What is the purpose of the Community Portal? How should we use it to maximal effect? Is the current table of links acceptable? [[User:Stefanido|Stefanido]] 15:04, 8 March 2010 (EST)
==Expansion==
We need to use a common tag for short articles, or articles needing expansion. Do we use Expansion Needed or Stubs? On the main page we have both, but we should probably only use one. I vote for '''Stubs'''. [[User:Stefanido|Stefanido]] 09:19, 10 March 2010 (EST)
'''Discussion moved to talk page from project page''' [[User:Stefanido|Stefanido]] 12:36, 11 March 2010 (EST)

Our current priority (IMHO) should be updating the wiki's various out-of-date articles. I have thus created a [[Template:0910|template]] and category recognizing up-to-date pages. The plan is to have all articles lit up with that nauseatingly bright green banner by the time the mission starts, or someone other than the wiki team bothers to use the wiki. Whichever comes first. [[User:Max.Jeffcott|Max.Jeffcott]] 17:58, 18 November 2009 (EST)
:I decided that this was not working and have therefore deleted the template. It was a good idea, but the template got applied to articles that didn't deserve it, and the project was too large to be feasible. Also, it was a bit ugly and blunt.---[[user:rubberchickenben|<font color="green">Benzyne]][[User_talk:Rubberchickenben|Talk Page</font>]] 13:29, 14 January 2010 (EST)
::Perhaps rather than templating the ones that we have edited we should template the ones that we have not. That way we are working towards firstly defining what needs editing and secondly getting rid of the banner, rather than cluttering up every article of the wiki permanently. - [[User:Darth Wombat|Darth Wombat]] 18:06, 30 January 2010 (EST)
[[Image:Corset.JPG|left|thumb|200px|[[Stefan De Young]] demonstrates the space activity suit's "corset" in [[2006-07]].]]'''EVA suits''' are items of clothing worn by [[astronauts]] in hazardous environments, most notably the hard vacuum of outer space. There are many different varieties of EVA suits, and [[Spacesim]] possesses two different types of suit: full-body suits (similar to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Advanced_Crew_Escape_Suit Advanced Crew Escape Suit]) and skin-tight [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_activity_suit space activity suits].

==Full-body suits==
[[Spacesim]] originally conducted [[missions]] with only three of these suits, leaving those [[astronauts]] without suits to cower in safe modules during emergencies. These suits have several layers of fabric, which insulate and protect the [[astronaut]], and Velcro cuffs that help keep air in. Each suit is associated with a plastic bubble helmet. These suits, in particular one made with several layers of plastic, are know to get very hot very fast when an astronuate is wearing it. As a result, the plastic suit have been affectionally named the "hot suit" during mission Red Dawn; recent efforts to reform the EVA suit system is also a response to this problem.

==Space Activity Suits==
In response to criticisms that the older suits were too restrictive, hot, and generally showing their age, Commander De Young pushed for, and got to develop a new generation replacement, termed Space Activity Suits. These suits consist of a central 'corset' and elasticized fabric for the limbs, simulated by tights or long underwear. These apply mechanical pressure to the skin to prevent bruising in a vacuum. They are designed to be worn under a [[flight suit]]. These were intended as full replacements of the EVA suits, however, during their first mission in use, the corsets partially detarorated due to hasty construction leading up to the mission, and the less than gentle environment on board the Habitat. The tights segment of the activity suits were never enforced beyond the first EVA, due to the discomfert and "un-manly-ness" associated with wearing a tight/underwear.
Also, due to the easy and unencombered nature of the "corset", astronuates, like pilot Scothorn and co-pilot Xing, were able to wear the activity suit full time while having helmets and gloves placed on top of the computer at which they were working at at the time, thus mentally eliminating the danger of beta death.
Due to these complaints, the role of the space activity suits were redefined for the following mission, Red Dawn. Now they function as Emergency Pressure Suits. These suits offer less protection against other hazards, as compared to the "old" EVA suits, which have been pressed back into service. Their uses is restricted to inside the [[Habitat]], during liftoff/landing, iminent astroid impact, and IVAs; except in emergency circumstances, such as the sand/lightning storm during mission Red Dawn.

