The Name
The acronym for the full name of Spacesim. OCESS stands for Ottawa Carleton Educational Space Simulation. The name was changed from OBESS (Ottawa Board of Education Space Simulation) in 1998; when the Ottawa Board of Education was amalgamated with the Carleton Board of Education in 1998 to form the Otawa-Carleton District School Board, it was decided that the OBESS should change its name. At a lunch-time meeting, there was some name discussion and a vote was taken. It was decided to call the group the "Ottawa-Carleton Educational Space Simulation" (OCESS). The reasoning is that this new name encompasses the new board and keeps "Education" in our name. Furthermore, we had a nice logo for the OBESS and frankly everyone had better things to do (like prepare for the mission) than come up with a new logo -- so we just changed one letter.

Description
The OCESS or "Space Sim" as it is commonly called, is a student run program based at Lisgar Collegiate Institute. Currently run by Admiral Magwood, the OCESS includes members from all grades and is dedicated to educating its members and others about space sciences and space exploration.

Spacesim has traditionally followed The Golden Rule as its motto.

Re-Branding
In the 2001-2002 year, OCESS underwent some rebranding. Efforts were made to change the feeling of the group from a student club over to a non-profit organization. This effort met mixed results, but are most evident in the more professional website and the new logo.

Mission Statement
During the Rebranding, Spacesim picked up the following mission statement:

<blockquote>The Ottawa Carleton Educational Space Simulation is a Student-Run, Non-Profit Organization Geared Towards Educating Youth about Space And Space Science Through Fun and Interactive Means.</blockquote>

Current status
Currently, Space Sim is run by Co-commanders Brian Foo, and Stefan De Young under the supervision of Admiral Magwood. The current membership stands at about roughly 20 to 25 members and they have hosted one planetarium to date, this year.

Programs
*See Education for main article

Space Sim offers two educational programs, EEP and Planetarium to educate other students, both within Lisgar and without. These programs have been largely successfull in the past, though their demand has been steadily dropping due to lack of publicity. For its own members, Spacesim launches one 5-day simulated mission, as well as several smaller "training missions" per year. These, along with the maintanance and preperation activities carried out by all Space Sim members, educates them not only about space, but allows them to both learn and apply scientific concepts. Spacesim could change its name to "The SpaceSim and Engineering Club" without changing any of its inner workings!

Space Sim also offers its Galileo Chellenge to students of Lisgar and. recently, to students from other schools. With prized donated from Deep Science Accademy, University of Toronto, Carleton University and IBM, we hope that this year's Galileo Challenge will be both educational and profitable for both ourselves, and for our participants.

Space Sim is looking to restart its Summer Camp program by summer 2006-2007. It is looking either at forming a private company or a non-profit approach. Space Sim is also looking, over the course of several years, offer spacesim as a cirriculum course, much like outdoor education. Both of these proposals are long-term projects and will require a lot of work.
This has long been considered a home for old monitors, computers and other stuff that sim members cannot find uses for, but yet cannot bear to throw away. At the start of the year 2005-06, members of Spacesim located the sim archives hidden in the junkyard, as well as the remains of Robbie the robot.

The junkyard holds great historical value for the simulators, as it is where their tools of the trade are stored. This is due mainly to the junkyard's close proximity to the simulator area, and their natural laziness. However, there are plans to reorganize the area into a functional storage area for surplus computers and other hardware.

Mission Prometheus was the Space Simulation's mission to Titan, and was scheduled for take-off on February 28th, 2006 and splashdown return March 4th, 2006.

Mission Purpose
The primary purpose of this mission will be to test if life exists, could exist, or has existed on Titan. This will be carried out by first testing for the presence of various organic compounds needed for life, and/or exclusively produced as a byproduct of life (see "proposed experiments"), and ultimately, to test for life on Titan.

Proposed Experiments
Mission Prometheus Experiments

Another experiment that was proposed (although the astronauts planned to bypass it with a granola bar cartel) is to have the astronauts become self-sufficient by growing their own duck weed from their grey water, and living off that for the last half of the mission.

Data on Titan
Titan

Titan is one of the moons orbiting Saturn. It is fairly large for a moon, and is comparable in size to some of the inner terrestrial planets. it's atmosphere is composed mostly of N2 gas. What really interests the scientists, and our astronauts is Titan's mantle. It is widely accepted that Titan has a mantle not of molten rock, but of liquid water - one of the most vital elements needed for life.

Astronauts
The Astronauts for this mission were:

Stephen Smith, Habitat Commander

Johnathan Scothorn pilot

Steven Mair pilot

Stefan Deyoung electrician

Brian Foo Payload Specialist

Nevin Hotson Able Crewman

Mission Results
We have life!

The experiments for the mission have been concluded, and alhough a formal report is still being generated, the Payload Specialist has been able to draw many conclusions about the prospects of life on Titan. We have been able to confirm the presence of nitrates, ammoniates, carbohydrates (sugars) and lipids (fats) on the surface of Titan. The presence of these complex organic molecules points towards the existance of life. Further evidence was obtained when sealed samples of liquid from Titan fermented and produced copious ammounts of alcohol. This behavior was observed in several samples, and rules out any possibility of this being an isolated case of contamination.

Training Missions, or Gamma Misisons are small, return-on-same-day missions. These missions are meant to train OCESS members, both new and old, how to conduct a space Mission, as well as offer new members a chance to experience a space misison first hand.

Every year, Spacesim conducts two missions: a mini, or Training Mission usualy lasting about 4 to 6 hours, and a 96 hour "main mission" to an astral body in the solar system. Candidates for mission destinations have been planets, moons, and even asteroids as the OCESS astronauts search for their own educational experience in the depths of "space" by conducting experiments, simulated extra-terrestrial/space walks, piloting space vehicles and dealing with various simulated scenarios and problems that may play out over the course of a real space mission such as meteor strikes, ion storms and engine failures.

