Ian's Bunk is the bunk in the Hawking III that Ian Martin first used on the 2008-09 mission (thus the first one to use said bunk) and used again on the 2010-11 mission. Its name is debated, mostly by Ian himself. It was originally named Xompar, after an alien character that he created sometime in Grade 9. He phased out the character gradually, so it made less and less sense to keep calling the bunk that. Eventually he created Andy the Communist Goblin, and decided to rename the bunk Andy. While not an alien, Andy was a communist, and that was a popular topic of political discussion among Spacesim's members at the time.

Ian Martin joined Spacesim in 2007, expecting a reasonably entertaining club. Fortunately and unfortunately, it turned out to be so much more than that. As far as he knows, his callsign is "Pika", named so for his infamous "pikapuns". This has been subject to debate.

Participation in Club
He was quartermaster for a period of time in 2007-08. During his reign he organized the shelves and told people where everything was. Other things he did during his first year were become sort of familiar with software (mostly the simulator software), do logs on the Main Mission, and otherwise generally goldbrick about.

He was an astronaut on the 2008-09 mission to Iapetus. His role was Able Crewman. Over the first few days (i.e. before the hab launched), he stayed and help set up the network, buy food, repair things, and otherwise prepare. On the mission he operated the various stations in the Control Room. He went on an EVA or two and repaired the lights really late at night. He rather enjoyed himself.

In 2009-10 he did a number of things as well. He was the head of the Curtains task force, helped make the Engineering Closet Hatch, worked very briefly on the Rave Cave, dabbled in the network, helped on too many occasions to organize Kelpernicus, and became more acquainted with software, among other things. On the mission he was a member of Mission Control, and served a number of shifts as a replacement Flight Director.

He was the Mission Commander, and thus one of the co-heads of Spacesim with Samuel Baltz, in 2010-11. This meant he was also Habitat Commander on Dragan 2011. He was responsible for leading and decision-making aboard the habitat during the mission. He worked with Olivia Frank, the Habitat Subcommander, to organize the astronauts and the habitat for the mission (shifts, food, and other administrative tasks). Along with Samuel Baltz, he decided the mission location of Gliese 581. Throughout the year he made minor contributions to various taskforces, and leading up to the mission, helped with mission-specific tasks such as camera wiring.

As of 2011-12 Ian has graduated high school and has become, as per Spacesim tradition, a Vice-Admiral. He still lives in Ottawa, so he drops by Spacesim occasionally to visit or help. He was one of the flight directors on Red Sun 2012.

UTSDC
Ian participated on Team 1 of Spacesim's 2010 UTSDC teams, which competed in the Senior Category. He also participated on Spacesim's 2011 UTSDC team, which again competed in the Senior Category.
The 2011 Mission to Gliese 581f, Mission Drake-Sagan or Mission Dragan, was the first mission to exit the solar system, and the third mission in the Hawking III.

Mission Purpose
The Astronauts were to venture to Europa to follow up on Vice-Admiral Rouble's discovery of a strange unexplained signal and to gather as much data from the signal and to find out it's meaning, and if possible, to explain it's presence.

Continuity
It should be noted for continuity purposes that:

*The AYSE drive was almost completely destroyed on collision with Jupiter and is currently in orbit around Callisto awaiting repair
*Laura was lost after going through the anomaly and was never recovered.
*The Habitat did not successfully land and is now currently moving away from earth. Limited fuel supplies remain. The astronauts are awaiting a rescue team.

Astronauts
* Ian Martin (Habitat Commander)
* Olivia Frank (Habitat Sub-Commander, Medic)
* Samuel Baltz (Chief Engineer, LAURA Pilot)
* Matthew Dunbar (Pilot)
* Arrian LeClaire (Co-pilot)
* Patrick Melanson (Able Crewman)

Highlights
*The mission started one day late (an improvement over last year).
*A news article published in the Ottawa Citizen regarding the mission.
*Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk came to witness the mission briefly.

On the mission he operated various stations, including eecom, logs, capcom, and engineering. He went on an EVA or two and repaired the lights really late at night. He rather enjoyed himself. The rest of the year is mostly forgotten by him because he has a poor memory. He thinks he learned how to pilot but has evidentially forgotten how to by now.

In 2009-10 he did a number of things as well. He was the head of the Curtains task force, helped make the Engineering Closet Hatch, worked very briefly on the Rave Cave, dabbled slightly in the network, helped on too many occasions to organize Kelpernicus, and became more acquainted with software, among other things.

UTSDC
Ian participated on Team 1 of Spacesim's 2010 UTSDC teams, which competed in the Senior Category. He also participated on Spacesim's 2011 UTSDC team, which again competed in the Senior Category.

While not an alien, Andy was a communist, and that was a popular topic of discussion among its members.

Ian Martin joined Spacesim in 2007, expecting a reasonably entertaining club. Fortunately and unfortunately, it turned out to be so much more than that. As far as he knows, his callsign is "Pika", named so for his infamous pikapuns. This has been subject to debate.

Participation in Club
He was quartermaster for a period of time in 2007-08. During his reign he organized the shelves and told people where everything was. Other things he did during his first year were become sort of familiar with software (mostly the simmie software), do logs on the Main Mission, and otherwise generally goldbrick about.

He was an astronaut on the 2008-09 mission to Iapetus. His role was Able Crewman. Over the first few mission-less days, he stayed and help set up the network, buy food, repair things, and otherwise prepare.

