Laura is the name of a submersible being created for the 2009-10 mission. It is painted yellow as a reference to the Beatles song "Yellow Submarine". Laura is to be piloted by a Mission Specialist to collect samples from underwater and to search for life forms.
Laura uses software, quite similar to that of Orbit software, with the exception of being able to move in three dimensions. The ability to move in three dimensions makes the program more complicated to master then that of the orbit software. The software gives the user all the data that they would need to pilot a submarine such as fathmometer, temperature, and sonar. Using its information, the user is able to locate objects underwater and pilot Laura towards it to take a sample. Using either a top down two dimensional map, or a side view three dimensional grid, the user is able to see where they are in relation to the environment.

Typically, there are up to four on a mission, though often fewer as it is likely that some astronauts will have specialized roles. In recent years, the number of able crewmen has risen, due to the shift towards the older system of duties (see Crew Positions)
2007-2008
The able crewman for the 2007-2008 mission to Mars was:
*Ben Paul
2008-2009
Able crewmen for the 2008-2009 mission to Iapetus were:
*Olivia Frank
*Ian Martin
*Ben Paul
2009-2010
Able crewmen for the 2009-2010 mission to Europa, Ganymede, and Io are non-existent.

All current members of the Mission Deadaleus have mission Ranks

*Bryce Storey --> Chief Engineer
*Christian Angel --> Laura Pilot/Mission Specialist
*Mikaela Stiver --> Laura Pilot/ Mission Specialist
*Euan Wheaton --> Medic

Roles
Rank
Able Crewmen are junior officers, and are typically all of the same rank (Lieutenant). This is due to the fact that more senior ranks are generally held by more senior astronauts, who have had more experience and training, and therefore can hold more specialized positions.
Duties
Able Crewmen typically have no specialized station, and switch off periodically. For example, it is customary, during flight, for Able Crewmen to rotate stations (EECOM, Logs, and sometimes Engineering and CAPCOM).
The Swagger Stick is a thick wooden dowel, similar to a cane, that Brian Foo, former Mission Commander of Spacesim, would tap dance with, causing a plethora of "pole-dancing" remarks. This carried on to the point where someone said, "He's not a pole dancer. If you want pole-dancers, there are some down the street at Barbarella's Diamonds."

In 2010 the swagger stick was roughly pointed and used to test the theory that a pointed stick could go through two pieces of drywall. This test proved successful, although the results of this test have been shared no mission has had the privilege of using this information. The Swagger stick has been shortened over the years, parts were donated to the Hole. It currently rests at about 34 inches.

4.4 MUTINY & HIJACKING
4.4.1 General Procedures
Situation: A person, or a group of people, take control of the Habitat. This may be Mutinying Astronauts, Terrorists or Hijackers. Mission Control is to immediately get in contact with the hijackers/mutineers. They must negotiate with these people. Supply their demands: you must get the Mission Commander and the Habitat back to Earth in one piece.

4.4.2 Mutiny
Try to convince them to stand down. You may have to threaten the mutineers. If the Mission Commander is dead or segregated, offer to lower oxygen levels in the mutineers' module. Attempt to gain complete remote control of the Habitat. Seal off the interlock. Offer to inject radiation into the Habitat. Once returned to Earth, the mutineers are to be taken into custody regardless of what occurs. If absolutely necessary, detonate the Habitat (P4.4.4)

4.4.3 Hijacking
If another party boards the Habitat, and you cannot negotiate with them, Mission Control is to aid the Astronauts remotely to retake the Habitat by force, if viable. Seal off the Command and Control Room. Gain complete remote control of the Hab. Attempt to vent or depressurize modules containing hijackers, if it doesn't affect the astronauts. If in space, deactivate the 3DMI to remove artificial gravity. If the astronauts are dead, follow P4.4.4.

