samuel Baltz, Education Commander, Ship Engineer, and LAURA Pilot, and Lt. Arrian LeClaire, Director of Technology and Engineering, Ship Co-Pilot, and Network Engineer

At 2319 the software intra-hab and inter-hab and MC ceased to function. As unofficial network engineer, Arrian plugged in the t100 network drop to the server that he had previously equipped the habitat with Admiral Doctor Magwood's permission, in less than one minute diagnosed the problem, which was “CASSINI” malfunctioning, removed “CASSINI” from the network, and we all observed the network re-synch. MC confirmed that all the software was synching. This occurred during docking with AYSE, so we proceeded as normal and started to establish an orbit around Jupiter. At 23:22, acting CAPCOM Officer Lt. Baltz was informed that ES1 wanted to contact the habitat. Although he knew the procedures regarding ES1 having direct communication with the hab (there is exactly one earth branch of the OCESS authorized to communicate with the hab: MC), he consented as MC staffers seemed willing to be superceded and were present during the conversation, and after much argument he consented to ES1's adamant demands that acting pilot Lt. LeClaire, currently attempting to establish an orbit, be handed the phone. Lt. LeClaire received the phone call in which he was informed, as per habitat Official Logs- March. 1, Mission Dragan 2323 entry, that the US Defense Secretary was court-martialling him for hacking into computer networks. Although the pilot pointed out that the networks were owned and administrated by an Admiral who had given him permission to do so, and despite his assurance that the mission could not possibly proceed unless he fixed the server, and despite Lt. Baltz's insistence upon returning to CAPCOM that the USDS had no authority over an Ottawa-based organization, ES1 refused to acquiesce.

The habitat recognizes their error in not asking permission from MC to fix the server software, but it was the only possible recourse to avoid endangering the progress of the mission; not only was the inability to alter the current flight path dangerous to the crew but when MC has no software they are thoroughly useless. An orbit around Jupiter was successfully established. At this point, the longhouse was struck by an asteroid and a hole was created. Lt. Dunbar was sent to the Longhouse and Lt. Cmdr. Frank to the Interlock and they began to conduct an IVA. A hole in the Longhouse was located, the IVA was inconclusive and the materials were insufficient, so another IVA was planned. MC staffers were unaware that this initial IVA ever took place until this document, partially completed, was read to them; the disruption in MC caused by the actions of ES1 disrupted their hierarchy such that they had absolutely no idea what was occurring aboard the habitat, despite the fact that there was probably never more than 3 or 4 seconds of radio silence on CAPCOM.

