There are many ways of '''contacting Spacesim''', both in person or electronically.

==In Person==

Spacesim meets weekly on Fridays at lunch in room 415 on the [[Science Floor]] at [[Lisgar]]. New members are always welcome and members will be present and willing to talk if needed. There are also messages and updates posted outside the [[Office|Spacesim Office]], and there will usually be several members inside the office at any given lunch hour.

Spacesim also meets weekly after school at our [[440 Albert]] facilities every Friday. These work sessions last from about 3 to 9 PM, with [[Task Force]]s being organized at 4 PM, and are also a place where you can contact Spacesim in person.

==Electronically==

Spacesim has various websites at which it may be contacted. There are the [http://www.forums.spacesim.org Forums], as well as the official [http://www.spacesim.org Website]. Spacesim also runs a [http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10569476470 Facebook group] and a [http://twitter.com/SpaceSim Twitter account].
:I thought this should exist because A. there was a red link pointing to this article :), B. we can't redirect to a wikipedia page, and C. we need a spacesim perspective and history, and the different viewpoints when it comes to whether red links should be immediately dealt with even when the person doesn't know anything on the topic, a short-term fix, or leaving them red to motivate people who may have more of a knowledge base in that article. A '''Red Link''' is a link that appears red because the article it's linking to doesn't exist. Although some people suggest that seeing an "ugly" red link will motivate them to create a page, thus making the link the usual blue, the wiki standard is to make an article if at least one piece of information exists about that topic.

The '''Beginner's Guide to the Wiki''' will be a comprehensive resource to assist new members. It will be completed by the end of [[2010-11]].

==Creating a page==
To create a page, you need to click on a [[Red Link]]. You might find red links around the wiki, or if you want to create one yourself, you can search for a pagename that doesn't exist in the search bar on the left hand side of the screen. If the page truly does not exist, you'll see a message
<pre>There is no page titled "red link". You can create this page. </pre>
Where "this page" will be the red link to the page you want to create.

==Editing a page==
If you go to a page that doesn't exist by following a red link, you'll be prompted to edit it immediately, but if you're editing an already existent page, you'll need to click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page. Some pages are protected and can only be edited by System Operators (SysOps) such as the members of the [[Wiki Task Force]] . The [[Main Page]] is an example of a protected page.

==Questions and Comments==
If you're not sure whether or not to edit something, or you want to comment on the way information is being presented without changing it yourself, make a note of it in the Discussion or Talk page of the article you're considering. To do this, click the "discussion tab" at the top of any page.

===Discussion Best Practices===
If you're opening a new category of discussion, create a new header by using two equals signs around some header text, as in "<nowiki>==Header 1==</nowiki>."

If you're responding to someone else's comment, prefix your comment with a colon ("<nowiki>:</nowiki>"). This will cause it to be indented by one indentation. This means that if your comment is the third one in a conversation (the second reply), you need two colons, as in "<nowiki>::Reply lorem ipsum, etc."</nowiki>

'''Always''' sign your comments with a series of four tildes <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>. This will cause your username, and the time of your edit to be appended to your comment. For example, were I to sign this with four tildes, you would see "[[User:Stefanido|Stefanido]] 10:40, 11 March 2010 (EST)"

==Text and Links==
===Text===
To add text to a page, just enter it as you normally would into a word processor. However, you should put a blank line between paragraphs.

===Bulleted Lists===
To make a bulleted list use asterisks (*), as in
{|align=center
|-
|Width=200px|<pre>loremipsum dolorsitamet
*Item 1
*Item 2
*Item 3
</pre>
|Width=200px align=center| Yields
|Width=200px|loremipsum dolorsitamet
*Item 1
*Item 2
*Item 3
|-
|}

===Links===
To make a link to another page on the wiki, enclose the text in double square brackets eg.<nowiki>[[link]]</nowiki>. This will link to the page name enclosed, so if you wrote <nowiki>[[Main Page]]</nowiki>, you would link to the [[Main Page]]. However, if you want to link to a page without using its name in the link text, you need to write the page name then a vertical bar and the the text to be displayed as in <nowiki>eg. [[Page to Link|you will see this]]</nowiki>. For example, if we wanted to link to an article about [[EVA Suits]] with the text "Space Activity Suit," we would write <nowiki>[[EVA Suits|space activity suit]]</nowiki>, and you would see [[EVA Suits|space activity suit]].