4.4.4 Habitat Self-Destruction
If there is no way to return the Habitat and/or the Mission Commander and loyal astronauts are dead, activate the self-destruct circuit. Only the Mission Commander on Earth will know the activation code. He is to send it on a coded signal to the AYSE Drive, which will seek out the Habitat if separated, autodock, and detonate.
The term Mission-Specific refers to ranks within the administrative hierarchy of Spacesim that only take effect during the main mission. It is worth noting that mission-specific ranks are different from mission roles; the former describes positions of power within the mission, frequently held by members who have no actual power at other times, while the latter can describe any position during the mission. A good example of the former would be Flight Director, while a good example of the latter would be Simulator.

Work sessions usually take place on Friday evening, every week. They last from about 1530 to 2100 and it is during these work sessions that the task forces do their work. Work sessions officially start at 16:00 with a meating in the MC area with commanders diving up roles and task-forces.

Structure
The work session is for work to be done by the task forces. When people arrive at the work session, they sign up for one of the many task forces available. They can chose to leave at any time but they should be working most of the time. The task forces operate on such tasks as constructing equipment and furniture to repairing the planetary surface or fixing radios during the work session.

Facilities
The work sessions currently take place at our 440 Albert Street location.
Munchkin is a non-collectible card game published by Steve Jackson Games. It became a Sim phenomenon when member Ben Paul brought in his Munchkin Cthulhu and Muchkin Fu games early in the summer of 2006-07. They began to be played at lunch and both before and after school, and other members brought in their own sets, such as Brian and Alex Foos' Munchkin Impossible and Nevin Hotson's Star Munchkin. This prompted several Spacesim members to design their own "Sim Munchkin", but this project was abandoned in June '07 when the forums went down, carrying the project with it. It was banned from the Sim Office during 2007-08. It was then unbanned in 2008-09. Some members hope to collect all the sets and combine them into one very, very messed up game.
The Hall of a Thousand Eyes is another name for the bathroom. The bathroom received this name before the 2008-09 mission when some of the members thought it would be a joke if some pictures of the Canadian Space Shuttle astronauts were pasted on the wall of the bathroom that would 'stare' at the astronauts, making them uncomfortable when in the bathroom. As the day went on the joke was changed - instead of one picture, one whole wall would be pasted with the pictures. This idea continued to be expanded upon. By the end of the night the whole bathroom was pasted floor to ceiling with the pictures. Poor estimates guessed there are 'OVER 9000' eyes staring at you, while counting them leads to the result being much closer to 5000.

The Sim Office was, in the past, mainly a place of recreation housing two Sega Genesis machines. The Mission Commanders, however, intend for it to be used for work.

To that end, an old Macintosh computer with word processing capabilities and a printer had been installed by the Mission Commanders of 2006-07 to allow for the drafting of Spacesim related documents in the Office. The Macintosh was removed from the Office later that year, and the printer archived. In 2009 it was brought to Ottawa Tech and hooked up to Fu.

Currently, a fully-fledged network of PCs obtained from the West-Stairs Spawn Point by the grace of Mr. Kronberg resides in the office, and offers a full simulation in the form of a piloting, eecom, engineering, and simulator computer. This allows members to practice their software skills without needing access to the facilities at Ottawa Tech. Also, these computers will be used for mission control operations in 2009-10.

The office also houses a telephone capable of "dialing-out" that has been used several times to contact schools for the Galileo Challenge as well as to contact several schools about planetariums.
Various Sim Lore articles are posted on the Sim office bulletin boards. These include Trogdor lyrics, news articles concerning Pink Water, and a proposal for a kitty-butter star drive.

There is also a multitude of objects that adorn the shelves and sometimes the walls of the Sim Office (most of which are dormant in the various drawers they now occupy) including Sebulba.

Additionally, the Spacesim Office Filing Cabinet is widely regarded as a source of infinite and untold wisdom and Sim Lore, including floor plans of old and current facilites, artifacts from old EEPs and a Summer Camp, and even folders that may not be opened containing old applications for various positions.