Just before the second IVA was set to commence, the EECOM and ENG software were seen to be not updating, and so the
interlock could not be depressurized and the IVA was impossible. Because of this, astronauts who had not slept for up to 15 hours and those who had not eaten a meal for up to 14 hours were forced to wait for the servers in order to eat or access their beds. It quickly became clear that not a single piece of software in MC, C+C or ES1 was functional. At this point Lt. LeClaire assumed the role of CAPCOM officer and asked for permission to fix the server, which he had previously accomplished in less than a single minute. For 13 minutes, Lt. LeClaire was on the phone with ES1 establishing timestamps and useless irrelevant information so that the ES1 employees could firmly establish that the server was in fact down and as to ask permission to fix the problem. They never looked at the server software, rather insisting upon knowing every single timestamp and several values on every possible computer. After 14 minutes on the phone, they demanded the hab reboot their software, which we complied with to no avail, and the two heads of the organization gave permission to the Network Officer to access the server and repair the error. A minute after this, ES1 demanded that they take control of the situation and they recommended that we reboot our computers, which we refused to do as that would not accomplish anything no matter what the server error was. Lt. LeClaire continues to argue with ES1 about receiving permission to access and repair the server. 22 minutes after the initial phone call, Cmdr. Martin and Lt. Baltz give Lt. LeClaire permission to fix the server as it was endangering the habitat. At this point a connection to the server through Lt. LeClaire's netbook known as “GHOST” is made. Authentication with the server fails which leads to only one possible conclusion; ES1 had changed the server password. (See figure 1.0). As a result of this, we are prevented from continuing the mission, and most notably, preventing the sleep-deprived astronauts from going to sleep as the longhouse was depressurized prior to server failure. At this point in time some loud, slightly profane words were shouted in C+C regarding ES1 and their insubordination. At this point in time, CAPCOM was given to Lt. Baltz who then spent 5 minutes bargaining with an ES1 employee as to receive the password to the server as to finally fix the problem. The terms of the agreement were that the HAB had an arbitrary time limit of 10 minutes to access the server to fix the problem. ES1 accepted the demands as well as the demand the Lt. LeClaire writes up a document indicating how to fix the server in the future. 2 minutes later, the password is given to the HAB and Lt. LeClaire attempts to login to the server. The login is successful. Upon login, it is confirmed from the open windows that ES1 hijacked the server by changing the password and also they had changed the background to that of tiled words along the words of, “STOP”. It is also noted that the server software was in fact down due to the efforts of an ES1 employee. The HAB finds this rude given everything that had happened in the past 2 hours. The habitat assumed radio silence as to discuss whether or not to lock out ES1 from the server, but this idea is scraped as to maintain moral high-ground. Lt LeClaire proceeds to fix the software at this point, however, upon opening it he finds that the software had been left in a state far worse then that it was previously left in. This is seen from seemingly random drive letters or blanks in the appropriate boxes as well as a lack of colons, which along with the letter errors caused the server problem to be worse then it originally was. These errors are believed to be caused by an ES1 employee. 3 minutes after access is gained, server issues are seemingly fixed by Lt. LeClaire. Software sync is confirmed with MC, however ES1 refused to sync software for an undisclosed reason. ES1 claims that none of their software is working and asks to speak directly to Cmdr. Martin. The commander adamantly refuses and Lt. Baltz informs them through MC in no uncertain terms that if they talk directly to the habitat then they are rendering MC thoroughly useless as occurred for a period of just over a day during Mission Daedalus 2010, and that they must never reiterate that request. Mr. MP, who spent the entire evening in MC, says: “from the initial failures of the server up until the point where Lt. LeClaire had remapped the drives on the server, MC's purpose had been suppressed and the chain of command was removed. For that duration and all the way until then we had been acting as a router between Earth Station 1 and the Hab's fight for control of mission-critical systems”. It was clear to the habitat that the MC power structure was compromised when Lt. Baltz over CAPCOM heard Mr. Pelletier saying “you're not in charge of me. The Flight Director's in charge of me.” At this point Lt. Baltz insisted on seeing Director Goddard over the cameras, and informed MC with Cmdr. Martin's approval that if there was any reason for them to believe that orders were not coming from Director Goddard the habitat would immediately turn off COM, unplugged cameras and televisions, and retired to the longhouse until 0800 when the admiral was scheduled to return. ES1 finally acquiesces to a system diagnostic. Everything is successful, and Cassini and all the other ES1 computers run. The longhouse vents, an IVA is prepared and the habitat is successfully able to vent the interlock in order to prepare for the IVA. The IVA is successful. However, for the duration of the IVA Lt. Baltz is on CAPCOM with MC attempting to determine whether Hab EECOM is portraying ES1's simulation of what the habitat is like or if it is reading accurate sensor data. For 15 minutes, the Earth Station insists that it is a mock-up of the habitat, so Lt. Baltz, as systems engineer, advises Cmdr. Martin not to allow an IVA because they cannot trust the integrity of the EECOM software as an accurate indicator of habitat conditions. The IVA is delayed for the entire 15 minutes, at the end of which ES1 decides that the distinction between “mock-up” and “accurate sensor data” is that a mock-up is composed of accurate sensor data whereas “accurate sensor data” would be too confusing a way to phrase “accurate sensor data”. The explanation given was that we had traveled back in time, which seemed like a somewhat unlikely explanation when weighed against the notion that the systems were actually doing what they were supposed to do. The habitat is informed that ES1 has been watching a movie for the past 2 hours, which the habitat feels explains a lot.
IVA is completed, food is being prepared, the majority of the crew has eaten, and most are preparing for bed. However, while the last burger is being prepared, a fuse appears to blow and the all the lights simultaneously fail. The crew is able to turn all of them on one by one expect the interlock lights, which at the time of this writing at 0541 EDT March 2, 2011, are still not functioning, and the outlet beside Kelvin and below Tompson also is non-functional. The crew immediately locates a power bar which it substitutes for the outlet, and requests that MC have ES1 run diagnostics on the lights and power. It is generally understood that ES1 is responsible for handling anything difficult or unusual enough that it isn't worth MC's time to answer or is too obscure or impossible for MC to do. However, when the habitat requested that ES1 run a diagnostic on the lights, ES1 stated, according to one MC operative, “it isn't our job to help”. To the understanding of MC and the Habitat, ES1 is in fact on the OCESS's payroll to help, so the statement is deeply confusing.
The distrust that has been sown between the habitat and ES1 this mission and the last is far beyond any other animosity that is possibly acceptable in space travel. ES1 is the paragon of incompetence and, in mapping drives to seemingly random places, the habitat can only conclude that they intentionally sabotaged the functionality of the server and then refused to allow anyone to fix it. This abuse of power takes on a whole new dimension when given the perspective that they prevented a group of hungry and tired people from eating, from sleeping, or from leaving a very small, hot, humid room for well over 2 hours.
IronyFailhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/List_of_MembersList of Members2011-09-10T22:27:27Z
IronyFail: Reverted edits by Sasscat (Talk); changed back to last version by Patrickpowns