During the mission, the astronauts remain inside the Habitat, their only contact with the outside world being through a telephone, radios, webcams, and computers much like a real space mission. It is inside the Hab that they must eat, drink, sleep, play and carry out all life functions. These astronauts usualy miss several days of school to wear flight suits and helmets while the rest of the school wishes they were missing school with them

See Space Sim Groups for more information
Mission History
The first mission in Ottawa took place in 1992. From then until the 2002-2003, missions were 72-hours in duration. In fact, the 2001-2002 mission was originally scheduled to be the first 96-hour mission, but was delayed 24 hours by the Board.

Historically, missions ran from a Thursday to a Sunday, although recent times has seen them move to occupy more of the school week. The mission date was set for February by the International Student Space Simulation so that all missions would occur simultaneously. This practice continued until arround 1996, at which point, mission date coordination only took place between Ottawa and our sister-mission in Lexington, South Carolina. the South Carolina exchanges ended in the late 90's, but the 2001-2002 mission did involve an exchange with a school from Florida.
They usualy opperate behind closed doors to maintain Mission Integrity and prevent Astronauts or Mission Control staff from viewing the alien environment. The planetary surface crew usualy works in close co-ordination with the Simulators so as to co-ordinate the landscape and environment with their planned disasters. Since the planetary surface crew members have already seen the alien environment before the mission, they usualy serve as simmulators to maintain mission integrety by preventing and knowlage of the destination planet away from Mission Control.

Methods
The planetary surface crew often use paper mache to create landscape and natural objects such as rocks and puddles. Sand is almost always used to cover the floor of the Planetary surface, while colored sheets are hung above the surface to simulate the sky of a planet.

However, the planetary surface crew have used some very creative methods of simulating an alien environment within the confines on 440 Albert Street. Such methods include using popcorn to simulate snow, and using large fans and subwoofers to simulate wind and earthquakes.

Foo1: /* Providing Oxygen */

Pseudoscience

WorkInProgress

Simulation

Purpose
The life support systems are designed to maintain a habitable and comfortable environment for the Astronauts inside the Habitat. To fulfill this task, the life support system must do several things:

* Provide oxygen
* Remove carbon dioxide
* Maintain a comfortable temperature
* Protect the inhabitants from radiation
* Provide gravity

Since the missions undertaken by the OCESS cover much more distance than those of other space agencies, the environmental systems must be able to keep working for long stretchs of time without need of maintenence or resupply. Also, to minimize weight, these systems must be small and consume the least amount of supplies possible.

Providing Oxygen
The life support system obtains its supply of oxygen from the fusion reactor fuel. The fusion reactor aboard the AYSE Drive uses hydrogen as fuel. This hydrogen is stored in the form of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is kept under pressure. Unlike water, hydrogen peroxide decomposes naturaly into hydrogen and oxygen without the need for energy-consuming electrolysis. The resulting hydrogen is then fed into the fusion reactor whereas the oxygen is fed into the life support system.

Using this system eliminates the need for the refrigeration, which is needed to store liquid oxygen and hydrogen separately. We also eliminate the need to expend great amounts of energy in breaking up water to provide hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.

Removing Carbon Dioxide
A life support system that provides oxygen is no good unless it can remove the carbon dioxide produces by the human body. Since carbon dioxide scrubbers have too short a lifespan to last the duration of a mission, a new way of removing carbon dioxide was needed. Carbon dioxide is removed by way of a cryogenic scrubber. The air is circulated through pipes chilled by a refrigerant at -78ºC. This causes the carbon dioxide to liquefy while leaving the other gases in a gaseous state. This liquid carbon dioxide is then gathered up and evacuated.

The carbon dioxide gas is disposed of in one of two ways. It can be transformed into methane using the extreme heat of the fusion reactor coolant and some extra hydrogen fuel. This methane is then used to power the puffer jets that maneuver the Habitat. Alternatively, the gas can be ionized and fed into the plasma drives to provide extra thrust, like an afterburner.

Temperature Control
To maintain a constant temperature in space, the habitat is coated with a special white paint. This gives the Habitat an exceptionally high albedo and reflects about 80% of all heat radiation. To affect the temperature of the habitat in a more active way, reactor coolant can be pumped through tubes embedded in the habitat walls to provide heat; and refrigerant from the cryogenic carbon dioxide scrubber is used to cool down the habitat further.

Radiation Protection
Hull construction
The Hull plating of the habitat can be polarized, thereby repelling most types of radiation. Since polarizing the plating requires a lot of energy, the plating will only be polarized during severe ion storms. Normaly, the habitat walls are sufficiently insulated to stop most radiation.

Artificial Gravity
Artificial Gravity
To provide gravity while on its own, the habitat puts itself in a barrel roll, and the resulting centrifugal force provides enough gravity for the astronauts to function. While traveling with the AYSE Drive, the constant acceleration provides gravity through the inertia of the astronauts and the habitat.

He has grown to enjoy spacesim very much, and is commited to improving the club. He has participated in every EEP and Planetarium he possibly can, as well as the organization of several OCESS projects such as the Galileo Challenge and the Summer Camp. He is also a major contributer to the Forum, as well as the main contributor to the [www.wiki.spacesim.org wiki project]: contributing numerous articles in the Habitat Systems project.

Alex has acted as a Simulator for the 2005-06 mission to Titan. His future as a simulator is considered a state secret.

Outside of OCESS, Alex builds plastic models, chats on the computer, watches sci-fi and generaly participates in a mixed variety of nerd activities.