Samuel's Proposal to Rejuvinate EEPs is a Proposal by Samuel Baltz, begun on January 13, 2010, outlining how OCESS would go about reformatting and restarting EEPs after their long absence from the club's agenda. The Proposal is addressed to current Education Commander Bryce Storey, and current Admiral and Teacher Advisor Dr. Jim Magwood. It is reprinted below in its entirety.
History
This proposal was completed and presented to Dr. Jim Magwood on January 14, 2010. Copies currently reside on the Doctor's laptop, the Spacesim Network at Ottawa Tech and the network in the Spacesim Office, and the original copy is in the one remaining EEPs binder in the Spacesim Office for any member to review. Members are invited to give input directly to Samuel Baltz or on the Talk Page of this article.

Samuel Baltz promises to actually do something about the proposal after the end of exams for the first semester of 2009-10.
Reception Within the Club
On its very first day, the controversial proposal spawned a (not unusual) raging argument in the Spacesim Office between Samuel Baltz, Ian Martin, Arrian Amir-Rafiei, Bryce Storey, and later Ben Paul, causing Ian Martin to write on the chalkboard "Dear Bryce: EEPs. Samuel’s Proposal to Rejuvenate EEPs.
Begun: January 13, 2010, Samuel Baltz
Introduction
For the majority of its existence, Spacesim was a club designed to promote two different goals: that of educating students within the club, and that of educating students without. In its current state the OCESS is a rewarding and enriching experience for those high school students within the OCDSB who belong, but it has lost focus in the area of external education.
Our current Education Commander and Teacher Advisor do not by any means hold blame, and the goal of this proposal is in no way to assign blame. To our Teacher Advisor, Dr. Magwood, we extend our deepest gratitude for his innumerable contributions to the education of students within and without OCESS, and Bryce Storey, our Education Commander, we thank for the hard work on Missions and Planetariums that have made him an invaluable resource to OCESS.
The problem does not lie with our hard-working commanders, nor does it lie with our Admiral to whom we are so indebted. The problem is best expressed by that position within Stefan’s Proposal to Change the Hierarchy that has been so quickly forgotten --- as of the formulation of this Proposal the position of EEPs Sub-Commander is not even listed on the 2009-10 page of the OCESS Wiki, and Amalissa Hum is instead termed “Planetarium Sub-Commander”, a position that does not even exist in Stefan’s Proposal as implemented by Spacesim. This is not an issue of poor editing or lazy implementation of facts; this is merely an example of the underlying attitude that causes this position to be defunct, that has morphed it into an artifact of a bygone age when OCESS members deigned to enlighten the OCESS members of the future. In the elementary students of the OCDSB lies to continuity of Spacesim --- they are our hope for longevity.
The OCDSB removed our permission to hold EEPs at the Bronson Media Centre --- let us hold EEPs in elementary gymnasiums.
Buses cost money --- let us walk, close schools are our feeder schools anyway.
Our materials are heavy --- let us design experiments that use only light materials.
Our EEPs binders are lost --- let us write new EEPs binders, or make do with those we have and with our combined knowledge.
All the information presented in EEPs is on the internet --- people still attend school.

If we are to re-implement EEPs, the first of many steps is to redesign them so as to ensure that they contain only accurate, up-to-date information. The following Articles detail how this can be accomplished.

Articles Concerning the Pit Demo
Article 1: In 2006 Pluto was redefined by the International Astronomical Union by a majority of approximately 90% of voting astronomers, and it thereby lost planetary status. It is my suggestion that the station regarding Pluto be replaced with a station regarding exoplanets. This station could consist of the Create An Alien station originally intended for Galactic Tours.

Article 2: A script, or an approximation of one, must be written (or rewritten) not only so that the presenters will give concise and accurate information but so that they will remain approximately true to the time limit.

Article 3: The Mercury demonstration should be reworked. Having children circle one another seems boring, perhaps this could be replaced with a station wherein the demonstrators hold a sheet with a soccer ball in the middle of it and the children one by one roll an orange around it (as per Einstein’s analogy re: marbles). Be sure to explain that the orange only slows down because of friction, and that the fact that there is no friction where there is no atmosphere prevents the planets from crashing into the sun. This demonstration would also allow for a brief introduction to gravity wells, because it will be apparent that the orange too makes an impression on the fabric.

