Mr. Jeffcott. Thank you for your recent editing, it is impressive! The Wiki Team is pleased. I just wanted to ask that you shift your efforts slightly. Watching your edits (Matt Dunbar, Matt Dunbar, pizza run, pizza run, Matt Dunbar, Matt Dunbar), I thought I'd express what we really need to tell more people: that the absolute most important pages on the wiki are about procedures, the rooms in the habitat, facts about missions and education, procedures, history, etc. The Wiki is our own lore collection, but it's also a big part of our public outreach. It's not uncommon that people who know nothing about Spacesim, or who haven't known anything about Spacesim for 20 years, will visit the wiki to see who we are.
Obviously we like all kinds of editing, and the lore stuff is an important aspect of Spacesim and is a lot of what future members will want to know. I also want to make it very clear that I'm not telling you off or necessarily even correcting you, I just wanted to make sure that as a member of the Wiki Task Force you had been informed of our mission and our priorities. - Darth Wombat 23:24, 12 March 2010 (EST)

Red Tape, otherwise known as bureaucracy, is something frequently encountered by all those who deal with large organizations such as the OCDSB. Spacesim's encounters with Red Tape have included the many visits of the Fire Marshals and the shuffling of the club back and forth between the Media Centre and 440 Albert Street.

Red Tape in 2007-08
During the 2007-08 scholastic year, Spacesim was notified that they would be moved to another room of Ottawa Tech to make room for a growing masons' school. Spacesim was later told that they would not have to move, but even later they were told that they would have to again. Coincidentally, or related to a worldwide Illuminati conspiracy, some type of inspector announced that the Habitat was unsafe.

Red Tape in 2010-11
At the end of the previous year (2009-10), Spacesim was subjected to an inspection from Occupational Health and Safety, resulting in the temporary closing of the 440 facilities. This closing continued into the start of the 2010-11 year, resulting in a severe lack of worksessions at the start of the year. Instead, EEPs and Orbit training sessions were held at Lisgar.

Holding back information
Mission Control may have legitimate reasons for holding back information. For instance, if it is impossible for the Habitat to fix an issue before moving on to the next most important task, Mission Control may hold back potential solutions, while ordering the astronauts to the next task. It is Mission Control's duty to make sure that the astroanuts accomplish their goals, and it is the Mission Control Commander's or any Flight Director's perogative to decide which information the Habitat needs in order to best fulfill their duties. Of course, as a perennial astronaut, I am for full disclosure. However, the Mission Control Commander's authority is absolute. He is in charge of the mission. Period. -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:Absolutely. I was more aiming to convey that I have seen, both in a training mission and in a main mission, Simulators not give information to Mission Control on the grounds that the astronauts had not yet directly asked for a solution to the disaster at hand. - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)

Punishment
Perhaps not punishment, but simulator reaction to astronaut action is the duty of the simulator. For instance, during Daedalus 2010, Jeffcott and I were watching the Simulator Mezzanine. There had been a short on the secondary power bus, and the astronauts were flicking the lights on and off. Jeffcott and I, as simulators, determined that this flickering would exacerbate the short, and proceeded to cause ln1 to malfunction and disabled the C&C lights. This sort of reaction and quick thinking is absolutely the job of the simulator, and is not so much punishment of the astronauts as it is an attempt to simulate how the real world might interact with the astronauts. -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:If it is a reaction that follows logically from the astronauts' behaviour, that is absolutely appropriate. If it is in the mindset that the astronauts deserve to have unrelated bad things happen to them because they have behaved in an "inapproriate" fashion, I see no constructive purpose. - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)