==Helmet Upgrade==
During the construction of the Space Activity Suits, a new series of [[helmet]] were made to accompany these. These helmets are better-equipped than the old ones, larger, and include a fan to prevent fogging; this fan is much appreciated by the [[astronauts]], for fogging often rendered the old helmets unusable after as few as ten minutes.
After the Space Activity Suit have been downgraded, the helmet remainded in their role as a replacement for the "fish bowels".

Please work on these articles preferentially. Our future members, the [[Wiki Task Force]], and anyone who wants to learn about Spacesim certainly appreciate any editing you do; our Lore is the well-loved product of smart people selected by common interest. But the most important facts about Spacesim, about previous missions and years, about how we learn and teach about space, can all be found on the pages for years, for procedures and for various rooms within the [[Hawking III]], our [[habitat]]. This wiki is for public outreach and for preserving the most important parts of [[Sim Culture]], so let's make it as complete and as rife with facts as we can.
===Planets Project===
Create an article for each destination that we've visited that contains basic information about that planet, when we visited it, and what we learned there. If possible, [[EEP]]s information should be tied in as well.
We have massive quantities of paper records, which will likely be lost in the coming years if they are not properly archived. I suggest that we:
*Read through (or at least skim) our paper records, and use these to expand our coverage of Spacesim's earlier history
*Scan the records in their entirety and upload them as PDF files for viewing.
I'm willing to help with the first part, and the second if we can find someone with a scanner that exports PDFs. [[User:Max.Jeffcott|Max.Jeffcott]] 22:48, 10 March 2010 (EST)
:Alright, looks like the project is beginning. I currently have position of the "Mission '91/Mission '92" binder, and I'll begin scanning it soon. I'm also using it to make significant changes to articles concerning those years, since it turns out the ISSS was significantly more expansive than we've been letting on. Wish me luck. The '''Beginner's Guide to the Wiki''' will be a comprehensive resource to assist new members. It will be completed by the end of [[2009-10]].

==Creating a page==
To create a page, you need to click on a [[Red Link]]. You might find red links around the wiki, or if you want to create one yourself, you can search for a pagename that doesn't exist in the search bar on the left hand side of the screen. If the page truly does not exist, you'll see a message
<pre>There is no page titled "red link". You can create this page. </pre>
Where "this page" will be the red link to the page you want to create.

==Editing a page==
If you go to a page that doesn't exist by following a red link, you'll be prompted to edit it immediately, but if you're editing an already existent page, you'll need to click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page. Some pages are protected and can only be edited by System Operators (SysOps) such as the members of the [[Wiki Task Force]] . The [[Main Page]] is an example of a protected page.

==Questions and Comments==
If you're not sure whether or not to edit something, or you want to comment on the way information is being presented without changing it yourself, make a note of it in the Discussion or Talk page of the article you're considering. To do this, click the "discussion tab" at the top of any page.

===Discussion Best Practices===
If you're opening a new category of discussion, create a new header by using two equals signs around some header text, as in "<nowiki>==Header 1==</nowiki>."

If you're responding to someone else's comment, prefix your comment with a colon ("<nowiki>:</nowiki>"). This will cause it to be indented by one indentation. This means that if your comment is the third one in a conversation (the second reply), you need two colons, as in "<nowiki>::Reply lorem ipsum, etc."</nowiki>

'''Always''' sign your comments with a series of four tildes <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>. This will cause your username, and the time of your edit to be appended to your comment. For example, were I to sign this with four tildes, you would see "[[User:Stefanido|Stefanido]] 10:40, 11 March 2010 (EST)"

==Text and Links==
===Text===
To add text to a page, just enter it as you normally would into a word processor. However, you should put a blank line between paragraphs.

===Bulleted Lists===
To make a bulleted list use asterisks (*), as in
{|align=center
|-
|Width=200px|<pre>loremipsum dolorsitamet
*Item 1
*Item 2
*Item 3
|-
|}

===Links===
To make a link to another page on the wiki, enclose the text in double square brackets eg.<nowiki>[[link]]</nowiki>. This will link to the page name enclosed, so if you wrote <nowiki>[[Main Page]]</nowiki>, you would link to the [[Main Page]]. However, if you want to link to a page without using its name in the link text, you need to write the page name then a vertical bar and the the text to be displayed as in <nowiki>eg. [[Page to Link|you will see this]]</nowiki>. For example, if we wanted to link to an article about [[EVA Suits]] with the text "Space Activity Suit," we would write <nowiki>[[EVA Suits|space activity suit]]</nowiki>, and you would see [[EVA Suits|space activity suit]].