Article 4: The guide to the Pit Demo contains no mention of Jovian Planets vs. Terrestrial Planets. Why? The script (Article 2) should contain cool facts about the planets. These cool facts should allow the demonstrations to better relate to the body in question, as in the case of Mercury whose Pit Demo station has nothing to do with it.

Article 5: We should write a station for Uranus, even though it will make little children laugh. I will be willing to do this once I get my copy of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos back; Carl Sagan likes to mention cool facts.

Article 6: Other important bodies in the solar system are entirely ignored. The Asteroid Belt and the Oort Cloud, from the Plutoids to the Magellanic Clouds, have no mention whatsoever. I would propose an eighth station in the Pit Demo (this also serves to split the children up further which, according to Bryce Storey, is a good thing) dedicated to the miscellaneous objects of the solar system.
This station could include one of the following: A re-use of Pluto’s old demonstration? A demonstration of the Doppler Effect? A demonstration involving red and blue shifts as seen through a prism?

Conclusion
This proposal has only dealt with a small piece of the work that must be done in order to successfully rejuveate EEPs. The Pit Demo is but one of many popular Spacesim demonstrations, and many of these other demonstrations have already been updated previous to the formulation of this proposal by various members of OCESS throuhout the years, and these updated versions should be consulted preferentially. Once they have been reviewed the formulation of other proposals or the amendment of this proposal with entire articles is likely.

Thanks for reading,
---Samuel Baltz. January 14, 2009.

Amendments
Amendment 1: Vice-Admiral Stefan De Young suggests that a student contact the OCDSB and ask to have EEPs pushed to the schools in light of their unique capacity for educating not only younger students but the presenters as well. In addition, the fact that students are teaching students is a situation that the OCDSB is admitedly fond of.

Introduction
The Habitat is a space simulation facility. Its primary purpose is to simulate the living and working environment of
the OCESS Astronauts while they execute the mission. There have been three Habitats.

The Habitat is often referred to simply as 'The Hab'.

History
The Hawking
The original Habitat was called The Hawking, named after famous physicist Steven Hawking.

The original Habitat was first built in the Early '90s, and was designed to be collapsible. It constituted three primary rooms: the Interlock, the bathroom and the Longhouse. The original Interlock was made from Wooden Walls, hinged together so that they could fold up, while the Longhouse was a half-cylinder, framed with curved piping, and having a canvas overlaid on top. Additionally, the Habitat had an Airlock.

The Habitat was set up in school gyms for at least one mission before it found its long-term home at the old Ottawa Technical High School. In the late '90s, OCESS moved to the Bronson Street Media Centre as the School Board was going to shut down the Ottawa Technical High School. The Habitat moved with Spacesim, but the old Airlock would not fit into the limited space. A new, crawl-through airlock was built for this facility.

Why the Habitat was Forced to Change
Spacesim continued undisturbed at the Media Centre until the Spring of 2001. During this year, the Board decided to reclaim the Media Centre, and discourage Spacesim from continuing. One method of discouragement was random fire inspections. The Board successfully deemed the Old Habitat a Fire Hazard, dispite the fact that a mission commander attempted to light the canvas on fire with a lighter in front of him. The OCESS managed to reclaim its old space at the Old Ottawa Technical High School, now known as the 440 Albert Street Administrative Centre, but at the cost of constructing a new Habitat to meet Board specifications.

The New Habitat would require to meet all building and safety codes, have official blueprints, and moreover have these blueprints stamped by a Professional Engineer. Additionally electrical work had to be approved by a certified electrician.

The Hawking II
The Hawking II was referred to as The New Habitat during construction, shortly thereafter named The Hawking II, and finally officially named The Brahe during the 2002-2003 year. Since then, this name does not appear to have stuck, and it is simply called The Hab.

The Hawking II was designed by Alex Ghosh, Ross Green, and Nikolas Zuchowicz, with strong influences from David Owen, who was then a recent alumnus. It was originally designed to be modular, with each room receiving its power through the Interlock, effectively "plugging in", so that the modules could be arranged in any orientation. The Interlock was designed to handle five sub-modules, and was supposed to have power and access doors for that many. Unfortunately, due to space constraints and electrical concerns, such a configuration became unfeasible, and the Habitat was locked into its current setup and hardwired.