In order to link to a page outside of the wiki, for example one on Wikipedia, you would use single brackets, as in <nowiki>[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCESS]</nowiki>. If you want it to show up as something else, simply add a space after the URL and then type out whatever you want to text to appear as, as in <nowiki>[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCESS The OCESS Wikipedia Page]</nowiki>. If you try this you will see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCESS The OCESS Wikipedia Page].

To make a link to a link to a section on the same page you are editing, make a link wit to square brackets and put a pound sign before entering the section name for example: <nowiki>[[#"Section you are linking to"]]</nowiki>.
{{sim}}
The '''Quality Scale''' is a wiki organizational idea designed by [[Ben Paul]] during the summer of [[2009-10|2010]] and implemented by him in September of [[2010-11|2010]] with help from [[Webmaster]] [[Chen-tao LaRochelle]] and other wiki users. The Quality Scale seeks to emulate the efficient quality system of major wikis such as [http://en.wikipedia.org Wikipedia], but with a colloquial naming system that represents Spacesim's union of hard work and fun.

There are three levels of the Quality Scale: Rubbish, Meh, and Awesome.

''Rubbish'' articles are poorly written or formatted, have numerous spelling, grammar or factual errors, first-person writing, etc. They have more priority than other articles and should be cleaned up first. "Rubbish" articles must be ameliorated to maintain Spacesim's high levels of professionalism.

''Meh'' articles are good articles, but not quite perfect. Articles that are constantly being updated fall into this category. They may be well-written, but as their information is in a state of flux, they belong in the "Meh" category. They should have no errors. Ideally, the majority of wiki articles will be "Meh"-level.

''Awesome'' articles are articles that have been discussed in detail and found to be completely factual, well-written, and most importantly, they should be applicable in five years' time with little to no additional editing. Awesome articles should mainly be about events that have happened in the past and that have been completely investigated. They have no priority at all for future editing, being practically perfect.

The '''Beginner's Guide to the Wiki''' will be a comprehensive resource to assist new members. It will be completed by the end of [[2010-11]].

==Creating a page==

==Editing a page==

==Questions and Comments==
If you're not sure whether or not to edit something, or you want to comment on the way information is being presented without changing it yourself, make a note of it in the Discussion or Talk page of the article you're considering. To do this, click the "discussion tab" at the top of any page.

===Discussion Best Practices===

==Text and Links==
===Text===
To add text to a page, just enter it as you normally would into a word processor. However, you should put a blank line between paragraphs.

===Bulleted Lists===
To make a bulleted list use asterisks (*), as in
{|align=center
|-
|Width=200px|<pre>loremipsum dolorsitamet
*Item 1
*Item 2
*Item 3
</pre>
|Width=200px align=center| Yields
|Width=200px|loremipsum dolorsitamet
*Item 1
*Item 2
*Item 3
|-
|}

===Links===

To make a link to a section on another page, make a link with the page name followed by a pound sign a the section name as in <nowiki>[[440#The Great Move]]</nowiki> which brings you to [[440#The Great Move]].
====Redirects====
Let Foo be the redirecting article and Bar be the article it redirects to.
# Edit Foo such that the page's sole content is "'''<nowiki>#REDIRECT [[Bar]]</nowiki>'''"
'''Ben Paul''' is a [[Vice-Admiral]] who was a [[Spacesim]] member from grades nine to twelve. He participated in four main [[mission]]s, numerous [[training mission]]s, and three [[University of Toronto Space Design Contest]] teams. However, his main legacy is his tireless work for the [[Wiki]] and [[archive]]s.

