Talk:Samuel's Proposal for Training Missions

Max.Jeffcott:

Holding back information
Mission Control may have legitimate reasons for holding back information. For instance, if it is impossible for the Habitat to fix an issue before moving on to the next most important task, Mission Control may hold back potential solutions, while ordering the astronauts to the next task. It is Mission Control's duty to make sure that the astroanuts accomplish their goals, and it is the Mission Control Commander's or any Flight Director's perogative to decide which information the Habitat needs in order to best fulfill their duties. Of course, as a perennial astronaut, I am for full disclosure. However, the Mission Control Commander's authority is absolute. He is in charge of the mission. Period. -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:Absolutely. I was more aiming to convey that I have seen, both in a training mission and in a main mission, Simulators not give information to Mission Control on the grounds that the astronauts had not yet directly asked for a solution to the disaster at hand. - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)

Punishment
Perhaps not punishment, but simulator reaction to astronaut action is the duty of the simulator. For instance, during Daedalus 2010, Jeffcott and I were watching the Simulator Mezzanine. There had been a short on the secondary power bus, and the astronauts were flicking the lights on and off. Jeffcott and I, as simulators, determined that this flickering would exacerbate the short, and proceeded to cause ln1 to malfunction and disabled the C&C lights. This sort of reaction and quick thinking is absolutely the job of the simulator, and is not so much punishment of the astronauts as it is an attempt to simulate how the real world might interact with the astronauts. -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:If it is a reaction that follows logically from the astronauts' behaviour, that is absolutely appropriate. If it is in the mindset that the astronauts deserve to have unrelated bad things happen to them because they have behaved in an "inapproriate" fashion, I see no constructive purpose. - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)

Goals
In my opinion, your proposals miss the main issue with training missions as they currently stand. The number one problem with training missions as they are executed today is that there are no clear-cut goals for the astronauts to pursue and for Mission Control to direct them towards. I feel that if a training mission had one or two well defined goals and several clear-cut end conditions, training missions would proceed with much more expediency and interest. "This is what we have to do. Now let's figure out how to do it." -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:I agree that we need that. That, however, is not all that we need. Would you like to add it as an amendment? - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
Mr. Samuel Baltz, I am requesting that you stop reading my mind. Either that or everyone reacts the same way when inexperienced simulators happen.

The Engineering Closet in the Hawking III is an aptly named closet off of the Interlock. Approximately 4 feet deep by 4 feet wide, the closet is as tall as the rest of the hab and is entirely taken up by 8 wooden boards forming what would be shelves if they were connected by boards. This is because, due to Fire Safety Procedure, a room less than 1 metre along its smallest direction cannot hold students at any time. In the Beta reality the engineering closet theoretically holds the vital machines that keep the habitat going, but for a long time in Alpha reality it mostly held old video cards and a box of what is rumoured to be 126 km of fiber-optic cable. It also contains the fabled Engine speaker.
In the EECOM software the Engineering Closet is treated as the same room as the Interlock. Because of this it is treated as not being airtight, and although it has the metal tabs necessary to support door panels they are not wired. Despite this, EECOM displays a door between the Interlock and Engineering Closet, which simply never registers pressure differences.
There was an Engineering Closet in the Hawking II for a few months before the room change.
Project to Clean the Engineering Closet
In 2009-10 Bryce Storey and Samuel Baltz began a project to clean up the engineering closet. They
*attached a shelf to the top of the closet's wooden structure
*boarded up holes to make it look airtight
*replaced pieces of duct tape that were letting light through or falling off
*procured a ShopVac and used Aluminium Tape to make it look like an air compression system
*found some boxes with lots of wires
Mikaela Stiver notably designed and built a small door to cover up the indent outside of the engineering closet's power box, as well as to provide easy access to the closet from outside the habitat.
Anthony's dances were a series of exaggerated motions and gestures that Anthony Xing sometimes employed to help explain certain ideas, or to express his opinion towards certain subjects such as calculus. Certain members, such as Daisy Wong, found them to be very amusing and subsequently requested their performance during Worksessions; a request that Anthony fulfilled most of the time. Though he himself does not consider them as dances, or anything unusual for that matter, others around him began to compile lists of such dances and the instances that they were performed.
These dances include the infamous "Raindrop Dance," which was the point of Anthony's debut. Following that were others such as the "Octopus Dance," "1812 Overture Dance", and the "Barr-body Dance," which is often considered the pinnacle of his career.

1991-92 is the first year where recorded history shows that a mission was held in Ottawa by the OBESS. It involved a Lunar Habitat, which was constructed by the cooperation of two high schools, Lisgar Collegiate Institute and Highland Park High School, and designed by Kirsten Weisz and David Junk. Exchange students from South Carolina, Houston, and Montreal participated in this inaugural mission.

Yearbook
Vox Lycei had the following write-up for The International Student Space Simulation at Lisgar.

One small step for science, one huge bound for Lisgar. The OBE Student Space Simulation enjoyed a very prestigious year. Not only did we conduct our first simulated space mission [sic] but we also hosted exchange students from South Carolina, Houston and Montreal. Local sponsors such as Spar, Systemhouse, Carleton, GNR and Lockheed supported us financially, and a partnership with Highland Park made the mission possible. Thanks to the entire team and especially Mr. Pritchett who worked so hard. Kirsten Weisz.
Europa is a moon of Jupiter. It is hypothesized that there is liquid water under Europa's surface of water ice, making it a prime candidate for extraterrestrial life.