The Original Plans called for an Interlock, Hotlab, Bathroom, Longhouse, and Airlock. Construction took place during the Fall of 2001 and the Winter of 2002. The Longhouse was the first module to be finished, and was used for that year's Mission Alpha. The Hotlab was not constructed in time for The new Habitat's first mission, and instead was constructed during the 2002-2003 year.

Originally envisioned as having an aluminum sheet-metal structure, drywall was selected as the material of choice for cost and safety concerns. The Drywall was easier and cheaper to repair, completely immune to fire and emergency exits could be created anywhere as required.

The Hawking III
Main article: Hawking III

The Hawking III is the third Hab built in the Hawking series and was constructed as a result of OCESS moving to a new room. The Hawking III is smaller than the previous Hab, and is roughly square in shape. In addition to having a smaller footprint, its ceiling is significantly lower than that of the previous Hab, costing the astronauts valuable storagespace while giving the interior a cramped feel and making the new Hab a more realistic approximation of space travel. The Hawking III is the first Hab to be constructed by professionals contracted by the OCDSB. The Hawking III was built and completed during the 2008-2009 school year, and was first used for the 2009 mission, Genesis 2009.

It is built mostly of drywall panels and metal studs, with one of the rooms (Control Room) being paneled in plywood. It is double-layered, with an inner and outer panel of either drywall or plywood and an internal space of approximately four inches --- the depth of a 2x4 plank.

Rooms
In The Hawking the Interlock served as living space and command centre for the Astronauts, containing their kitchen and control units. Additionally, the Airlock was off of the Interlock. The Longhouse was primarily used as a Laboratory, but was often used for sleeping space. The Longhouse connected the Bathroom to the Interlock.

Within the The Hawking II, the Longhouse was dedicated to living space, while the scientific aspects have been split into a new Hotlab. Originally planned to be the Hotlab, the room connecting Interlock and Longhouse became the Bathroom. The new Hotlab was closer to the Planetary Surface allowing samples to be easily passed within. The only evidence of the old Hotlab within the Bathroom is some structural reinforcement around the location where a docking port for Robbie was supposed to go. In 2007-08, the Hotlab, considered to be too big, was taken down, and construction on a smaller Hotlab began.

In The Hawking III, The Interlock of habitats past split into two separate rooms: the Control Room, the command centre, and the Interlock, now the kitchen and communal area. The Hotlab was thankfully granted more room than before.

Environmental Simulation
The Habitat was simulated using software known as CMES. It keeps track of the temperature and pressure of all rooms, as well as the status on the doors and airlocks (open/closed). It now uses a different combination of programs developed by Dr. Jim Magwood to accomplish the same function. Most notable among these is EECOM for environmental and door monitoring.

The Habitat can be observed by Mission Control through a series of cameras, as well as an extention of the Simulation Software.

Electrical System
The Habitat receives its power through the Interlock. There is a small power cabinet on the back wall.

Simulation Habitat
See main article Simulation: habitat

Within the confines of the simulation, the habitat is a large structure. It is made of laminated aluminium and foam to absord radiation and meteor impacts. This description is not to be mistook for reality, as the Hab is actually constructed of metal studs and drywall.

Cameras
Hawking I: Not much is known about the camera structure.

Hawking II: The Cameras were run off a dedicated system designed to run the Corel Camera systems. The Computer designated to preform this vital task was named Stonehenge, with the monitor being the Eye of Stonehenge. In the Hawking II the entire habitat was viewable from any TV, and there were four televisions wired into this network. Stonehenge was located in Mission Control allowing the questionable members of mission control to switch the astronauts camera views and disappear. The Astronauts were assigned two Televisions, one in the Longhouse (Doyle) and one in the Interlock. MC had two. The Simis used an entirely separate camera system based off light switches in the Simi Area.