==Grade 9 ([[2006-07]])==
Ben joined Spacesim in Grade 9 after his friend [[Matthew Farkas-Dyck]] did. He was quickly approached by [[Jeff Gao]] to become the new [[quartermaster]], and worked on the [[storage module]]s until [[List of Spacesim Members#2010|other grade nines]] such as Matt and [[Bryce Storey]] held the position. He was given EEP training for "The Pit Demo" but unfortunately, no [[EEPs]] occurred that year. During the [[Mission Alpha]] for the main [[mission]] he acted as a [[simulator]], one of several members simulating hail through the use of [[popcorn]]. As part of the general labour (cleaning, maintenance, and odd jobs) [[task force]], one of the few things he accomplished this year was to screw handles on the drawers in the [[Hawking II]]'s [[longhouse]] the day before [[Coronis 2007]] launched. During the mission proper, Ben served mainly in [[mission control]] with very few shifts as simulator. One part of mission control that year was doing [[parallax]] calculations, although more frequently there were [[Quickie Run]]s and mindless playing of [[Windows Games]]. At the end of April 2007, Ben learned of the existence of the wiki, was promoted to [[wikimaster]] by [[Stefan De Young]], and wasted the rest of his high school career preoccupied with it.

At the end of this year, Ben started Spacesim's obsession with [[Munchkin]], bringing in Fu and Cthulhu and spearheading the creation of [[Sim Munchkin]].

==Grade 9 ([[2006-07]])==
*A video of opening up a Cat5 cable, explaining what the contents are, and then networking two computers
*A video of starting the server software on Fu and correctly configuring the network
*A video of the Hab being launched into a stable orbit

==In Spacesim==

In the Office, there is a plastic toy figurine of Sebulba in his trademark podracer. It comes on an elegant stand and Sebulba's arms and legs are movable. [[Morgan Mersereau]] made it clear that he wished for the podracer not to be touched, due to its being expertly posed in a turning position. Unfortunately, due to the racer being knocked around and Sebulba frequently being lost, it now resides in one of the Sim Office's many filing cabinet drawers.

Sebulba's fame in Spacesim lasted solely for [[2008-09]], and lately exists only on the wiki.

==Movie Character==

<pre>Sebulba was a former slave who had bought his freedom with his incredible skills at piloting a
high-speed podracer. Before long, Sebulba became the star racer of the Galactic Podracing
Circuit, based not only on his formidable racing skills but also his penchant for violence. Many
fellow podracers were killed or injured by Sebulba's reckless steering or out-and-out cheating,
but Sebulba was far too popular to be blamed or penalized.
Euan's Proposal for Formalization of Habitat Tours

Q-Cumber: Euan’s proposal for Formalization of Habitat Tours moved to Euan's Proposal for Formalization of Habitat Tours: capitalization

Habitat Tours (henceforth referred to a Hab Tours) are, perhaps, once of the first and most influential experiences in a career at OCESS, however I believe that they can be an important tool for attracting new members. It is important, however, that we recognize the difference between tours for students and those for adults (ie. the media, board officials etc.). Therefore, I propose that Hab tours be formalized, organized and classified with the needs of different audiences in mind.

General Guidelines for all tours

Though tours must be modified for individual audiences, I propose that the general itinerary for most tours would be somewhat like this:

(0. The Office) * if tour is starting from Lisgar
MC and Keplernicus
Mezzanine
Habitat
longhouse
interlock
Command and control
Hot lab
(Bathroom) *the tourees need not necessarily go in
airlock
(Planetary surface) *depending on its presentability

These tours should include the functions of all these areas as well as:
the role of Simulators, Astronauts and MC
Alpha, Beta and Gamma
the roles of different OCESS executives
future mission plans

Classification of Tours

As mentioned above there are two major categories of tourees: students and adults. Both categories have specific needs to which a tour must be tailored.

Students:
(10 - 20 min. approx.)
Tours for students vary from case to case but these, in general, can afford to be slightly less formal than tours for adults.