Spacesim Missions
Spacesim has visited Europa thrice as a main mission destination:
*Europa 1997
*Europa 2001
*Daedalus 2010

Spacesim Findings
Radiation Hazard
Due to its location in the centre of a main Jovian Van Allen Belt, the radiation at the surface of Europa is high. During Daedalus 2010, this caused the Hawking III to spend only 12 hours at a time on the surface, in order to retain enough fuel to run the radiation shields at a sufficiently high percentage (near 60% on RAD1). The Habitat was also required to burrow itself into the ice shelf -- that is to say, use its engines to melt a narrow trench, and once sufficiently deep within the trench, use short bursts of RCS thrusters to cave in a layer of ice above the roof of the Habitat. Extra water from Europa was also run through the hull to further protect against radiation. Despite these efforts, the astronauts suffered significantly more radiation than in most missions.
Candidates for mission destinations have been planets, moons, and even asteroids as the OCESS astronauts search for their own educational experience in the depths of "space" by conducting experiments, simulated extra-terrestrial/space walks, piloting space vehicles and dealing with various simulated scenarios and problems that may play out over the course of a real space mission such as meteor strikes, ion storms and engine failures.

During the mission, the astronauts remain inside the Habitat, their only contact with the outside world being through a telephone, radios, webcams, and computers much like a real space mission. It is inside the Hab that they must eat, drink, sleep, play and carry out all life functions. These astronauts usually miss several days of school to wear flight suits and helmets while the rest of the school wishes they were missing school with them.
Mission History
The first mission in Ottawa took place in 1991-92. From then until the 2002-03 Mission, missions were 72-hours in duration. In fact, the 2001-02 mission was originally scheduled to be the first 96-hour mission, but was delayed 24 hours by the OCDSB.

Historically, missions ran from a Thursday to a Sunday, although recent times has seen them move to occupy more of the school week. The mission date was set for February by the International Student Space Simulation so that all missions would occur simultaneously. This practice continued until around 1995-96, at which point, mission date coordination only took place between Ottawa and our sister-mission in Lexington, South Carolina. The South Carolina exchanges ended in the late 90's, but the 2001-02 mission did involve an exchange with a school from Florida.
A Quickie Run is when Spacesim members at 440 Albert put on flight suits and run across Albert Street to the Quickie convenience store, narrowly dodging buses and disturbed motorists. An OC Transpo bus station in front of the Quickie is usually home to some migrating citizens who find Spacesim members weird. At the Quickie dinner, snacks, and drinks are bought and then consumed at 440. Lately, Spacesim members have been buying large tubs of ice cream to eat, with an "ice-cream pool" taking over or augmenting the "pizza pool" and "pop pool".

Famous Purchases
Famously, Stefan De Young would purchase a combo deal of two two-litre bottles of RC Cola and chug all four litres within the confines of one worksession. This combo deal is the origin of the pop-pool phenomenon, as well as a wealth of other members who consume copious levels of soda every week. This practice was begun again by Max Jeffcott upon discovering a 2/$2 deal for RC Cola.

More recently, Peter Macdonald almost choked when chugging gingerale and root beer.

Another purchase that has long been popular in Spacesim is a packaged instant soup called Kim Chi. It is best to purchase this at the same time as Bryce Storey because he will give you his beef powder package for free.
Powerthirst refers to a video circulated on the Internet advertising a fictitious energy drink by the same name. During Mission Red Dawn, the video was carried by Commander Hotson aboard the Habitat using his iPod Touch, and was used as part of various experiments as a way to distract the astronaut being observed. As a result of its inherent memorable nature, and the fact that it was played and watched numerous times, the video became locked in the memory. Thus it served as the basis of many references and jokes among the astronauts and, after the mission, the general member population.

Every year, Spacesim conducts two types of missions: mini, or Training Missions usually lasting about 4 to 6 hours, and a 96-hour "Main Mission" to an astral body in the solar system.

See Spacesim Groups for more information.

Extraterrestrial Objects are objects that Spacesim can visit during any of its Missions. The types of objects include planets such as Mars, satellites or moons such as Europa, and spacecraft such as the International Space Station.

This Category is part of the Planets Project to share what each mission has learned of a particular Mission Destination, so that future generations may benefit. In addition these pages should also include the elementary research that goes into any mission.

The project's status can be monitored on the Talk Page.

Size
The size box should be filled out to give a general idea of what the planet looks like and a sense of scale. Obviously we're not being very exact, but we're not running a geodedical survey here, so we can take some liberties.

If you're using something that is not a regular geometrical solid such as a sphere or cylinder, then you need to specify your shape in a separate article.

Defined shapes include:
width=300px|Dimensions

EEPs Tie-in
If a particular planet or other extraterrestrial has an associated EEP demo, please make sure that that information is included in the article under an EEPs section.

A Visual List
Please fill in any red links. Non-linked items are included for completeness (eg: all the planets; Deimos due to Phobos's inclusion).
Participating remotely in this mission were schools in Franklin, Indiana, El Paso, Texas, Columbia, Missouri, and Lake County, Illinois.
In 2009-10, James Wood contacted the Spacesim commanders and gave them a large list of contributors during this year. That email is the source of almost all of what we now know about this year.