Goals
In my opinion, your proposals miss the main issue with training missions as they currently stand. The number one problem with training missions as they are executed today is that there are no clear-cut goals for the astronauts to pursue and for Mission Control to direct them towards. I feel that if a training mission had one or two well defined goals and several clear-cut end conditions, training missions would proceed with much more expediency and interest. "This is what we have to do. Now let's figure out how to do it." -- Stefanido 21:56, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
:I agree that we need that. That, however, is not all that we need. Would you like to add it as an amendment? - Darth Wombat 22:15, 29 March 2010 (EDT)
::::That's quite a misconception, as CAPCOM really does have to think. They have to take what the Flight Director says, read what the Flight Director actually means, paraphrase that into something appropriate for the radio, and transmit it. They need to take word-perfect dictation coming from the HAB, as one word could mean the difference between life and death for the astronauts. Finally, CAPCOM has to be aware of the mood on both ends of the communications, and endeavour to keep the lines of communication well oiled and always open. CAPCOM is not an easy job. It doesn't have a position in the hierarchy, though. Technically, the only MC position with any real rank to it is the Flight Director. The term Mission-Specific refers to ranks within the administrative hierarchy of Spacesim that only take effect during the main mission. It is worth noting that mission-specific ranks are different from mission roles; the former describes positions of power within the mission, frequently held by members who have no actual power at other times, while the latter can describe any position during the mission. A good example of the former would be Flight Director, while a good example of the latter would be Simulator.

Another term for Mission-Specific is Mission Mobilization. This is primarily used in old documents.

Mission-Specific Ranks
These are primarily found within Mission Control, with a few notable exceptions:
*Mission Control Commander
*Flight Director
*Simulator Commander
*Mission Specialist

By £glin
Wake up in the morning feeling like Neil Armstrong

Grab my space suit, I'm out the door, I'm gonna head where I belong

Before I leave, grab a phone with a chip they can track

'Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back

I'm talking heavy boots on our toes, toes

Vacuum-proof all our clothes, clothes

MC yellin' on the phones, phones

Shuttling, playing our favorite CDs

Controlling the hab with ease.

Trying to explore like we were Wall-E

Don't stop, make it pop

Simmies, blow my hotlab up

Tonight, I'm on flight

'Til we see the sunlight

Quick talk, don't you balk

But the pressure don't stop, no

Don't stop, make it pop

Tonight, I'm on flight

'Til we see the sunlight

Quick talk, don't you balk

But the pressure don't stop, no

Ain't got a care in world, but got plenty of cheer

Ain't got no fuel in my pod cells, but I'm already here

And now, the Ruskies linin' up cause they hear we got swagger

But we kick em out the airlock 'cause we hear they brought daggers

I'm talking about everybody on the bunk, bunk

Bottom shelves filled with junk, junk

Hotlab pressure was normal he thunk, thunk

Now, now, we go until the air is out, out

Or the simmies shut us down, down

Simmies shut us down, down

Simmies shut us

Don't stop, make it pop

MC, you build me up

You break me down

My heart, it pounds

Yeah, you got me

With pressure up

You got me now

You spin me round

Yeah, you got me

MC, you build me up
United forever in friendship and labour,

Our mighty endeavour will ever endure.

The great Spacesim legend will live through the ages.

The dream of a people, their EEPs days secure.

Long live our Spacesim Hab expand,

Made by the people's mighty hand.

Long live our members, united in glee.

Strong in our friendship tried by ire.

Long may our mission launch inspire,

Shining in glory for all things to see.

Through days dark and stormy where the cohort had brought us

Our eyes saw the bright sun of doctrine above

And Magwood our teacher, with faith in the members,

Inspired us to build up the room that we love.
Shining in glory for all things to see.

We built for the future, fixed up the new wiki,

And brought to our Spacesim the gift of the game.

Our glory will live in the good education
Of all generations, regardless of fame.
Parody of The Battle Hymn of the Old Republic
By Eglin
[Based on The Space Sim Song]

We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the astronauts.

We fly, we fly, we fly, we fly, we fly around a lot.

We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.

Glory, glory and it's off to space we go.

Glory, glory as we shout out "Spaceward Ho!"

We are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.

The astronauts all flew out quite ignorant of their fate.

First they had a water leak, which the simmies used as bait.

Oh, they stemmed the flow though did not know the duct tape was all gone

The mission carries on.

Glory, glory and it's off to space we go.

Glory, glory as we shout out "Spaceward Ho!"

We are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.

Bravely they all flew out but then one of them got sick

MC said it was harmless, but to them it seemed a trick.

Quarantined and through a screen he'd see them all anon.

The mission carries on.

Glory, glory and it's off to space we go.

Glory, glory as we shout out "Spaceward Ho!"

We are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.

He persevered, when orbit neared, they dropped him back on Earth

They met up with some Ruskies, then with AYSE in her berth.