Prospective/New members
These tours will act not only as an introduction to OCESS but also, in the case of prospective members, as a way of convincing them to join the club. As such tour guides should focus on making the club seem as attractive and friendly as possible. These tours should not be overly formal, as this might intimidate newcomers, but also not unprofessional, as this would give newcomers the wrong idea about OCESS. For example, a tour guide might mention the names of the bunk beds or the story of how Peter melted his boots but not the creative alternate name for our water pump. Tour guides should also take this as a chance to introduce new members to others as they go along the tour. For example, “This is Ian our Mission Commander.” or “This is Samuel our Education Commander.”

Visiting Alumni

This is a special case as alumni will already know about OCESS. When touring alumni one should skip the conventional OCESS information and focus on new projects. For example a tour guide might mentions new features of he Hab such as the sliding chairs or LAURA.

Adults:
(15 - 30 min. approx.)
Tours for adults should always be conducted in a more formal and detached manner than those for students. This is not to say that they should be boring or be conducted without enthusiasm, but tour guides should keep their audience in mind as always. Adults must be treated with extra reverence since, often, they are persons who are in a position to, shall we say, modify OCESS’s money and/or privileges (ie. school board officials, local politicians and other such visiting dignitaries). With this in mind, tour guides should try and highlight OCESS’s educational benefits (ie. learning chemistry in hot lab, learning physics in flight, EEPS etc). Humour is encouraged since it adds to the tourees enjoyment and puts them in a good mood but, for adult audiences, the humour should not be excessive, puerile or lewd. Try and keep it observational, for example when showing tourees the EVA suits complain about how uncomfortable they are. Also, when touring adults (though ideally this should be done for most tours) try and make sure the Hab is presentable. It makes a good impression.

Tours for 2010-11

In regards to tours this year (especially my newly proposed tours for prospective members) I propose that brief training sessions be held for those interested in conducting tours. I also propose that sign-up sheets for prospective member tours (henceforth PMT’s) be placed on the front of both the main and OCESS offices. in addition Hab tours should be advertised at club’s day. Tours should meet in front of the OCESS office at 3 PM. People who haven’t signed up should, of course, be perfectly welcome to come along but tours should not wait for random people if they aren’t signed up. How long signed up people are waited for should be at the discretion of the tour guides, but waiting past 3:20 is getting excessive. Also, there should be two tour guides for the walk to 440 so that one can go on the bus, with those who can, and one can walk. Do not leave first timers to find their own way to 440.

'''Spacesim Mafia''' is a game that started being played on the [[Spacesim Forum]] in the summer of [[2010-11|2010]]. It is modeled after the popular game Mafia, played both in real life and on forums, wherein a referee chooses players to secretly be killers and they oust various players, while all the while the group at large is trying to guess who the killers are. Its pertinence to Spacesim is that it trains members in keeping secrets from one another. The killers must maintain the facade of being innocent Spacesim members for however long the game lasts, not only on the forums but every time the game crops up in real conversation as well. In 2010-11, the first year in several when [[simulators]] are to be kept secret after several years of their identities being public, this is especially useful training.

The '''Spacesim Hat of Love''' is an interesting object-based phenomenon discovered by a group of junior Spacesim members at [[Ottawa Tech]] in [[2007-08]]. It seems to instill feelings of intense infatuation in young males for random objects and people when placed upon their heads. In some cases narcissism was also induced. The hat is a funnel and shaped rather like the Tin Man's from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wizard_of_Oz_%281939_film%29 The Wizard of Oz] and made of black plastic. Further research into its effects on females is currently being conducted.
The club seems to have only existed at Lisgar for one year, judging by yearbook records.

'''Andy Chen''' is an example of the value of [[Spacesim]]'s attendance at [[UTSDC]]. He graduated from Richmond Hill High School in Toronto in 2009, after meeting Spacesim members at UTSDC. He later attempted to form what was a short-lived spacesim at his high school; this is a lesson in the reasons that we should always attend UTSDC.
==Exchange==
This bio was written by Chen during [[2008-09]]:
{{doc}}
"Andy Chen is this year's exchange astronaut from the Richmond Hill High School Aeronautics and Space Association (based in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto). Born in China, he has spent high school in Richmond Hill. He has extensive interests in mathematics, physics, software development, and sports. He aspires to be a real astronaut and a test pilot for high-performance aircraft. His first dream is to popularize space exploration among Canadian high schools.
Unfortunately, due to complications involving school board approval, Mr. Chen was unable to attend this year's mission."