Below is a list of Spacesim Members organized by graduating year.

''Feel free to add any names that are not included. Remember to include a link in their respective wiki pages like so: "'''<nowiki>[[List of Spacesim Members#2010|12]]</nowiki>'''"''

This includes all space simulation members. That means everyone who was part of the [[OCESS]], [[OBESS]], or [[ISSS]], depending on the year. A '''/''' denotes a member who resigned or moved away, or a tangential member.
'''Charley Dunstan''' joined Spacesim as quickly as possible at the beginning of her Grade 9 year. She has not been on any missions yet, and supposedly was part of MC for the [[Daedalus 2010|2009-10 mission]]. It is unknown how much she actually assisted. She was also part of MC for the 2010-11 Mission Dragan for two shifts, where she actually participated somewhat, as well as offering insanely unscientific theories for the Anomaly. Later that year, she was appointed Habitat Commander for the Revenge Mission, much to her surprise and fear. She is also renowned as the creator of the [[Catclan]], and <s>does</s> did not know how to use HTML.

==Callsign==
Charlotte/Charley is also known as Darth Glomp and her [[Catclan]] name is Sasscat. On the Spacesim forums she goes by the far more dignified and distinguished title of CharleyHawking.
IronyFailhttp://wiki.spacesim.org/index.php/Arrian_Amir-RafieiArrian Amir-Rafiei2011-09-10T22:23:43Z
IronyFail: Protected "Arrian Amir-Rafiei": I don't like it when people edit my page.

==Background==

==Time in OCESS==

===Grade Nine===

===Grade Ten===

===Grade Eleven===

In his Grade Eleven year, Arrian is the first Tech Director in the new hierarchy. Arrian is also the certified Pilot, Engineering, and EECOM trainer. As per the training, Arrian hopes to have a training manual for orbit done by the end of the school year.

*[[Arrian's Proposal to Rejuvenate Spacesim.org]]
==Callsign==
Arrian's current callsign is "FANCY" in reference to his fanciful piloting skills during mission [[Dragan 2011]] and for his particularly interesting way of saying the word fancy.

==Life Outside Sim==

The '''Director of Web and Archives''', colloquially termed the Webmaster, manages the day to day activities of the OCESS website and its sub-domains: [http://www.spacesim.org spacesim.org], [http://www.forums.spacesim.org/ forums.spacesim.org], and [http://wiki.spacesim.org wiki.spacesim.org].

==Rank==
The Webmaster is a Director in the [[2010-11]] [[administration]]. The Webmaster currently has an ambiguous rank within the Administration hierarchy of [[2009-10]] and before. The Webmaster is generally a senior rank, as the Webmaster presides over and outranks the [[Wikimaster]]. Although sometimes officially classified as a [[Director]] and sometimes as a [[Subcommander]], the Webmaster is between these two levels. This was seen as one of the major reasons that a hierarchy change was necessary, and one of the reasons for the [[2010 Proposal to Change the Hierarchy]]. For the 2010-11 year, the position's responsibilities were temporarily split to create the position [[Archivemaster]].

==Source of Power==
The webmaster derives his or her power primarily from ftp access to the server that hosts [http://www.spacesim.org spacesim.org], [http://www.lisgar.ca lisgar.ca], and [http://www.lisgar.net lisgar.net]. This power is granted to the new webmaster annually by [[Daniel Kekez]] upon application by that year's [[Mission Commander]]s or [[Admiral]] on behalf of the new webmaster.