The simmies had one trick left, they had a faithful pawn.

The mission carries on.

Glory, glory and it's off to space we go.

Glory, glory as we shout out "Spaceward Ho!"

We are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.

They flew out to the asteroid belt to make an FTL.

Pulled a Star Trek on the physics, but the simmies still were hell

Meteor shower met AYSE power but it could not defend

The mission sadly ends.

Glory, glory and it's off to space we go.

Glory, glory as we shout out "Spaceward Ho!"

We are, we are, we are, we are the very best.

We're the O.C.E.S.S.
The term "Simulator Loft" describes an area in the current room W027. For the area in the old room E016, see Simulator Area.

The Simulator Loft is where the Simulators keep their computers and tools, and where they congregate to cause disasters. It is the mezzanine area of the current 440 Albert Street facilities.

Contents
The Simulator Loft houses the following objects:
*The patch panel and network hub that services the network at 440 Albert, along with a number of network cables
*A large bookcase housing not only books about science but ancient Spacesim records
*A pile of mats and one bunk formerly from the Hawking II for simulators to sleep on during the Mission, when they are allowed to.
*A printer for FU and associated manuals and drivers
*The computers FU, A.C. Clarke, Nebula, Temeraire, and Cassini, found on the List of Computers
*A series of light switches that control the power to the individual rooms of the habitat. It is important to note that the computers, the fridge and the microwave run on a seperate circuit (an emergency backup generator in the Beta reality), and although the light switches can cut power to lights and outlets in the habitat they cannot affect these crucial systems. One switch each controls the lights and plugs in the Interlock, the Longhouse, and Command and Control, and a fourth switch controls the Hotlab, Engineering Closet, Airlock, and the outlets in the Bathroom. There is no way to turn off the lights in the washroom. A fifth switch turns all the other switches on.
*A television that can switch between any feed from any camera inside the habitat
*4 chairs
*Stereo equipment that runs the sound system within the habitat
*3 unused computer monitors
The SubSim software is the Quick Basic program that controls the subermisble craft Laura. It was introduced to the club in 2009-10 for Mission Daedalus by Dr. James Magwood, who adapted it from a submarine warfare program that he had written while a PhD student. Consequentially, this software still includes unidentified objects, which in the original program were enemy Russian submarines. The software is perhaps most notable for its optional 3D graphical display of the ocean floor; creating a 3D graphical display in Quick Basic was the act that finally convinced most members that Dr. Magwood is, in fact, God.

Functions
The SubSim Software's engine functions are much the same as in the Orbit software. Laura has a left engine and a right engine, each of which can be run at up to 100% capacity and in the opposite direction at 100% capacity (signified in the program with -100%), as well as a centre engine which is also reversible. It has bow and stern planes which can be adjusted to allow the water to flow either under or over the submarine and push it up or down, respectively, and these can be raised or lowered in increments of degrees up to 90 and down to -90. Similarly, its rudder has the same funcionality; this is one example of the smooth fashion in which the program deals with transportation in three dimensions. The software accounts for ballast, which can be ejected from either side or drawn into either side to function as an air bladder. The program also allows Laura, through the use of a fathmometer, to chart what she meets in her travels through alien oceans and to determine the distance, using sonar, between herself and any other objects in the water. The sonar also allows Laura to track consistent sources of sound: possible signs of alien habitation, and the sonar accounts for thermal layers. The program allows Laura to take up to six samples of water, and it also tracks collisions such that if she collides with objects she will spring dangerous leaks. Images on the display allow the user to track information in three dimensions, with animations showing an image of the submarine's pitch and a compass showing its yaw. Given its 360 degree functionality, the submarine's roll is unimportant.

Use to Date
The software was used once on Mission Daedalus, but only briefly; the mission's late launch date coupled with the desire for more EVAs led the software to be brushed aside. Since then members have attempted to use it on one training mission, but that mission was cut short and the submarine could not be deployed. The software is used so infrequently because of the limited number of places in the solar system where it is useful; recent examples of locations where astronauts can go on EVAs and can deploy a submarine are Earth, Europa, and Enceldus. There have been discussions about deploying the submarine in oceans of methane, but the pseudoscience would have to be worked out and the astronauts would have to have some reason to go on EVA.