Along with Samuel Baltz, he decided the mission location of Gleise 581. Throughout the year he made minor contributions to various taskforces, and leading up to the mission, helped with mission-specific tasks such as camera wiring.

UTSDC
Ian participated on Team 1 of Spacesim's 2010 UTSDC teams, which competed in the Senior Category. He also participated on Spacesim's 2011 UTSDC team, which again competed in the Senior Category.

On the mission he was a member of Mission Control, and served a number of shifts as a replacement Flight Director.

He was the Mission Commander, and thus one of the co-heads of Spacesim with Samuel Baltz, in [2010-11]].

He was the head of the Curtains task force, helped make the Engineering Closet Hatch, worked very briefly on the Rave Cave, dabbled slightly in the network, helped on too many occasions to organize Kelpernicus, became more acquainted with software, and a few other things that escape him at the moment. On the mission he was a member of Mission Control, and served a number of shifts as a replacement Flight Director.

He was the Mission Commander, and thus one of the co-heads of Spacesim with Samuel Baltz, in [2010-11]]. Along with Samuel Baltz, he decided the mission location of Gleise 581. Throughout the year he made minor contributions to various taskforces, and leading up to the mission, helped with mission-specific tasks such as camera wiring.
The bunk beds of the Hawking II were largely the work of Kevan Adlard, who built them out of materials recycled from the Wooden Habitat. Unfortunately, the bunk beds were structurally unsound, and broke on their first overnight test during the 2006-07 mission. The bottom fell out of the top bunk closest to the Interconnect with Stefan De Young falling through, largely unharmed, but substantially scratched. The following day, Cmdr. De Young and Nevin Hotson attempted to fix the bunk beds, but the bottom bunk on which they stood could not support both of their weights standing, and broke. While it is often claimed that either Cmdr. De Young or Mr. Hotson "jumped" on the bottom bunk, these allegations are unsubstantiated.

After the second bunk broke, Cmdr. De Young commissioned the creation of a repair-bot, who was constructed out of a pool noodle, air ducts, duct tape, an extension cord, and a circuit board. The longhouse cameras were deactivated, so as not to be damaged by the robot, and the robot was tasked with repairing the broken bunks, and verifying the integrity of the remaining four. Simulator Commander Kevan Adlard used the cover story of the repair bot to mask his entry into the Habitat, as he performed the robot's duties.
While not an alien, Andy was a communist, and that was a popular topic of discussion among its members.

Xompar is a fictional alien creature that was created by Ian Martin sometime during the fall of 2007. He is a secret agent who works for the New Hirschfeld Espionage Agency. He is part of the species Lyzat, which are smooth-skinned, cold-blooded reptiles that resemble anthropomorphic cats. He is mostly white in colour with several red markings.
One of the bunks in the current Habitat, the Hawking III, was named after Xompar. This was changed by Ian during Dragan 2011 to Andy, as Ian Martin decided to retire the former character in favour of promoting the latter.

Mmm... Well That's Disappointing is a meme that saw incredible use on Mission Dragan. It was invented by Ian Martin and Samuel Baltz at a school play rehearsal the Saturday before the mission. It must be said in a specific voice.

Origin
To be explained when someone can remember.

The Voice
The voice which must be used to say the sentence was pioneered by Ian Martin. It soon turned into a meme of its own; people would use the voice to say something insulting to the intelligence of someone else (often by implying that they studied the humanities, and then implying the stupidity of studying that), and/or as a way to exaggerate someone's very minor mistake, such as a typo or dropping an object. Most of these statements inexplicably end with "thanks," "thank you," or (more inexplicably) "over"; it is often jokingly remarked upon afterwards how oddly polite "he" (the voice) is. It bears a striking resemblance to that of the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.

Use in Mission Dragan
Used extensively over CAPCOM in lapses of professionalism and in conversation during that mission's extended crunch time, this voice appeared with exponentially increasing frequency as the mission wore on and the Astronauts's patience wore thin.

Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego? is an educational game made by Broderbrund Software in 1993, in which the player must chase Carmen Sandiego and her alien henchmen throughout the planets and moons of the Milky Way. It runs on DOS. An empty box that presumably once held the deluxe version of the game now sits in the Sim Office.
History
This game was one of the station activities for small children during EEPs and Summer Camp for at least some of the time during which these programs existed. Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego? was also a station for mini-missions during the 90s. On Sept. 22, 2008, Ian Martin donated a copy to Spacesim. It is NOT an exception to the Sim Office rule of "No video games without Commander permission".
Mission Dragan
On the first day of Dragan 2011, Arrian Amir-Rafiei discovered a file called "AWESOEM" on one of the Habitat computers. This was how some member of spacesim (presumably Ian Martin) had hidden it for further use, despite Commander objections. Arrian put the file onto his netbook, and, during the first night shift, Ian played it for a long period of time. The next night shift, while Arrian was in bed, Ian, not wanting to wake him to ask permission to use his netbook, relocated the file and put it onto the EECOM computer, Pulsar. He played it during the next few night shifts. Once the rest of the crew discovered it, they all (except Samuel Baltz) wanted in on the fun. So, during any downtime, one astro or another could probably be found playing it, while still intermittently checking EECOM. Soon, of course, it started drifting into actual mission time, which caused it to be unofficially put on a Blame List for the Dragan mission.