The '''University of Toronto Space Design Contest (UTSDC)''' is a competition hosted by a group of volunteers at the University of Toronto. Its purpose is to challenge teams of up to five to design a space-related system such as a lunar base or space station. The competition is adjudicated in two categories: Junior (Gr. 7-10) and Senior (Gr. 11-12), and winning submissions are added to the UTSDC-verse, which is a fictionalised extension of reality beginning in 2050 and continuing with the construction of the facilities proposed in aforementioned winning submissions.

The [[OCESS]] has participated three and a half times in the UTSDC and its various teams have won such awards as second and third places as well as best technical report. This participation is one of the factors that led the University of Toronto to sponsor the [[Galileo Challenge]].

UTSDC veterans have frequently expressed the opinion that Spacesim should always participate in the contest even when they do not feel they have a chance of winning, because it is an incredible networking and educational opportunity. The contest has incredible access to actual researchers in the space science field, including tours of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTIAS the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies] as well as a huge multitude of brilliant guest speakers. In [[2009-10]] at UTSDC, [[Bryce Storey]] got to drive a lunar rover that was 4,000 km away, while [[Samuel Baltz]] would have had he realized that metres were not the same thing as kilometres.

==Point Five==

In [[2005-06]] [[Mission Commander|Mission Commanders]] [[Stephen Smith]] and [[Crystal Xiao]] attempted several times to form a UTSDC team, but ultimately failed to recruit any interested members. They did send away to the competition, however, voicing their hope that the OCESS might be permitted to participate in the future and expressing their desire, as student-led space-oriented organizations, to work together in some form in the future. The UTSDC responded by sending a letter expressing similar sentiments as well as a box of competition T-shirts.

==2007 Contest==

[[Image:UTSDC_2007.jpg|right|frame|[[Brian Foo]], [[Guangye Cao]], [[Jonathan Scothorn]], [[Alex Foo]], and [[Stefan De Young]] of the OCESS's [[2006-07|2007]] UTSDC team.]]
[[Image:DanKekkez.jpg|right|frame|The 2007 team in [[Daniel Kekez]]'s microsatelite lab at UTIAS.]]
In [[2006-07]] the OCESS UTSDC team led by then Mission Commander [[Brian Foo]] won second place overall. Their space-hotel, Endeavor, was also selected as the best technical report of the competition.

While in Toronto, team members enjoyed a tour of the university and its affiliated aerospace engineering facilities (UTIAS). They were then fortunate to be treated to an additional tour of the UTIAS space flight laboratory by spacesim alumnus and former Mission Commander [[Daniel Kekez]], who is currently employed at UTIAS.

The 2007 team members were [[Brian Foo]], [[Stefan De Young]], [[Alex Foo]], [[Jonathan Scothorn]], and [[Guangye Cao]].

==Networking==

After the 2007 team's success, then [[EEP Commander]] [[Jeff Gao]] used the access to the University of Toronto gained by his fellow spacesim members in order to negotiate a partnership with the University to ensure province-wide distribution of the [[Galileo Challenge]].

==2008 Contest==

In [[2007-08| 2008]] the OCESS assembled a team to compete in the Senior category. The members of the 2008 team were [[Anthony Xing]], [[Ben Paul]], [[Daisy Wong]], [[Maclean Rouble]], and [[Arthur Quang]]. Their task was to design an Emergency Response System for the fledgling space infrastructure currently in existence in the fictional time line that all UTSDC projects follow. The competition was held on May 15-18, where the OCESS team gained third place. Mr. Paul, unfortunately, was unable to attend.

==2009 Contest==

In [[2008-09|2009]] OCESS again competed in the Senior challenge, this year to create a training facility for young astronauts. Although [[Daisy Wong]], [[Maclean Rouble]], [[Ben Paul]] and [[Matt Farkas-Dyck]] contributed a fine project, they did not gain a prize, perhaps due to organizational issues caused by Maclean's absence in Belgium for the months preceding the report due date.