Hawking III: The current camera system is up in the air, as of right now each television is wired directly into a camera. There is a prototype switching system being build by Lt. Paul. There are four televisions in Mission Control (Names here) one to each of Longhouse, Interconnect and two to C&C. The Astros have two televisions of their own: Pumpkin and (Name) Pumpkin is a small orange television used to view MC and (Name) has the prototype switch and views either the Airlock or the Hotlab.
Mission Integrity refers to the principle that no action taken by any party to the Mission shall hinder the impression that (at least for the astronauts and Mission Control staff) the mission is taking place in Real Life.

Mission Integrity is paramount.

The Golden Rule
The Golden Rule states: Nothing goes in; Nothing comes out.

The Golden Rule was established when Astronauts would too often find that, due to innadequate planning and/or lack of checklists, they were missing essential equiptment, food, or toiletries, etc.

Notable violations of The Golden Rule have seen school notes, flashlights, and even an X-Box passed through the Power Box in the Interlock.

Violations of The Golden Rule are a gross breach of Mission Integrity. However, an inventive solution to the astronauts' plight that did not violate The Golden Rule was used during the 2006-07Mission where shampoo, garbage bags, and several other items were launched in a Rubbermaid capsule, which crash-landed on the Planetary Surface, and had to be retrieved during an EVA. Such solutions are to be applauded, as they resolve problems while keeping Mission Integrity, although these have been frowned upon and will not be cunducted during mission deadelous (and premubaly future misshins).

Able Crewperson (also "able-bodied crewman") is the term to describe an astronaut who does not happen to have a specific role or position on the mission. A notable able crewperson was Nevin Hotson, who is credited with having coined the term. ==History==
On all documented missions in Sim history, there have been able crewmen. Typically, there are up to four on a mission, though often fewer as it is likely that some astronauts will have specialized roles. In recent years, the number of able crewmen has risen, due to the shift towards the older system of duties (see Crew Positions)

Able Crewperson (also "able-bodied crewman") is the term to describe an astronaut who does not happen to have a specific role or position on the mission. A notable able crewperson was Nevin Hotson, who is credited with having coined the term. In the 2007-08 astronaut application, the term "General Labour" was used instead, but it denotes the same role.

History
On all documented missions in Sim history, there have been able crewmen. Typically, there are up to four on a mission, though often fewer as it is likely that some astronauts will have specialized roles. In recent years, the number of able crewmen has risen, due to the shift towards the older system of duties (see Crew Positions)
2007-2008
The able crewman for the 2007-2008 mission to Mars was:
*Ben Paul
2008-2009
Able crewmen for the 2008-2009 mission to Iapetus were:
*Olivia Frank
*Ian Martin
*Ben Paul
2009-2010
Able crewmen for the 2009-2010 mission to Europa, Ganymede, and Io are:
*Christian Angel --> Laura Poilet/Mission Specialist
*Mikaela Stiver --> Laura Piolet/ Mision Specialest
*Bryce Storey --> Chef Engineir
*Euan Wheaton --> Bandaid-Man (Medic)
Announcement of the able crewmen for this year will follow the final announcement of the astronaut crew.
Nevin Hotson has been a member of the OCESS since September 2005. He has participated in the Mission for each of his three years in the Simulation, acting as an Able Crewman on Prometheus, Chief Engineer on Coronis, and Habitat Commander on Red Dawn.

In the OCESS
2005-06
In 2005-06, Nevin worked on such projects as the Habitat doors and the plumbing system. He participated in that year's EEP, the last one done in the past six years, and in two planetarium presentations. On Mission Prometheus, he held the fairly nondescript job of Able Crewman.

2006-07
Nevin began 2006-07 by taking on the role of Webmaster. Most of his time at work sessions continued to be spent working on the doors, which gradually morphed into the bane of his existence by defying all attempts to make them work.

During Mission Coronis, he was notable chiefly for his work in the position of Chef Engineer and for his involvement in Bunkbedgate. His participation in a planned Extended EVA was cancelled due to Alpha weather conditions.