Planetariums, along with EEPs, make up the educational arm of Spacesim. The goal of Planetariums, like EEPs, is to educate students about space and spread interest in space sciences and space exploration. They also generate revenue for the club so that it may continue to offer such programs.

Program
Unlike EEPs, Planetariums only offer one topic and are mainly geared towards astronomy. Where EEPs attempt to educate students in general science, planetariums generate interest in astronomy and outer space.

This program involves students of Spacesim taking an inflatable planetarium to various schools in the region and set up on their premises. There, we take the students inside the inflatable dome and show them around the night sky, showing them the constellations, their history and the story behind each of them, as well as explaining such phenomena as red/blue shift, and why some stars appear brighter than others in the night sky, among other things.

Leadership
This program is lead by the Planetarium Commander. The current Planetarium Commander is Bryce Storey. You can contact him here to schedule a Planetarium session.

After the 2010-11 administration changes, the program will be lead by the Education Commander and the Deputy Education Commander.

The fuel that is in the fuel tanks is typically liquid hydrogen, if you are filling your tank from Earth or Ayse, which is then fused toghether by the reactor to make helium and energy. if you are filling your tanks from another planet such as Jupiter, you will get Hydrogen, Helium and other gases. This means that though it can still be used by the reactor, it will output less energy per Kg, which in turn means less efficiency.

Fuel is monitored from the Engineering station in all three locations (The Habitat, Mission Control, and the Simulator Area).

The planetary surface crew is a Task Force that is assigned to decorate the planetary surface to simulate the environment being visited by the astronauts. They usually operate behind closed doors to maintain mission integrity and prevent Astronauts or Mission Control staff from viewing the alien environment. The planetary surface crew usually works in close co-ordination with the Simulators so as to co-ordinate the landscape and environment with their planned disasters. Since the planetary surface crew members have already seen the alien environment before the mission, they usually serve as simulators to maintain mission integrity by preventing Mission Control from accidentally discovering what the landscape looks like.

Methods
The planetary surface crew often use papier-mâché to create landscape and natural objects such as rocks and puddles. Sand is almost always used to cover the floor of the planetary surface, while colored sheets are hung above the surface to simulate the sky of a planet.

However, the planetary surface crew have used some very creative methods of simulating an alien environment within the confines of 440 Albert Street. Such methods include using popcorn to simulate snow, and using large fans and subwoofers to simulate wind and earthquakes.

Procedure
Station Training
Station Training refers to the basic training that members must receive on specific mission tasks in order to be qualified to perform their duties during a mission.

Stations
There are nine stations that a member can train in. These are:

*Common
** AUXCOM
** CAPCOM
** EECOM
** ENG
** LOGS
** NETWORK
*Specific
** COMMAND
** MEDICAL
** PILOT

Common Stations
Each of the stations listed under "common" also refers to a station in the common positions chapter of the Procedures Manual. These stations have minor differences in the requirements for each of Astronauts, Mission Control, and Simulators, and so certification in a common station will be considered certification in that station under each of the three groups.

Specific Stations
Each of the stations listed under the "specific" heading have different requirements for each of the three groups, and members must certify for that station under each group separately.

In Mission Control:
*COMMAND is required by:
**FLIGHT
*MEDICAL is required by:
**SURGEON
*PILOT is required by:
**FIDO and GNC

In the Habitat:
*COMMAND is required by:
**Habitat Commander and Subcommander
*MEDICAL is required by:
**MEDIC
*PILOT is required by:
**PILOT and Co-Pilot

Ratings
Each member will have a rating on each station, which indicates their relative level of training and competence on that station. The ratings are:
width="100px" align=center style="background: #990011;"|Not Complete ||width=500px| This member has not accomplished any significant strides in mastering this station.
align=center style="background: #CC6622;"|In Progress || This member understands the basics of this station. They are working towards a rating of Complete on this station.
align=center style="background: #00EE33;"|Complete || This member has mastered this station. They are qualified to man it during a Main Mission.

Documentation
Each member will have their own training summary card, housed on the wiki. It will display their certifications on their member page.