==2010 Contest==

In [[2009-10|2010]] OCESS once again competed in the Senior challenge, this year with two separate teams. The first team consisted of [[Maclean Rouble]], [[Ben Paul]], [[Ian Martin]] and [[Amalissa Hum]], while the second team consisted of [[Bryce Storey]], [[Samuel Baltz]], [[Rutger Theodoor Ronald Jansen van Doorn Campbell]], [[Peter Macdonald]], and [[Yvonne Ho]]. The challenge was to protect the Earth from an incoming Near Earth Object, without any form of explosives. Neither team placed, due to their individual extraordinary lack of organization. The first team handed in their proposal a month after the deadline after receiving an extension due to [[Matthew Farkas-Dyck]] leaving the team at the last minute and UTSDC not sending all the information. The second team's proposal was written entirely by Samuel Baltz and Bryce Storey, who also required two extensions. The late proposals automatically ruled the teams out of consideration because they missed the proposals judging contest; this is a valuable lesson for future years.

[[Image:HAB.JPG|thumb|400px|The Hawking III]]
The '''Hawking III''' is the latest [[OCESS]] spacecraft to be built. After Spacesim's move to a new room of [[440 Albert]] in [[2008-09]], a new [[Habitat]] was required and constructed. This new craft was christened the ''Hawking III'', following the tradition of former Habitats.

==History==

===Previous Habitats===

''Main article: [[Habitat]]''

Previous Habitats were [[Habitat#The Hawking|''The Hawking'']], constructed in the early 1990's, and [[Habitat#The Hawking II|''The Hawking II'']], built after the 2001 move to the [[440 Albert Street Administrative Centre]]. The ''Hawking'' was designed to be collapsible, while the ''Hawking II'' was a permanent structure.

===Missions===
''The Hawking III'''s first [[mission]] was [[Genesis 2009]] to the moon Iapetus, conducted in the [[2008-09]] school year. The mission launched several days late, due to unpreparedness of the Habitat, its systems, and other various ground systems. Despite this, the mission accomplished its goals and made evident the remaining issues with the new craft and room.

Its second mission was [[Daedalus 2010]] in the [[2009-10]] school year. The mission destinations are the Jovian moons Io, Ganymede, and Europa.
[[Image:09 W027 configuration.JPG|thumb|300px|The floor plans; they still remain accurate.]]
==Structure==
The ''Hawking III'' was the first Habitat to be constructed professionally, by a group contracted by the [[OCDSB]]. It is smaller than previous Habitats, and has a lower ceiling. The walls are made of drywall panels, metal studs, and plywood. The walls are double-layered, with a gap between panels of approximately four inches. The low ceiling and overall small design of the Hab give a cramped feeling and a more realistic impression of space travel.

The Hab consists of seven rooms: the [[Longhouse]], the [[Interlock]], the [[Control Room]] (or C&C), the [[Bathroom]], the [[Hotlab]], the [[Airlock]], and the [[Engineering Closet]]. The Longhouse is the bunkroom, and has one wall that is inaccessible from the outside, due to it being up against the wall of the room. The Interlock is the main room of the Habitat, and connects all other rooms. It contains a kitchen area (including a wash basin, water supply, cupboards, a fridge, and food preparation equipment), a folding table, and stools. The Hotlab is, as in the previous Habitat, the area in which scientific experiments are performed. It contains a [[Hotbox]] with internal and external access for sample analysis. The Engineering Closet is a room housing access points to the Hab's mechanical systems. It is too small to be entered, but it can be accessed from the Interlock, the Control Room, and the external surface of the Habitat. The Airlock/Decontamination Chamber links the Hab to its outside environment. It functions as an airlock for EVAs and as a Decontamination Chamber to cleanse returning EVA astronauts of any potentially hazardous particles. The Control Room, also referred to as C&C, is where the astronauts perform their usual duties. It houses computers with the flight, engineering, environmental, and log softwares, as well as the communications station.

Because electronics go through many of the walls, there are specific "breakaway panels" intended for meteorite strikes to avoid damaging the wiring.