2007-08
In 2007-08, Nevin was selected as Mission Commander for his final year in the OCESS. Initiatives undertaken during his tenure included the construction of the Engine Closet, the development and partial implementation of the NOVEL system, and the final development of a door system that actually works.

As Habitat Commander during Mission Red Dawn, Nevin led the mission to a generally successful and only slightly tardy conclusion while managing to transmit a cold to most of his crew.

Outside the OCESS
Nevin was on Lisgar's Reach for the Top team since Grade 9, and was the captain and top scorer in 2007-08.

After his high school career, Nevin is currently continuing his studies at the Royal Millitary College, in Kingston, Ontario.

The Chief Engineer is the astronaut responsible for managing the Habitat's systems before and during the mission.

Responsibilities
Typical tasks which the Chief Engineer performs include:
* Managing the Power Grid software
* Discussing matters related to Engineering Systems with Mission Control, such as
** Repair or replacement of damaged components
** Contingency plans in case of emergency
* Coordinating repairs to the Habitat

Chief Engineers and Sim Lore
The most common reference to the Chief Engineer in Sim Lore is a pun. During the preparation for the 2005-06 Mission Mission Prometheus, Nevin Hotson was assigned the title "Chief Engineer" by the current Mission Commander Steven Smith. Due to Steven's typo, Nevin was then refered to as the Chef Engineer. With the new title he was then given the preparation of food duty. The pun stems from the word 'chef' meaning 'Chief' in French and 'Cook' in English, as well as sounding like the English word 'chief'.

Purpose
The role of the simulator has historically been to ensure the realism of the simulation. They are the only members of Space sim who may break The Golden Rule. They are given this perogative to help everyone else with suspension of belief.

The Average Simulator Day
From a basic standpoint, the simulators are responsible for ensuring the environmental conditions of a planet are experienced by the crew. If the planet was researched to be windy, then the simulators will ensure wind is experienced. If the planet is unstable, then earthquakes will be experienced. The actual activities of the simulator group vary from year to year, depending on the conditions of the planet.

Emergencies
In addition to simulating day-to-day living in Space (or on a Planet's surface), Simulators are responsible for creating emergencies. These are usually designed to be puzzles or situations that the Astronauts must work with Mission Control to resolve. Common issues are Ion Storms (which would knock out electronics or cause radio silence) and Meteor Strikes (which may cause damage or hull breaches to the Habitat). More complicated, (and planet-dependent) there have been volcano eruptions, water floods of the surface and habitat, earthquakes, reactor coolant leaks, and out-right equipment breakdown requiring repair. During one mission, the The Hawking crash-landed beside The New Habitat.

One of the earliest recorded incidents involving simulators is known as the Pink Water Incident. The astronaut drinking water supply became contaminated (and appeared pink). The astronauts were required to perform tests upon the water to determine if it was still safe.

More recently, the simualtors have resorted to less scientific situations, such as terrorist attacks and other such disasters to break up the monotomy of a Mission. Some of the more creative simulator stunts have involved aliens. In the past, such situations were reserved for Mission Alpha.

Methods
The methods used by simulators is classified to them and them alone. If you wish to learn how past simulators operated, seek them out and ask them directly, though you are unlikly to get any information out of them.

Secrecy
Historically, the Simulator task force was a secret one. Known only to the Mission Control Mission Commander, they would often occupy Mission Control positions, possibly causing sabotage right under everyone's noses. It was also helpful for the simulators to have 'planted' Mission Control staff during a planned emergency, as that way if the regular staff couldn't come up with a solution, the planted staff could simply appear more creative.

Simulators have been known to infiltrate as high as copilot.

In the past few years, the members of the simulator group were well known to most spacesim members. Lately, there has been a move to return to keeping the members of this group secret from the rest of Space Sim. Hopefuly this will lead to possible infiltration of the 2 other groups of spacesim and consequently, more interesting scenarios.

Hab Gnomes
Recently, simulators haven been reffered to during the mission as "Hab Gnomes" by the astronauts. Although this designation is incorrect, astronauts persist in using "hab gnome" to discribe any simulator that they have caught "in the act".