Members are required to display this documentation to the Mission Control Commander when applying for astronaut or mission control duties.
<br clear=all>

Certification Requirements
In order to be certified to a particular rating, members must be able to demonstrate all of the abilities itemized in the appropriate list of certification requirements. These requirements stack, so that members trying for their Complete Rating, must also be able to demonstrate the In Progress Rating skills.

Members are certified to In Progress Rating or Complete Rating by their instructor. The instructor is then responsible for having their student's documentation updated on the wiki. Instructors are required to document all students they have certified.

Members are certified to the Instructor Rating by the Mission Commander, if the Mission Commander has rating of Complete or higher on that station. Otherwise, the Admiral may certify members to the Instructor Rating.

Changes to Certification Requirements
Changes to the certification requirements are made as a petition to the Mission Commander.

If the Mission Commander changes the certification requirements, the previous requirements should be preserved, and an amendment appended to the appropriate section. The Mission Commander must then re-certify all Instructors for that station within two weeks of the changes. The Instructors must re-certify all of their students who are still current members within two weeks of being re-certified themselves.

If a member is not re-certified, their rating will be downgraded to In Progress, with a note made of their previous rating.

Instructors
Assignment
Members are generally responsible for locating their own instructor for each station. However, they can also ask the Mission Commander to petition instructors on their behalf.

Number
There is no maximum number of instructors for any particular station.

The Mission Commander is responsible for ensuring that there is at least one instructor for each station each year. If, at the end of the year, graduation or other factors would cause there to be fewer than one instructor for each station, the Mission Commander must return in the following year to certify sufficient instructors. If the Mission Commander is unable to fulfill this obligation, the Admiral must promote a member to Instructor Rating.

EVA suits are items of clothing worn by astronauts in hazardous environments, most notably the hard vacuum of outer space. There are many different varieties of EVA suits, and Spacesim possesses two different types of suit: full-body suits (similar to the Advanced Crew Escape Suit) and skin-tight space activity suits.

Full-body suits
Spacesim originally conducted missions with only three of these suits, leaving those astronauts without suits to cower in safe modules during emergencies. These suits have several layers of fabric, which insulate and protect the astronaut, and Velcro cuffs that help keep air in. Each suit is associated with a plastic bubble helmet. These suits, in particular one made with several layers of plastic, are known to get very hot very fast when an astronaut is wearing it. As a result, the plastic suit have been affectionally named the "hot suit" during mission Red Dawn; recent efforts to reform the EVA suit system are also a response to this problem.

Space Activity Suits
In response to criticisms that the older suits were too restrictive, hot, and generally showing their age, Commander De Young pushed for, and got to develop a new generation replacement, termed Space Activity Suits. These suits consist of a central 'corset' and elasticized fabric for the limbs, simulated by tights or long underwear. These apply mechanical pressure to the skin to prevent bruising in a vacuum. They are designed to be worn under a flight suit. These were intended as full replacements of the EVA suits, however, during their first mission in use, the corsets partially detarorated due to hasty construction leading up to the mission, and the less than gentle environment on board the Habitat. The tights segment of the activity suits were never enforced beyond the first EVA, due to the discomfert and "un-manly-ness" associated with wearing a tight/underwear.
Also, due to the easy and unencombered nature of the "corset", astronauts, like pilot Scothorn and co-pilot Xing, were able to wear the activity suit full time while having helmets and gloves placed on top of the computer at which they were working, thus mentally eliminating the danger of beta death.
Due to these complaints, the role of the space activity suits were redefined for mission Red Dawn; now they function as Emergency Pressure Suits. These suits offer less protection against other hazards, as compared to the "old" EVA suits, which have been pressed back into service. Their uses are restricted to inside the Habitat, during liftoff/landing, imminent astroid impact, and IVAs (except in emergency circumstances, such as the sand/lightning storm during mission Red Dawn.)

Helmet Upgrade
During the construction of the Space Activity Suits, a new series of helmets were made to be used in conjunction. These helmets were better-equipped than the older ones, larger, and included a fan to prevent fogging. This fan is much appreciated by the astronauts, for fogging often rendered the older helmets unusable after as few as ten minutes.
After the Space Activity Suits have been downgraded, the helmets remainded in their role as replacements for the "fish bowels".