In order to link to a page outside of the wiki, for example one on Wikipedia, you would use single brackets, as in <nowiki>[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCESS]</nowiki>. If you want it to show up as something else, simply add a space after the URL and then type out whatever you want to text to appear as, as in <nowiki>[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OCESS The OCESS Wikipedia Page]</nowiki>. The '''Pope''' was a [[duct tape]] finger puppet created by Nevin Hotson and Ben Paul during the [[2007-08]] [[Mission]]. He had the likeness of a pope, and a smiling face. "The Pope" was written on him and he became remembered as a source of lewd jokes. His face was redrawn three times after the Sharpy marker markings wore off. This problem was solved when Ben Paul covered him in hockey tape contributed by [[Bryce]]'s dad.
The Pope is [[currently]] thought to be hiding in the [[Sim Office]], though he has not been seen since the end of the [[2007-08]] scholastic year. Because spacesim was being moved to another room shortly after that time the original Pope may be lost forever.

==Radar==

To detect large objects such as space debris and asteroids, the [[habitat]] uses a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous-wave_radar continuous wave radar](CWR) system similar to that used on advanced air-to-air missiles. Each continuous wave radar system of the habitat consists of two radar dishes. One dish sends out a continuous radar signal and the other dish is devoted to receiving the signal emitted by its counterpart. This enables the radar system to calculate the velocity of the target by measuring the frequency shift due to the Doppler effect.

A continuous radar wave emmited at a certain frequency is incapable of calculating distance. To make up for this deficiency, the amplitude of the radar waves is moved up and down. When a reflection is received, the amplitudes are measured, and the Astronauts can find out when in the past that particular amplitude was sent out. With this knowledge a range calculation can be performed to determine the distance between the radar and the object.

==LIDAR==

There are several disadvantages to the CWR system on the habitat. It is easily disrupted by radiation and pulsars, and it cannot detect gas clouds. To compensate for these deficiencies, a light based system is also mounted to complement the CWR. LIDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, uses a reflected light beam to detect objects. This is achieved by emitting the light beam at a known frequency (usually in the infrared or ultraviolet ranges). The light beam is reflected by various objects and picked up by a receiver. In addition to being able to detect gases, the LIDAR can determine gas' composition, by detecting the different ways gases react in to ultraviolet and infrared light. These changes can be picked up by the LIDAR and can help determin the chemical makeup of the gas cloud.

Also, since LIDAR can detect clouds and gases, it can be used to gather meteorological data about planets.

The main disadvantage of LIDAR is that it used a fairly concentrated beam; and thus the sweep area of a LIDAR detector is extremely small compared to that of the radar. By combining the two, we can use the radar to scan broad areas for navigational hazard, whereas the LIDAR is used only for specific areas of interest and to study gaseous phenomena such as planetary rings and gas clouds

==Astronomical Navigation==

The [[habitat]] is capable of computing its position within the solar system based on the theoretical speed and direction that the habitat has traveled since it left earth. This, combined with the radar and LIDAR, is accurate enough to ensure that the habitat does not run into any planets or moons. However, the habitat does not travel in an ideal world, and risks such as solar wind and calculation errors are real.

To allow the detection of any errors, the Habitat navigational software also compares the observed positions of astronomical bodies (such as planets) with their predicted positions. Because the positions of planets can be predicted with a very high degree of accuracy, even a small discrepancy will be detected. Once the discrepancy is known, the Habitat's true position can be determined, and the 'dead reckoning' sensors take over again.

Lisgar started in 1843 as a grammar school with an enrollment of about 40. The names and location of the school changed frequently during the first several years, eventually settling in 1873 in its current location under the name Ottawa Collegiate Institute. Construction began in 1874, with the total cost of the land and building at $59,000 including $100 paid to a squatter to use the land.

The school prospered and grew throughout both world wars, during which a rifle range was built into the top floor. The school was re-named Lisgar Collegiate Institute in 1920 when the school split from Glebe High School.

Today, Lisgar houses a student body of about 1460 students; 90% of which will head off to university next fall. Lisgar has a strong reputation as an academic school, with numerous educational programs such as French Immersion, Advanced Placement, Enrichment, etc. and has generally done well in numerous boardwide math and science contests.
